Jake and Conor are All-Ireland under-20 champions, the junior-A side suffer extra-time heartbreak while Foley’s Inver, Gortlandroe show their generosity
Junior-A
Commiserations go to our junior-A hurlers who lost out to an excellent Toomevara side in a pulsating North Tipperary final in Templederry on Sunday last. Entering the closing stages Nenagh were three-points down but fought back to level deep in injury time thanks to a Donnacha Quinn pointed-free. Toomevara had a blistering start to extra time and by the break they led by eight points, a lead Nenagh just could not reel in. Both sides can now look forward to the county championship and who’s to say they won’t meet again in the county final.

Tipperary

Two proud Nenagh men, Conor and Jake after the Munster final
We send our congratulations to both Conor McCarthy and Jake Morris who played pivotal roles as the Tipperary under-20s defeated Cork in the All-Ireland final on Saturday evening in LIT Gaelic Grounds, 5-17 to 1-18. Tipperary won and the very first and last under-21 crowns and they have continued that tradition by capturing the under-20 title.

Foley’s Inver, Gortlandroe

The camogie club were thrilled with the news during the week that Foley’s Inver on Gortlandroe had kindly sponsored us €1,000 which will be spent on equipment and promoting and encouraging girls to participate in the sport. Their generosity will make it a lot easier for us to keep girls involved in the sport for longer and will have a hugely positive benefit on the local economy.
Senior
Our seniors were heavily defeated by Drom and Inch in the senior championship during the week but all is not lost because if they beat Cashel Camogie Club on Friday evening in Cashel they will make the knock out stages.

We were all deeply saddened to hear of the recent passing of our dear friend Fr. Tom Seymour. A native of Portroe, Fr. Tom was stationed in Nenagh for a long number of years and was a regular visitor to MacDonagh Park where he played cards every week in clubhouse. Fr. Tom became a confidant, friend and advisor to so many in the club and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
We extend our sympathies to his brothers Denis and John (Jack), sisters-in-law Norah and Anna, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, Bishop Fintan Monahan, priests and religious in Killaloe Diocese, relatives, friends and parishioners of the various parishes that he administered.

All-Ireland Champion Visits MacDonagh Park
On Wednesday, just three days after performing heroics in the All-Ireland final, Barry Heffernan took time out of his busy schedule to visit all the young boys and girls at the Cúl Camp in MacDonagh Park and happily posed for photographs, answered questions as well as joining in in a chant of “Tipp, Tipp, Tipp…”.
We wish to thank Tipperary Coaching and Games officers Paudie Malone, Dinny Maher and all the coaches at the camp for their hard work during the week and of course the young boys and girls for their excellent behaviour. To see photographs from Barry’s visit please click here.

Presidents’ Cup

Club chairman Enda Costello, Mick Burns and players from Doon and Nenagh
The club played Doon recently in the President’s Cup, a tournament to honour all our club presidents and we were delighted to welcome Ger Gavin, Jimmy Morris and five time All-Ireland medal winner Mick Burns to the club on the night. It was fantastic to see the reaction of the players from both sides when they realised they were standing in the presence of greatness as they realised Mick had achieved so much in the game. Thanks to all who made this such a wonderful success.
Cúl Camp
We had a brilliant week this week as the club hosted the Cúl Camp summer camp and we were thrilled and honoured to welcome a host of special guests including All-Ireland champion Barry Heffernan along with the Liam MacCarthy Cup as well as County Board chairman John Devane. We wish to thank Paudie Malone and Dinny Maher from Tipperary Games and Coaching, the coaches and volunteers for all their hard work and making the week a massive success.

One of players, Scott O’Brien, recently departed these shores to head across the pond to the USA, more specifically to Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois on a golf scholarship where he will study Business Management. Scott has been a fine goalkeeper in hurling and forward in Gaelic football over the years and we wish him all the best in his studies and golf career.

Jake and Barry are All-Ireland champions, the junior-As gear up for the North final while Conor McCarthy and Jake Morris look to win the under-20 title. All this and more in this week’s news on the Blues
Tipperary
There’s no doubt that the weekend belongs to cousins Barry Heffernan and Jake Morris who captured Celtic Crosses for themselves as Tipperary defeated Kilkenny, 3-25 to 0-20, in the All-Ireland senior hurling final. Barry followed in the footsteps of his uncle John by starring in the full-back line and so impressive was his performance that he was nominated for the Sunday Game man of the match accolade. Indeed Barry was instrumental in John O’Dwyer’s goal as he played an impressive ball into space for Seamus Callanan to run onto. Jake was introduced as a 60th minute substitute and fired over an impressive point.
We also wish to commiserate with both Grace O’Brien and Sarah Quigley as the Tipperary senior and intermediate camógs lost their All-Ireland semi-final clashes at the weekend. Unfortunately Grace was ruled out of the game due to concussion and we wish her well in her recovery.
Best of luck to Conor McCarthy, Jake Morris and the Tipperary under-20 hurlers in their All-Ireland final clash with Cork next weekend.

Hard luck to our under-12s who lost out to a strong Annacarty team in the county league semi final at the Ragg on Sunday. It was a fighting display from the Nenagh girls but just wasn’t going to be our day. We will now play in the shield so training will continue on Thursday. Best of luck to those girls playing with the under-14s on Tuesday evening.

Both the under-6s and under-8s were delighted to play Kilruane and Burgess as part of Kilruane MacDonagh’s 50th anniversary celebrations in Ardcroney. Many thanks for the invitation. Our under-8s also played a blitz in Kilcommon against Moneygall, Toomevara and Kiladangan. The girls played brilliantly and made light of the terrible conditions.

People who book online will receive their gear a few days before the camp starts at a time to be confirmed, while people who book on the Monday will receive their gear on the Tuesday of the camp.
Under-12 Hurling
We commiserate with our under-12 hurlers who put in an almighty effort against Toomevara in the North final on Monday last but came out on the wrong side of a 2-7 to 2-5 scoreline. The club couldn’t be prouder of each and every member of the panel for their hard work and dedication to Nenagh Éire Óg all year in both the A and C grades. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the players, their families and the mentors who all put in countless hours of work. Plenty more sport to come for these boys with the Plate competitions throwing in soon. Keep hurling boys!

Under-14

North Tipperary under-14 A hurling champions 2019
Congratulations go to our under-14 hurlers, who in wet and windy conditions in Templederry, overcame a superb challenge from a brilliant Toomevara side in the North final, winning out on a 2-11 to 2-4 scoreline. Indeed the seven-point gap between the sides belies the true nature of this contest as in reality, Toomevara were much closer to Éire Óg. Jack McLoughlin was in flying form scoring a personal tally of 2-3 while Sam O’Farrell (6) and Filip McIntyre (1) completed the scoring. At the other end Eoin Garrigan had a fine game between the sticks while Keelan Rice at full-back and Mason Cawley wearing number six repelled numerous Toomevara attacks. The lads must now prepare for the county semi-final and we wish them every success as they seek county honours.
For a full range of photographs from the game please click here.

Seamus Rice, Martin Morris, Jimmy Morris and Adrian McIntyre fly the flag high at full time.
Minor Hurling
Our minor hurlers were defeated by Kiladangan in the championship 4-16 to 3-11. Their final game in the round robin series is on Wednesday evening when they play Ballina at 7pm in Portroe. Best of luck lads.
Junior-A Hurling
Our junior-A hurlers had a great win in the North Tipperary semi-final defeating Roscrea 2-15 to 2-12 in Borrisokane on a wet and windy evening last Friday. Two first-half goals from cousins Anthony and Darragh Walsh set the lads on their way and they now face Toomevara in the final in two weeks time. This game will take place on Sunday, August 25, at 3:30pm in Templederry.
Junior-B Football
Hard luck to our footballers who lost out to Éire Óg Annacarty, 0-7 to 0-5, in a wet and windy Kilcommon on Saturday evening. The lads battled bravely throughout but once again Lady Luck shunned us as we failed to get the rub of the green that would have secured the win. This results ends our interest in this year’s county championship and we wish to thank the entire panel and management for all their efforts this year. We still have the 2019 North Tipperary championship to look forward to.
The panel on Saturday evening was Callan Scully, Brian Maxwell, Peter Hynes, Fiachra Starr, Niall McKeogh, Andrew Loughlin, Alex Jones, Christopher Ryan, Seán McTiernan, Jack Molamphy, Gavin O’Connor, Leonard Ryan, Marky Walsh, Kieran Mullarkey, Thomas O’Brien, Michael Hynes, Danny Ryan and Brian Carr.
Croagh Patrick Climb
On Bank Holiday Monday morning last three carloads made the long trek to Croagh Patrick in Mayo to climb the famous mountain in aid of Milford Hospice. The sun was shining and spirits were high as stories and laughs were exchanged. A quick stop in Loughrea fixed all our caffeine needs before we continued on to Mayo and as the mountain emerged from the distance there were a few gulps as we realised the task ahead.

Early morning start outside MacDonagh Park
We enthusiastically set off from the carpark on the 4km climb to the chapel 764 meters above sea level and it wasn’t long before the chit chat disappeared as limbs tired and muscles screamed for mercy but there wasn’t one mention of taking a break, let alone turning around. The group began to fragment as others paced ahead and the terrain became more difficult to navigate. At times we were on all fours as we crawled to summit and for good measure the heavens decided to open as the wind howled ferociously while the rain cascaded down making the underfoot conditions treacherous as newly formed streams began to flow around our feet.
We consoled ourselves with the knowledge that it would quickly blow over and the scenery from the summit would be worth the effort however Mother Nature had other ideas and visibility diminished to about 30 feet and as the chapel emerged from the grey mist we knew we weren’t going to experience the breath-taking views however all were delighted to have scaled Croagh Patrick.
The journey down proved as unforgiving as loose stones, flowing water and wet and windy weather tried their best to break us but with every step carefully considerated we finally descended to the car park below.
What kept us going through each step was the knowledge that so many had kindly donated money to help those in Milford Hospice and we wish to thank all who contributed to this amazing cause. If you would like to donate our Go Fund Me page will remain active for another few days and you can access it here.
Bartley Ryan
You might have noticed that there is one person missing from all the photographs who had cajoled so many of you into parting with your hard-earned cash. Bartley Ryan was supposed to travel, offer moral support to those climbing the mountain and have the tea ready for when we returned to the cars however due to his debilitating condition, Adhesive Mattress Syndrome, he was unable to get out of the bed in time to travel. We all wish Bartley well as he struggles to overcome this chronic illness. A major fundraising drive and Go Fund Me page will be announced in the not too distant future to raise money to help Bartley fight this disease.

The club’s summer camp is a massive success, Nenagh play Gort in the John Tucker Cup while it’s a week to remember at inter-county level for our lads involved. All this and more in this week’s news on the Blues
John Tucker Cup
On Saturday evening the club remembered one of the greatest Nenagh Éire Óg men, John Tucker, with the playing of the John Tucker Cup in MacDonagh Park as we welcomed Gort for a senior hurling match with the Blues winning out in what was a sporting and entertaining contest. John played hurling and Gaelic football for the club for many years and once his playing days were behind him, he coached numerous underage and adult teams winning a myriad of trophies along the way. His influence on the youth of the parish cannot be overstated as he mentored them not just in the skills of Gaelic games, but he taught them many life skills which has helped them develop into the adults they are today.
We wish to thank Gort for travelling down to play us, referee Michael Murphy as well as Andy’s Bar for the delicious catering afterwards. We also want to pay a special tribute to our under-10s who played exhibition matches at half-time which had the huge crowd enthralled and amazed at their fantastic skills.
Junior-A Hurling

Our junior hurlers continued their rich vein of form with a 1-22 to 1-13 win over Burgess in Puckane on Friday evening last in the championship. They play Toomevara this Friday evening in Moneygall at 7pm in the final game of the round robin series.
Junior-B Football

Our junior footballers are back in championship action on Saturday evening when they face Galtee Rovers/St Pecaun in The Ragg at 7:30pm while they face Éire Óg Annacarthy the following week.
Summer Camp

The club’s annual summer camp, held this week, was once again an amazing success with huge numbers of boys and girls participating in an action-packed, fun-filled week of Gaelic football and hurling action. The club wishes to thank all the organisers for the trojan work they put in to once again ensure the camp’s success. The diligent coaches worked extremely hard while the participants were an absolute credit to their families, arriving everyday with big smiles and positive attitudes ensuring that everyone had a great time. We were delighted when Munster under-20 champions Conor McCarthy and Jake Morris arrived with the trophy in hand to meet all the children and happily sign autographs and pose for photographs. All the photographs taken over the week can be viewed on our Facebook page.

Our under-10 girls played a county blitz in Kiladangan GAA club last Saturday. They played teams from Borrisoleigh, Kiladangan, Burgess, Shannon Rovers and Kilruane MacDonagh’s. Training returns this week after the summer camp last week. The girls are playing in a tournament in Kilruane on Monday 4th August to mark the 50th anniversary of the club.

There will be a Cúl Camp in the club from August 19th to August 24th. There are already 100 children booked in so anyone looking to take part should book asap to avoid disappointment. Tipperary
Fans of WWF wrestling in the 1990s will remember the iconic Jake “The Snake” Roberts who’s trademark move, the “DDT”, involved him grabbing his opponents in a headlock before smashing them into the ground for the decisive stunt that won him the bout. There’s no doubt that the Cork under-20 hurlers felt that they had been the victim of a similar move after our very own Jake “The Snake” Morris popped up for the winning goal, with only 21 seconds remaining, to spark euphoric scenes as Tipperary captured the Munster title in Semple Stadium on Tuesday last. And while Jake rightly grabbed all the headlines, at the other end of the pitch Conor McCarthy, who had a superb game, went about his business in an effective and efficient manner as he thwarted numerous Cork attacks from corner back. It was clear what it meant to people from our club as both men were engulfed by familiar faces at full time. The lads must now prepare for the All-Ireland semi-final against Wexford.
Another group waking up this morning after a venomous bite from Jake “the snake” Morris are the boys of Wexford after Tipperary’s stunning 1-28 to 3-20 win in the All-Ireland senior semi-final. Jake was introduced as a second-half substitute and should have finished with 1-1 to his name but the goal was bizarrely ruled out however his point, Tipperary’s last score of the game, was a thing of beauty. At the other end of the pitch Barry Heffernan played a stormer, repelling numerous Wexford attacks and regularly bursting forward to set the Tipp forwards on their way. Barry was unfortunate not to have a point to his name after Hawkeye deemed his brilliant first-half effort went over the post.
The lads are now preparing to meet Kilkenny in the final in three week’s time and the County Board have revealed that there will be an open training session this Wednesday in Semple Stadium from 7pm to 9pm with the meet and greet beginning at 8:15pm.

Barry Coffey

Former Nenagh Éire Óg and current Celtic FC and Republic of Ireland soccer player Barry Coffey made a welcome return to MacDonagh Park on Saturday evening for the John Tucker Cup and it’s clear from his half-time puck around with Jake Morris that he still has the Midas touch. We can’t wait to see Barry again the next time he visits Nenagh.
A rather deflated Dermot McTiernan appeared on our TV screens moments before Jake Morris’s stunner last Tuesday evening

Street Leagues

The Nenagh Éire Óg under-8 street leagues finished up Saturday morning in MacDonagh Park. The leagues ran over the past three weeks and Saturday was the seventh day of them. 33 children represented their areas in town and ten others had also taken part over the past number of weeks but were away on holidays today all over the world in far away places from China, France, Portugal, Poland and to the USA. They left instructions to their teammates before they left that they wanted to win the trophies and to try their best.

We will run a repeat street league finals day in September when they are all back home.
The four teams were from the Borrisokane Road, Thurles & Limerick Roads, Gortlandroe and Benedine.
The four teams lined up for a mini-parade pre-match and stood for Amhrán na bhFiann with their team mates.

All teams played Gaelic football semi-finals first with Gortlandroe and Borrrisokane Road reaching the first and second place final and Limerick/Thurles and Bendine playing the third and fourth place final. Gortlandroe came out on top with a hard earned win by one score. In the hurling Borrisokane Road got revenge on Gortlandroe to reach the first and second place finals against a strong Benedine team. Limerick/Thurles Road and Gortlandroe played out the third and fourth place final. Borrisokane won out the final by the narrowest of margins.

After the games Tipperary and Éire Óg star Conor McCarthy presented each player with a medal and presented the two winning captains with the trophies. Our thanks to Conor and we wish him and the rest of the under-20 team all the best of luck next Tuesday evening against Cork in the Munster Final.
Juvenile Chairman Liam Heffernan commended the children on their great efforts and encouraged them to stay practising and to take part in the club summer camp next week and the Cúl Camp in late August.
A special thanks to our two young whistlers from the under-16 hurling panel for helping out. Thanks also to Catherine McTiernan for all the hard work behind the scenes helping organise the street league.
Under-10

We welcomed the under-10 boys of Michael Cusack’s Hurling Club from South County Galway, a combination of Beagh GAA and Kilbacenty clubs. A wonderful bunch of lads and excellent young hurlers. We look forward to meeting them again. Thanks to our under-10 parents for the wonderful spread of healthy treats for all after the matches.
Under-12 C

Our under-12 group C warriors bowed out of the championship during the week when they lost out to an excellent Newport side in their North Tipperary quarter-final. They have made huge strides in their development this year and should be proud of their efforts playing up a grade in Group C for the first time. Well done to them on their mighty efforts last night and keep up the good work at training!
