A father and son combination, the senior hurlers have their first competitive fixture this Friday evening while the under-14 hurlers qualify for the North Tipperary Féile final. All this and more in this week’s bumper edition of the news on the Blues.

Our junior footballers travelled down to Cloneen to play St. Patrick’s in the opening match of the county league and despite an impressive performance were unlucky to lose 3-7 to 0-7. It is a testament to the players that they were willing to drive over one hour to play the game in awful weather conditions and indeed both sides have to be complimented for the high skill levels on show despite the inclement weather.
A special note about today’s game is that we got to witness something very rare in Gaelic games and indeed something rarer still in Nenagh Éire Óg in that we saw a father and son play together. Conal Ryan came on as a second half substitute and lined up in the forwards alongside his father Lenny. Well done lads.

Hard luck to our minor footballers who were beaten by Kiladangan today in Puckaun 0-9 to 0-1 in the North championship. With heavy rain and a blizzard blowing in the second half, both sets of players deserve huge credit for the manner in which they went about their business. We have two games left in the round robin stages against Kilruane MacDonagh’s and Inane Rovers with the Kilruane game taking place on Sunday at 12 noon in Nenagh.

In the junior-A league we play Toomevara, Roscrea and Burgess. Our opening match is on the weekend of 23 March in MacDonagh Park.

Under-14
Well done to our under-14 Féile hurlers who beat Borris-Ileigh on Saturday in Borrisoleigh. It finished 4-07 to 2-04. Played in very poor and windy conditions, both teams left everything on the field in a very entertaining contest to watch. The lads will now face the winners of Toomevara and Roscrea in the North final.

All the girls with their certificates
Saturday morning marked the end of “The EBS Nenagh Éire Ógres” with a visit from our county star Grace O’Brien who graciously took the time to present the girls with their certificates and t-shirts. Grace won another Ashbourne Cup medal with the University of Limerick in the past few weeks and is a great role model for our young Ógres. We wish her the very best with Tipperary this year. Throughout the four weeks the focus was on fostering an enjoyment of the skills learned, encouraging parental involvement and developing enthusiasm for the sport. We held our registration morning this morning and lots of the girls joined up to continue playing with our under-6 and under-8 teams this year. Training begins this coming week and details will be shared on the parents WhatsApp group. Any new players who wish to give it a try can contact the club through our social media platforms. Our thanks to the many coaches, parents and older sisters who gave up their precious time to ensure the girls had a wonderful time. Huge thanks must also go to the hard working committee who worked tirelessly behind the scenes ordering t-shirts, registering the girls, providing lovely food and all the other jobs that they did.

There are three Nenagh Éire Óg players involved in an exciting weekend of colleges hurling this weekend
Bob O’Brien will be in action for IT Tralee
Last weekend both Grace O’Brien and Ruth Hassett captured medals for their colleges in an exciting weekend of third level camogie action. Grace won her third Ashbourne Cup medal for UL while Ruth won the Purcell Cup with NUI Maynooth.
This weekend it is the turn of the men as three of our players seek to win with their respective colleges.
On Friday, Peter Folan and Bob O’Brien will be hoping that IT Tralee can overcome the challenge posed by Ulster University in the Electric Ireland Higher Education Ryan Cup semi final. This game takes place in WIT Sports Campus at 3pm. Should they beat Ulster University, they will line out less than 24 hours later in the final against the winners of G.M.I.T and Athlone IT with throw-in at 12:30pm, again in WIT Sports Campus.
Philip Hickey will line out for Mary Immaculate College on Saturday at 14:45pm in WIT Sports Campus as they look to defeat UCC in the Electric Ireland Higher Education Fitzgibbon Cup final. UCC are the kingpins of third-level hurling with 38 titles to their name while Mary Immaculate only have two, the last of which was won in 2017.
The club sends our best wishes to Peter, Bob and Philip and hope the lads will be celebrating their success on Saturday evening.

Up-Coming Fixtures
The competitive season is due to start shortly and our senior hurlers will renew rivalry with Clonoulty Rossmore in a repeat of last year’s county senior hurling final in the opening round of the county league.
This game is expected to take place on Sunday, March 10th at 12pm in Clonoulty while we expect to play our next game in the league the following Sunday at 12pm in MacDonagh Park against Loughmore Castliney.
Our junior-B footballers expect to play their opening match of the county league in Drangan on Sunday, March 3rd against St. Patrick’s at 12pm. The lads will play Clerihan in MacDonagh Park in their second match and travel to Kilcommon to play Seán Treacy’s in the final group game of the league later in the year. They will play their opening match of the county junior-B championship against Lorrha & Dorrha in St. Ruadhan’s Park on the weekend of April 21st and will play Galtee Rovers and Éire Óg Annacarty next in the championship with both games fixed for MacDonagh Park.
The minor footballers play Ballina on Sunday morning at 11am in MacDonagh Park in the North minor-A championship.

Best wishes go to Philip Hickey and Mary Immaculate College, Limerick who play University College Cork in this year’s Electric Ireland Fitzgibbon Cup final next Saturday in Waterford. Mary Immaculate overcame the challenge of Shane Hennessy’s NUI Galway 1-18 to 0-18 in the semi-final in Cusack Park, Ennis on Thurles. Commiserations to Shane who had a fine season in goals for the Connacht college and good luck to Philip in the final.

Hard luck to Barry Heffernan, Jake Morris and the Tipperary seniors who were defeated by Wexford thanks to a last minute point by Aidan Nolan, 1-15 to 1-14 today in Innovate Wexford Park. The lads must regroup now for the next Sunday when Kilkenny travel to Semple Stadium. Meanwhile there was better news for Grace O’Brien as the Tipperary senior camogs overcame Wexford today in Enniscorthy, 5-11 to 0-8 in the league. Grace managed a first-half point in the game.

Award One Youth Course
The Award One Youth Course is being run by North Tipperary coaching development officer Paudie Malone. Paudie Butler was taking the session last week in Kilruane MacDonagh’s GAA club. Our thanks to our four coaches Mike Corrigan, Tom Coughlan, Tom Boland and Cathal Farrell who are giving up their own time to develop their own coaching knowledge over the five nights of the course. It’s a great course and will greatly benefit the underage players in the club.
Civic Reception
Like father, like son. David and Seán Minogue collect their certificates at the civic reception last week
Last week the club was honoured by a civic reception in the council offices on the Limerick Road. Firstly former player and coach Seán Minogue was honoured for his exploits on the pitch and putt courses after he won the British Open and the Dutch open. Secondly our under-11 hurlers were also honoured after winning the All-Ireland Community Games final last summer in Limerick while world champion handballer, Sinead Meagher of Nenagh Handball Club, was recognised for her outstanding achievements in 2018. Also recognised was juvenile coach Brian O’Brien who also won a world handball championship.
The sporting talent in our town is amazing and it is fantastic to see it officially recognised.

Éire Ógre Girls
The third morning of the Éire Ógres got underway at the club last Saturday with almost fifty girls participating in a variety of activities. The children are improving their motor and physical skills with the main focus being on having fun. Help from older siblings and parents has helped hugely in creating a lovely atmosphere in the hall each week and the treats afterwards have ensured that there are lots of happy faces at the end of the session. Registration will take place during the Ógres next week for any child who wishes to continue playing for the year.

Senior County Hurling League Draw
Tipperary Senior Hurling League Champions 2018
The draws took place during the week for the county senior hurling league and Nenagh Éire Óg find ourselves in Division One, Group One. This newly restructured league offers clubs seven competitive matches during the summer months when the senior inter-county teams are in action. This means that clubs will have to play these fixtures without their county players until Tipperary’s interest is finished in the senior championships.
The top two teams in both groups will qualify for the semi-finals while the bottom team is automatically relegated.
Division 1
Group 1: Nenagh Éire Óg, Loughmore Castleiney, Toomevara, Clonoulty Rossmore, Éire Óg Annacarty, Killenaule, Roscrea and Portroe.
Group 2: Upperchurch Drombane, Burgess, Borris-Ileigh, Moycarkey Borris, Thurles Sarsfields, Kilruane MacDonagh’s, Kiladangan and Drom & Inch.
County Junior B Football League and Championship
After the huge interest in playing Gaelic football last summer the club have entered a team into the county junior-B league and championship.
The draw was made for this during the week and in the county championship we have been drawn to play Lorrha & Dorrha, Éire Óg Annacarty and Galtee Rovers.
In the county league we find ourselves in Division Three, Group Two alongside St. Patrick’s, Clerihan and Seán Treacy’s.

The GAA has issued a new Code of Behaviour for all members of the Association and once someone pays their membership they automatically sign up to this new code. Nenagh EBS sponsored Éire Ógres (girls under-6 & under-8s ) were back for lots more fun and games on Saturday for day two of their four week introductory camp. All the children practice basic fundamental skills and movements. Our thanks to the huge parental support which ensures there is lots of encouragement. Thanks to the hard working committee for providing beautiful treats in the committee room also. Next week there will be a registration morning in the complex during the Ógres for any child who wishes to join up as a member of the camogie club for the year, allowing them to continue training after the camp finishes up.

This week sees the Fitzgibbon Cup semi-finals take place and for once, two Nenagh Éire Óg players will be hoping the other loses as Philip Hickey’s Mary Immaculate College, Limerick take on Shane Hennessy’s NUI Galway. This game is expected to take place in Cusack Park, Ennis on Thursday at 2:20pm.
Philip already got one over on a team mate as his side defeated Cork IT in the quarter final. Andrew Coffey scored two points for the Cork men but it wasn’t enough to help his side progress.

Hazel (UCC) and Grace (UL) after last year’s Ashbourne Cup final
The prestigious Ashbourne Cup will leave a lot of Nenagh Éire Óg supporters confused as to who to shout for as Grace O’Brien (UL) and Hazel McAuliffe (UCC) will be on opposite sides as University of Limerick play University College Cork in the final at 4pm. These two sides have met in the last three Ashbourne Cup finals while in the 2017 final Grace created her own piece of history by becoming the first Nenagh Éire Óg player to win this competition. She won her second last year.
We had another connection to the Ashbourne Cup competition this weekend as Mike Ryan was the man in the middle in the semi-final between Waterford Institute of Technology and University College Cork.
All games take place in Mallow tomorrow.

The draws have taken place for the 2019 Tipperary Water senior hurling championships and we have been paired in a group along with Burgess, Loughmore Castliney and Upperchurch Drombane. This group is going to be a baptism of fire for the club’s new management team. In 2018 we just about got over the line against Loughmore Castleiney in the county quarter-final and the Mid men will be out for revenge. Our last clash with Upperchurch Drombane was in 2013 and once again we were pushed right to the final whistle while neighbours Burgess are the reigning Seamus Ó’Riain cup champions and will be more than anxious to prove that their rightful home is in the Dan Breen Cup.

Commiserations to Barry Heffernan, Jake Morris and the Tipperary senior hurlers who were defeated by Limerick in round two of the Allianz National Hurling League on Saturday night in the Gaelic Grounds 1-21 to 1-14. Barry scored a delightful first-half point which can be seen in the Tweet below. We wish Barry well as he had to retire early from the game after picking up an injury. Next up for Tipperary is a trip to the sunny South East as they play Wexford in Innovate Wexford Park on Sunday February 16th.

2019 Membership is Now Due
Club membership for 2019 is now due and you can pay online here. There are different prices for students, OAPs, unemployed as well as two different family rates. Membership can also be paid to any committee member. For further information you can ring Derek Lillis on 086 861 4863.
Gaeltacht Scholarships
The following will be the procedure for obtaining a Gaeltacht Scholarship from Coiste Chontae Thiobraid Árann in 2019.
- The scholarships are confined to 2nd Year, TY and 5th Year Students in 2019 and previous recipients of Tipperary GAA Gaeltacht scholarships cannot apply in 2019.
- Students should immediately book a course directly from one of the three nominated Munster Irish Colleges on the application Form. This should be done ASAP as popular dates are booked out quickly.
- Students wishing to secure a scholarship from Tipperary GAA should complete the attached application form and submit it through their own local GAA Club.
- The secretary of the GAA Club must sign the form and attach a reference letter supporting the applicant’s application before returning it to the Co. Rúnaí. Please note the club recommending the successful applicant will be contributing €75 to the scholarship along with the Division, Co Board and Munster Council.
- Interviews for the scholarships will be held in Lár na Páirce during February to establish each candidate’s suitability.
- Once the student is notified that they have been successful they must secure a receipt for their fee payment from the Irish College where they have registered.
- Once this receipt is received by the Co. Rúnaí the scholarship cheque for €300 will be posted out directly to the student’s home.
The closing date for the receipt of Gaeltacht Scholarship applications is Friday, February 8th, 2019.

Under-10
Under-10 camogie training continues in Nenagh College at 9am every Saturday morning. Newcomers are always welcome. All girls must wear helmets and shinguards.
Under-12
Under-12 training continues every Wednesday evening 6:00 – 7:00 in the ball alley at Nenagh Éire Óg complex. Newcomers are always welcome.
Under-14 & Under-16
Under-14 and Under-16 training continues on Wednesdays from 6.00pm to 7.00pm at Nenagh Éire Óg. Everyone is welcome and our under-16 championship starts in a few weeks.
Nenagh Éire Ógre Camp
47 girls took part in the Nenagh EBS Éire Ógre Camp on Saturday morning. It is always one of the most exciting times in the club calendar. We welcomed lots of new faces who joined up with the girls from last year. Our thanks to EBS Nenagh for their kind sponsorship. If there are any other girls who would like to come along, the camp runs for another three weeks. Girls born in 2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014 are welcome. Everyone receives a t-shirt and certificate at the end of the camp. No hurley or helmet are needed for the camp.

Well done to our Nenagh EBS sponsored Éire Ógres who completed day one of the GAA camp for beginners yesterday. There was a huge turn-out again and thanks must go to the mentors and parents who helped out. The biggest ‘thank you’ though must surely go to our newest stars! They were enthusiastic, positive, well behaved and full of fun. Nothing beats seeing the joy on a four year old’s face because he landed that ball in that bucket! We must get a photograph of that. Looking forward to seeing you all again next week!

Nenagh Éire Óg’s GAA camp for beginners, kindly sponsored by EBS Nenagh, returns for 2019 each Saturday, from February 2nd to 23rd at the MacDonagh Park Complex from 9.45am-10.45am for boys and 10.45am-11.45am for girls. It is open to all boys born in 2013-2014 and girls born in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. The cost is €10 for the month and the boys and girls will be presented with a certificate and a special Éire Ógres training t-shirt on completion of the course.

Jake sets up Seamus Callanan for his opening goal
Congratulations to Jake Morris, Barry Heffernan and the Tipperary senior hurling team who recorded a comprehensive win over Clare in the opening round of the league on Saturday in Semple Stadium. Jake finished the game with two points to his name while he also played a major role in the build up to Seamus Callanan’s two goals. Best of luck next Saturday evening to everyone involved as they take on Limerick in the Gaelic Grounds.
On Saturday Grace O’Brien came on as a half-time substitute for Tipperary in their league clash against Galway in the Ragg but unfortunately she couldn’t prevent her side from going down to a defeat. Hard luck Grace.

Under-10 camogie training continues this Saturday at 9am. We are always looking for new talent so all are welcome including newcomers. All girls must wear shin guards and helmets. Please be there for 8:50am to make the most of the hour. €2 per child.

Under-12 training continues every Wednesday evening from 6pm to 7pm in the ball alley
WEEKLY WALK
Our weekly walk continues this Thursday from MacDonagh Park at 7pm with registration from 6:45pm. This walk is open to everyone regardless of fitness and is a fantastic social way to get in shape.

Operation Transformation
Operation Transformation continues this Thursday night, for the next five weeks, from MacDonagh Park with a sign in time of 18:45pm and the walk itself commencing at 19:00pm. All are welcome regardless of fitness levels and absolutely no one will be left behind.

Best of luck to Barry Heffernan, Jake Morris and the Tipperary senior hurlers in their opening match of the Allianz Leagues next Saturday when Clare make the trip to Semple Stadium. Throw in is at 7pm.
Hard luck to Grace O’Brien and the Tipperary senior camogie team who were defeated by Cork in the opening round of the league today. Grace appeared as a second-half substitute. They play Galway next weekend.
We also congratulate all our players who received their medals for winning the Munster minor and All-Ireland under-21 championship in 2018. Rory O’Donovan, Seán Phelan and Cian O’Farrell were part of the minor set up while Jake Morris and Shane Hennessy were members of the All-Ireland under-21 squad.
