Éire Óg lose out to Lorrha-Dorrha, but battle gamely and will learn from the experience.
County Tipperary Junior A Camogie League
Nenagh Éire Óg 1-5 Lorrha-Dorrha 2-8
The Nenagh Éire Óg junior A Camogie team lost by six points to a fine Lorrha-Dorrha Camogie team in Lorrha on Sunday morning. Despite facing an excellent Lorrha side who are among the favourites for this year’s county title the Blues never gave up and thrilled the travelling support with their never-say-die attitude.
Facing a side who had appeared in the 2013 county junior A Camogie final against Kilruane MacDonagh’s Éire Óg required an encouraging start and got it thanks to points from Rachel Spillane and Julie Moylan – Nenagh led 0-2 to no-score by the 10th minute.
Lorrha responded in style to hit 1-2 without reply and led 1-2 to 0-2 by the 15th minute.
A Ciara McGrath free settled Éire Óg once more, but Lorrha responded with two scores of their own to lead 1-4 to 0-3 by the 26th minute.
To their credit Éire Óg closed out the half in enterprising fashion with a Ciara McGrath free preceding a great point from play by Rachel Spillane in the 28th minute. On the stroke of half-time a stinging Rachel Spillane shot was saved brilliantly by the Lorrha ‘keeper – Éire Óg trailed 0-5 to 1-5 at the break.
Lorrha added two points to their tally immediately after the break before Ali Darcy made a fine save in the 36th minute to deny the home side a certain goal. Lorrha then missed a penalty, but the relentless pressure finally told in the 41st minute when Lorrha scored their second goal – 2-7 to 0-5.
Seven minutes later Lorrha converted a free to bring the scoring to a close from their point of view, but a hard-working Nenagh side got a reward for all their work in the 58th minute when Aisling O’Brien fired home a great goal. Sensing the potential for a dramatic late comeback Éire Óg poured forward, but a Mairéad Sheridan shot was brilliantly saved once more by the Lorrha ‘keeper in the 59th minute.
This group of players are making a terrific effort to develop themselves as a competitive junior A Camogie team and we would encourage all Blues to come out and support the girls.
