Operation Transformation

Well done to everybody who took part in the Operation Transformation 5K Walk on Saturday in association with Tipperary Sports Partnership. Over 250 people enjoyed the exercise and the refreshments afterwards in the complex. As part of the Ireland Lights Up campaign and Operation Transformation, Nenagh Eire Óg will lead a 5K walking programme beginning this Thursday, January 17th and continuing each Thursday for six weeks. Free to all, registration is at 7.15pm in the complex with the walk starting at 7.30pm. See you all there!

GAA Games Development Conference

The club were represented at the annual GAA Games Development Conference on Saturday last by Niall Cahill, Cyril Bailey, Seán McTiernan, David Minogue and Enda O’Sullivan and with the emphasis on player wellbeing, the five came away with plenty of food for thought. On what was a fantastic event for anyone with an interest in coaching and player development the five were treated to numerous insightful and educational talks with the highlights being Waterford’s Derek McGrath and former world champion boxer Bernard Dunne who both gave insights into their thought process and philosophies on management. 

The GAA will be uploading videos from the conference onto their website over the next few days and we recommend that you make it your business to watch both Derek and Bernard’s presentations.

We extend our commiserations to St. Mary’s Nenagh who were beaten by St. Flannan’s Ennis, in the Munster senior B final on Saturday last in Clarecastle on a 1-6 to 1-4 scoreline. The club were represented by Niamh Sheridan, Megan Grace, Caroline Browne, Rachel O’Connor, Lucy Spain and Ciara Sherlock. The team however are not finished yet as they now progress to the All-Ireland series and we wish them the very best in that competition. 

Tipperary camogie and indeed our very own club have an awful lot to be thankful for when it comes to St. Mary’s as the school, and in particular Mr. Dulea, have gone above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to promoting camogie. Many players from the school have gone on to represent Tipperary and during the glory years for Tipperary in the late ’90s and early 2000s the team were backboned by former St. Mary’s players. We have no doubt that many of the players on the current team will play a huge role with the clubs and county into the years ahead.

Commiserations go to Nenagh CBS who were agonisingly defeated by a last-ditch goal by CBC Cork, 2-14 to 2-12, in the Dr. Harty Cup quarter-final during the week. Victory seemed assured after Bryan McLoughlin scored what appeared to be a match-winning goal three minutes into injury time but the Cork lads from the resultant puck out worked the ball up the field to score a goal of their own within thirty seconds. Nenagh were represented by Rory O’Donovan, Seán Phelan, Liam Heffernan, Fiachra Starr, Conor Hennessy, Gavin Dooley, Paul McLoughlin, Brendan Long and Conor Robinson while former Nenagh players Donach O’Donnell and Dean Ray were part of the management team. 

Once again we wish to thank all the schools in our parish for their continued work in promoting Gaelic games. Teachers and coaches are very generous with their time and knowledge and this is appreciated by everyone in Nenagh Éire Óg.

The club held a lovely and relaxed 5km and 7.5km walk on New Years Day. Our thanks goes to Bartley Ryan and TP Sullivan for organising the event. We are gearing ourselves up for the Operation Transformation walk, in association with RTÉ and Tipperary Sports Partnership, on Saturday 12th January at 10am in MacDonagh Park. This is the ideal way to begin 2019 on a positive and healthy note and with a huge crowd expected it is the ideal way to get some exercise in a social environment.

Jake fires over a first-half point

Congratulations to Jake Morris, Barry Heffernan and the Tipperary senior hurling team who defeated Kerry in MacDonagh Park on Saturday last, 4-20 to 1-14 in the Co-Op Superstores Munster league in front of 1186 patrons. Jake pointed three fantastic points while Barry was superb in the half-back line. Tipperary now face Clare in the final which is due to take place next weekend.

Bloody Sunday

On Saturday evening last, Tipp FM’s Stephen Gleeson paid a visit to Jimmy Morris to interview him for an upcoming documentary to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. The Tipperary GAA Bloody Sunday Committee are in the process of planning a number of events to mark the centenary of one of the darkest days in GAA history and Jimmy spoke about an old friend of his from Nenagh, Pat Cleary, who was present on that dreadful day. 

The Buff is Back

The popular Kerry hurling fan, Buff Egan, was back in MacDonagh Park on Saturday to see his beloved Kingdom play the Premier and true to form, he was the first patron through the gates. Arguably the most dedicated hurling fan in the country Buff once again happily posed for selfies and even entertained the crowd at half time with his exhibition of free taking while been ably assisted in his Snapchat commentary by Mary Ryan, wife of former Nenagh hurler, Denis.

New Year’s Resolution

In Nenagh Éire Óg we are very fortunate to have an army of volunteers who help out in many different ways throughout the year. Whether it’s parking cars on match day, selling lotto tickets or putting out flags before games everyone has a role to play. There is always something that people can do to help the club in an enjoyable and social environment. St. Stephen’s Day Walk

A large crowd of walkers gathered for the club’s 5km and 7.5km social walks on St. Stephen’s Day. We wish to thank the organisers and there are walks from the club every Tuesday evening at 7pm, open to all.

New Year’s Day Walk

After the success of the St. Stephen’s Day walk, the club are organising another social walk for New Year’s Day. Again, there are two distances, 5km and 7.5km. Registration is at 10:15am in the complex with the walk commencing at 10:30am. Everyone is welcome regardless of fitness and no one will be left behind.

Don’t forget that you have a brilliant opportunity to see Liam Sheedy’s new Tipperary outfit in action in MacDonagh Park on Saturday next, December 5th at 2pm in MacDonagh Park as the Kingdom make the trip north for the second round of the Co-Op Superstores Munster Hurling League. In their previous match Tipperary overcame the challenge of All-Ireland champions Limerick, 4-14 to 2-17, with both Jake Morris and Barry Heffernan featuring.

It was fantastic to see a massive crowd from the club in the Dapp Inn on Friday evening to support Shane Hennessy and Killian Gleeson as the two lads raise funds for the GVI charity which they are volunteering to work for next June in Cape Town.

With over twenty teams participating in the table quiz it was Table 17 who came out on top at the end. We send our congratulations to Enda Costello, Gerry Robinson, Ray Deering, Kevin Costello and their mobile phones on a stunning victory. In second place was the magnanimous Table 15 consisting of Matt Lillis, Marion Ryan, Bartley Ryan and Enda O’Sullivan. It must be pointed out that the second placed team did not, at any stage, resort to Google or their neighbouring teams for answers and in a dignified manner, only lost by one solitary point. 

A special thank you goes to the hosts the Dapp Inn and quizmaster for the night, Kevin Whelan.

Senior Hurling Management for 2019 Revealed

On Thursday evening last, the club announced at a committee meeting that 2018 senior hurlers, John Brennan and Noel Maloney, will join Darragh Droog as the club’s senior hurling management team for the upcoming year. 

Both John and Noel have soldiered together in the backs for the seniors for many years now while Darragh played a major role in getting the team to the county final this year. Darragh has a wealth of experience in preparing teams having been involved in the Na Piarsaigh Munster and All-Ireland winning sides as well as doing strength and conditioning work with Limerick’s underage hurlers and a number of soccer teams within the county. Noel and John have taken charge of a number of the club’s underage sides in the past while Noel also managed Burgess Duharra.

We wish all three men and the entire panel the very best of luck in 2019.

St. Stephen’s Day Walk

For those of you who will most likely overindulge on Christmas Day the club are organising a St. Stephen’s Day walk from the club at 10:30am. It will be a fantastic way to work off the turkey and stuffing and everyone is welcome.

There are two walks, a 5km and 7.5km route with registration at 10:15am in the complex. The walks themselves commence at 10:30am. 

Shane Hennessy’s Table Quiz

This June, senior hurlers Shane Hennessy and Killian Gleeson are kindly volunteering in Cape Town, South Africa for two weeks with the GVI charity. To help raise funds for this worthwhile cause, Shane has organised a table quiz in the Dapp Inn on Friday, 28th December at 9pm. It would be fantastic to see a large turnout from the club to support these young men who are generously giving up their time to help others less fortunate.

On Saturday, December 22nd, the Tipperary senior hurlers completed a spinathon and held numerous under-12 coaching sessions in a number of venues around the county in order to raise vital funds for the Amanda Stapleton Benefit Fund and Running for Josie campaign. 

The spinaton took place at our juvenile sponsor’s premises, A Sportsman’s Dream while the coaching session was held in Nenagh College. The Nenagh Éire Óg under-12s were coached from 12 noon until 1pm and it was a fantastic opportunity for our young hurlers to learn from the very best in the country. We were blessed with the weather and we’re delighted that players Barry Hogan, Alan Burns, Jake Morris, Barry Heffernan, Cian Darcy, Niall O’Meara and bainisteoir Liam Sheedy all gave up their free time to pass on their knowledge of the ancient craft.

This is the ideal way to begin the new year while diligently sticking to the new year’s resolution.  We will have further information closer to the date.

For those enthusiastic walkers who can’t wait until the new year the club organises a walk every Tuesday evening at 7pm outside the complex and everyone is more than welcome to participate. 

Condolences

The club sends its condolences to John McNamara and family following the sudden death of John’s father, John Eamon, in Achill Island, Mayo. John has been a tremendous supporter and mentor with the club and his children all play camogie, hurling and Gaelic football for Éire Óg.

The funeral details are as follows: reposing at St. Colman’s, Keel on Sunday from 4pm until 7pm. Remains arriving to St. Patrick’s Church, Pollagh on Monday morning for Funeral Mass at 11am. Burial will take place in Slievemore Cemetery. Family flowers only please.

Congratulations goes to Sinéad Meagher who has captured a throughly deserved Annerville award for her outstanding achievements in handball throughout 2018. These prestigious awards go to the outstanding amateur sport stars throughout Tipperary and will be presented by the Tipperary United Sports Panel in the Clonmel Park Hotel on January 26th.

Annual General Meeting 2018

The club’s Annual General Meeting took place on Thursday evening last in the complex and a healthy, robust discussion was had on various aspects of the club by those in the large attendance.

Congratulations to Barry Heffernan and Jake Morris who both featured for Tipperary as they overcame All-Ireland champions Limerick in the Gaelic Grounds on Friday evening in the Co-Op Superstores Munster Hurling League 4-14 to 2-17. They are now due to play Kerry in MacDonagh Park, Nenagh on Saturday, January 5th at 2pm.

Congratulations to our Cardiac First Responders who received their certificates during the week. Having an army of members who are trained to deal with serious situations is very important for the club and we wish to thank those who participated and of course Angela Spain of the Irish Red Cross for organising the course.

The participants were Phil Hennessy, Kevin Tucker, Shane Connolly, Jim Kennedy, Catherine Kennedy, Bartley Ryan, Noreen Ryan, Jim Nagle, Mary Jo O’Reilly and Liam Quinn. 

Support Local Enterprise

One of the most important subjects being taught in second level schools throughout the country is Enterprise as fourth year business students get the opportunity to establish and run their own business and learn from real-life situations rather then from theory in a textbook. This student led course takes responsibility away from the teachers and places it firmly on the shoulders of the pupils as they make all the decisions regarding the direction their company takes.

Students from Nenagh College have decided to make these stunning Nenagh Éire Óg themed medal holders which would make an ideal present on Christmas morning. The lads have confirmed that Santa Claus has been in touch and has placed a number of orders for some very special boys and girls in the club. The club extends its congratulations to Kilruane MacDonagh’s Seamus Hennessy who completed the Antarctic Ice Marathon on Thursday in 7:05:33 hours. Seamus has been busy raising money for Pieta House and Living Links and we are thrilled that he has smashed his €200,000 target as the GAA community, not just throughout Tipperary, but the country and beyond has responded so generously to this remarkable young man. Seamus participated in the Blues 10KM run last June with proceeds going to his Running for Josie campaign. Annual General Meeting 

The club’s AGM will take place on Thursday, December 13th at 8pm in the club house. We look forward to seeing all club members there on the night as look back at 2018 and look forward to 2019.

They have also planned a St. Stephen’s Day walk at 10.30am from the complex to work off the turkey and stuffing. Again everyone is welcome to come along. 

Tipperary Sports Partnership and Nenagh Éire Óg, in association with the TV programme Operation Transformation, are holding a 5k Family Fun Walk on Saturday January 12th at 11am. This has been hugely successful in the past and promises to be a great way to begin the new year and start those resolutions. 

Juvenile Presentation

The juvenile club will host its medal presentation on Saturday, December 7th, at 7pm in the complex with refreshments served afterwards.

The brilliant Tipperary Studies website has recently uploaded North Tipperary senior hurling and Gaelic football match programmes and reports from the Nenagh Guardian. Previously, they posted all the Tipperary GAA Yearbooks and county final match programmes onto their website and now they have done likewise with the North division’s showpieces. Their Twitter account (https://twitter.com/TippStudies) and Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/tipperarystudies/) are well worth following for anyone with an interest in Tipperary sporting and cultural history.

The Late John Kissane

All in the club were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of John Kissane this week.

John Kissane

Originally from Doon East, Ballybunion, the Kerry native moved to Nenagh in the 1980s and found a home in Nenagh Éire Óg where he would have a massive influence both as a player and coach.

He was a part of the intermediate and junior football teams that captured North and county honours in 1986 and 1988 but it was for his Gaelic football coaching that will be fondly remembered by many.

During the 1980s and 1990s Nenagh was one of the most dominant clubs in Gaelic football in the county and won numerous honours, both in the North and county during this period, thanks to the influence of John.

With John as coach the club won an impressive seven North Tipperary senior football titles, two North Tipperary intermediate championships, seven under-21 titles and seven minor titles as well as a myriad of juvenile crowns. We also won two county intermediate, two county junior, two county under-21, one county minor, two county under-16, one county under-14 and two under-12 county titles, all in the A grade, under John’s watchful eye.

Thanks to John’s coaching and influence a large number of players from Nenagh Éire Óg and in neighbouring clubs whom he coached, represented Tipperary at inter-county level. He was very proud of the senior career of Mark Sheahan and 1998 was a particularly satisfying time for him as three of his players, Chris Bonar, Jim McAuliffe and captain Kevin Coonan, were part of the Tipperary junior football team that won the Munster and All-Ireland finals. He also coached Brian Farrell who was part of the Tipperary minor football panel in 1995 that captured the Munster title.

John himself was also an accomplished referee who took charge of numerous games within the county while his son Alan has become one of the top up and coming referees in Munster. John was also a selector with the Tipperary under-21 sides in 1993 and 1994 and was heavily involved with numerous divisional North Tipperary sides.

To Alan, Mairead (Young), Enda and Amy, grandchildren Ewan, Ronan, Garvan, Sarah, Noah, Clodagh, Daire, Emmett and Aoife, son-in-law Alan, daughters-in-law Marisa and Orla, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins, neighbours, relatives and friends the club offers its sincerest sympathies.

Everyone in the club sends their congratulations to out very own Laochra Gael, Tommy Mulcahy. “Muller” as he is affectionately known as is fully deserving of this award after a lifetime of service to the GAA and in particular to Nenagh Éire Óg and St. Mary’s Handball Club.

Currently Tommy is the club’s vice president and in the past held every administrative role within the club while he also served as chairperson and secretary of St. Mary’s Handball Club as well as holding various positions at Bord na nÓg level. 

Tommy has more than once put his shoulder to the wheel when it comes to the club and held many managerial roles with adult and juvenile hurling and Gaelic football teams over the decades. A prominent referee he was the man in the middle for numerous championship matches across the county. 

Most, if not all of the players in the club have at some stage been coached by Tommy as it gave countless hours of service to the juveniles and without his enthusiasm and dedication camogie would not be in the prominent position it currently enjoys as he, in the past, coached the game in St. Mary’s primary school and helped them achieve numerous Cumann na mBunscol titles. 

We also extend our congratulations to Anslem Walsh of Shannon Rovers who also picked up a Laochra Gael award. Anslem’s sons Rory and Oisin played with the club at juvenile level while Anslem himself helped coach our juveniles during the 1980s.

Congratulations to all the worthy winners. Without their selfless volunteerism, the GAA would not be in the healthy position it enjoys in Irish society.

Annual General Meeting

The club’s AGM will take place on Thursday, December 13th at 8pm in the club house. We look forward to seeing all club members there on the night as look back at 2018 and look forward to 2019.

Under-11 Gaelic football champions

This week was a historic occasion for the primary schools of the county as for the first time ever all the Gaelic football finals were held in Semple Stadium and Nenagh were represented by Gaelscoil Aonach Urmhumhan. 

The boys were successful in the under-11 final against Fethard while the under-13 girls were unfortunately defeated by St. Joseph’s, Tipperary however, while it is nice to win the importance of having fun and getting to experience playing in Semple Stadium is of far more significance. We wish to thank the school and indeed all the schools in the parish for their continued support of Gaelic games and the staff for kindly volunteering their time to teach the fundamentals of our games to the young boys and girls. 

One Nenagh man deserves huge praise for the continued success of Cumann na mBunscol and that is their PRO John Manly. John has given countless hours over the years organising and promoting this tremendous competition as well as coaching Gaelic games in Nenagh Éire Óg and it was fantastic to see his own school, Dualla NS, capture some silverware in Semple during the week also. 

Congratulations also go to St. Mary’s first year team who captured the county A champions on Wednesday last after great wins over Cashel Community School and Ursuline, Thurles. Kerry Howard played in defence and had two fine games while their senior team advanced in the Munster senior B championship after a great win over Scariff. Meanwhile, Nenagh CBS recorded a 3-10 to 0-9 win over Gaelcholáiste Mhuire an Mhainistir Thuaidh (Cork) in the Dr. Harty Cup and have now advanced to the quarter finals. The draw for the quarter finals will take place next month. Best wishes go to the Nenagh College senior team who are in action tomorrow, Monday.

Collecting Medals

The great Michael Ryan collects the under-11 medals his fantastic side won this year from Robert Byrne and John Sheedy of Portroe on North Tipperary Captains’ Night in the MacDonagh Park complex this weekend.

The Peadar Cummins side were defeated by South Tipperary in the semi final but later beat West Tipperary.

Taurai Shayanewako

We had two players on the under-14 Roger Ryan panel, Conor Tierney and Taurai Shayanewako, who reached the final but were beaten by Mid Tipperary.
