Autism Friendly Town
![]()
Nenagh is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Birdhill and Clonakilty in becoming a designated autism-friendly town. The initiative was launched in the Abbey Court Hotel on Friday by Alan Kelly T.D. and autism documentary film-maker Nic Ryan Purcell. They were preaching to the converted in a room packed with a cross section of the town and region as diverse as the autism spectrum itself. As highlighted on the night, if only some of the possible changes necessary were made by businesses, sporting clubs and the Council, they would have a massive positive impact on not just the families on the spectrum but on families dealing with a wide range of issues including dementia and hearing loss. In other words, it will bring a lot of peace to the town. As a club with over 300 juvenile boys and girls, and who play host to numerous senior and county hurling, Gaelic football and camogie matches, Nenagh Éire Óg were well represented on the night are looking forward to engaging with the soon to be formed committee and making MacDonagh Park even more accessible. Well done to all involved and we at Nenagh Éire Óg look forward to the challenge.
Healthy Club Conference 2019
Our thanks goes to Bartley Ryan who attended the annual Healthy Club Conference in Croke Park recently. Our club has been to the fore in the Healthy Club Project since its inception and our thanks goes to Michael Geaney who did trojan work in this area in the past.

Under-15

Well done to our under-15 A Plate hurlers who beat Kilruane MacDonagh’s over the weekend in the North semi-final played in Nenagh. They will face Ballina in the final on Sunday, October 13th with the time and venue to be confirmed. Great hurling lads!
Under-6

Our under-6 boys had their final ‘training’ session in Nenagh College, with thanks to Mikey Heffernan and Adventure World Parties. A great morning’s fun was had by the boys (and their brothers and sisters!) and it was well deserved as they put in a huge effort all year. Well done boys!!
Also, a big thank you to parents who brought the boys to training and blitz’s and helped out at both in any way. It is very much appreciated by all. The club would like to add thanks to Cathal and the fantastic under-6 mentors who worked so hard all year to make a home for our youngest players and their families in MacDonagh Park. The future is bright. Éire Óg Abú!
Well done Paul

Congratulations to minor hurler Paul Ryan who represented Ireland over the weekend in badminton winning a silver medal for his country in the process.

Jimmy Morris and Noreen Ryan Kelly at a camogie game in the Ragg
Wednesday next is going to be a very special day for one of the club’s greatest stalwarts, Jimmy Morris, as he celebrates his 90th birthday. Jimmy has worked tirelessly for the club over the decades and his enthusiasm for the Blues has never wavered as he wears his heart on his sleeve at every match the club plays, be it hurling, football or camogie. We hope Jimmy has a magical day and we look forward to celebrating many more birthdays with him in the future.
Senior Hurling

Our senior hurlers completed the round robin stage of the FBD Insurance county championship on Sunday last defeating Burgess 2-23 to 2-17 with the Nenagh goals coming from Philip Hickey and Jake Morris. The win ensures our progression to the quarter-final of the county championship.
Legends Match in aid of Alzheimers Society of Ireland

Nenagh Éire Óg legends Michael Cleary, Declan O’Meara, Conor O’Donovan, Kevin Tucker and Eddie Tucker
The years were certainly rolled back in MacDonagh Park on Saturday last as the Tipperary legends dusted the cobwebs off their boots, hurleys and helmets and made a welcome return to action as they took on their Limerick counterparts in a charity game in aid of the Alzheimers Society of Ireland. A large crowd gathered and gasped in awe as Kevin Tucker demonstrated, once again, his amazing ability to hit the post from point-blank range as the Premier ran out 4-23 to 4-16 winners. Our thanks go to all the volunteers, players and match officials who made the day such a huge success and we wish the Alzheimers Society of Ireland the very best of luck in the future.

The club’s walking group, in conjunction with the Healthy Club Project, recently climbed Croagh Patrick to raise money for Milford Care Centre and amassed an amazing €7,000 in the process thanks to the generosity of so many. You are all invited to the complex next Friday, September 13th at 8pm where the proceeds will be presented and refreshments provided.
Roll of Honour

Tipperary-All-Ireland Hurling Champions 1925. Inserts: Mick Darcy, Phil Cahill, Jack Darcy. Back Row: Joe McLoughney, Willie Quinn, Arthur O’Donnell, Martin Mockler, Steven Hackett, Jim Hickey, R Nealon, Wedger Meagher. Middle Row: Tom Duffy, Steven Kenny, John Power, Frank McGrath, Johnny Leahy (capt), J J Hayes, Paddy O’Dwyer. Front Row: Paddy Power, Martin Kennedy, Paddy Leahy, Bill Ryan, Martin Flannigan.
We were recently informed of three omissions on our Roll of Honour and we are delighted to include Jack and Mick Darcy who won All-Ireland medals with Tipperary in 1925 when the Premier outclassed Galway 5-6 to 1-5. Indeed, Mick also won an All-Ireland with Dublin in 1924 when the capital defeated Galway 5-3 to 2-6. In the 1925 final the Irish Independent wrote that “Mick Darcy at midfield was an outstanding figure, his well-judged, lengthy pucks never failing to reach the Tipperary forwards. From a “70” he drew cheers by scoring a goal”.
In 2017 Ella Carey played in goals as Borrisokane Community College captured the under-16 Junior-C crown after defeating Abbey Community College 2-8 to 2-4. We are delighted to include all three players in our Roll of Honour and if there are any other omissions please do not hesitate to get in touch with us via our social media channels or email us at eireognenagh@gmail.com

Under-6s
The under-6s finish their season with a blitz next Saturday morning against Kiladangan in Puckane. Last training takes place this Thursday.
Under-12s & Under-10s
Our under-10s and under-12s travelled to St. Judes GAA in Templeogue on Sunday where they received a great welcome from our hosts. The under-12s showed great skill and spirit to come from a goal down at half-time to win by two points. It was a great way to finish the season. The under-10s played three matches each against their St. Judes counterparts and all Nenagh girls played excellent camogie.
The group travelled on to Croke Park for the All-Ireland camogie final where we watched a great contest between Galway and Kilkenny.
Thanks to all the parents who travelled on a long day. Days like these live long in the memory for young girls and are hugely important in keeping their appetite for camogie alive. A big thank you also to Mike Nerney and all the ladies in St. Judes who showed us such great hospitality. We’ll look forward to welcoming them to Nenagh in 2020.

Under-6

Well done to our under-6s who had a great mornings hurling in Cloughjordan on Saturday. Three matches were played against Kilruane MacDonagh’s, Toomevara and Roscrea and the boys were fantastic! A big thanks to Kilruane MacDonagh’s who hosted us and for the fantastic hospitality afterwards. Training as usual on Saturday mornings at 10am and new players are always welcome to come along.
Work Begins on New Grounds

Work began on our new grounds in Streame during the week and everyone in the club are really excited about the ten-acre development and which we will have access to through Grey’s Lane at the scoreboard end of the inside pitch in MacDonagh Park.
With our juvenile and camogie sections growing exponentially in recent years the demands on our two playing fields has grown to an unsustainable level and the new grounds are a much needed acquisition to meet the modern-day demands of the club.
This work will lead to a development of one playing pitch and leave enough room for other developments which have yet to be decided upon.

The All-Ireland medals just keep on rolling in to Tipperary! The under-8 boys welcomed Sixmilebridge, Ahane and Kiladangan to beautiful MacDonagh Park this on Saturday morning. The field committee had the field in great shape for us as always. Fourteen teams took part in total. Éire Óg had 40 boys on five teams which was our biggest number so far this year. All teams played three very entertaining games. There was a huge crowd there supporting the children. Our thanks to all the clubs for travelling. Our parents as always gave a wonderful welcome to the visitors providing lots of healthy and nutritious food. No easy task for 120 boys and their families. Junior-A
Commiserations go to our junior-A hurlers who lost out to an excellent Toomevara side in a pulsating North Tipperary final in Templederry on Sunday last. Entering the closing stages Nenagh were three-points down but fought back to level deep in injury time thanks to a Donnacha Quinn pointed-free. Toomevara had a blistering start to extra time and by the break they led by eight points, a lead Nenagh just could not reel in. Both sides can now look forward to the county championship and who’s to say they won’t meet again in the county final.

All-Ireland Champion Visits MacDonagh Park
On Wednesday, just three days after performing heroics in the All-Ireland final, Barry Heffernan took time out of his busy schedule to visit all the young boys and girls at the Cúl Camp in MacDonagh Park and happily posed for photographs, answered questions as well as joining in in a chant of “Tipp, Tipp, Tipp…”.

The club played Doon recently in the President’s Cup, a tournament to honour all our club presidents and we were delighted to welcome Ger Gavin, Jimmy Morris and five time All-Ireland medal winner Mick Burns to the club on the night. It was fantastic to see the reaction of the players from both sides when they realised they were standing in the presence of greatness as they realised Mick had achieved so much in the game. Thanks to all who made this such a wonderful success.
Cúl Camp
We had a brilliant week this week as the club hosted the Cúl Camp summer camp and we were thrilled and honoured to welcome a host of special guests including All-Ireland champion Barry Heffernan along with the Liam MacCarthy Cup as well as County Board chairman John Devane. We wish to thank Paudie Malone and Dinny Maher from Tipperary Games and Coaching, the coaches and volunteers for all their hard work and making the week a massive success.

Tipperary
There’s no doubt that the weekend belongs to cousins Barry Heffernan and Jake Morris who captured Celtic Crosses for themselves as Tipperary defeated Kilkenny, 3-25 to 0-20, in the All-Ireland senior hurling final. Barry followed in the footsteps of his uncle John by starring in the full-back line and so impressive was his performance that he was nominated for the Sunday Game man of the match accolade. Indeed Barry was instrumental in John O’Dwyer’s goal as he played an impressive ball into space for Seamus Callanan to run onto. Jake was introduced as a 60th minute substitute and fired over an impressive point.
We also wish to commiserate with both Grace O’Brien and Sarah Quigley as the Tipperary senior and intermediate camógs lost their All-Ireland semi-final clashes at the weekend. Unfortunately Grace was ruled out of the game due to concussion and we wish her well in her recovery.
Best of luck to Conor McCarthy, Jake Morris and the Tipperary under-20 hurlers in their All-Ireland final clash with Cork next weekend.
