The Blues 10km is a fantastic success, excitement is at bursting point as the under-14s get ready for Féile Peil while we announce the launch of our brand new mobile app. All this and more in this week’s bumper edition of the news on the Blues.

All in the club are saddened by the news of the recent passing of John Lawlor.
John served as chairman, secretary and treasurer of Nenagh Éire Óg throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He played hurling and Gaelic football for the club as well as working as a mentor for numerous Gaelic football and hurling teams from juvenile right up to senior. He was the club’s representative to both the North and County Board and was Bord na nÓg secretary between 1964 and 1967.
Later in life he moved to Kilruane MacDonagh’s where he continued his lifelong service to the GAA acting as an administrator and selector with various teams.
His son David played in goals for Nenagh Éire Óg in recent years.
To his wife Mary, sons Damian, Sean and David and daughter Collette we offer our sincerest sympathies.

Jim Kennedy gets his blood pressure checked in MacDonagh Park on Sunday
Sunday morning saw MacDonagh Park become a hive of activity as the Ivers and Cullinan sponsored Blues 5km and 10km runs took place while the HSE organised over thirty stands in the complex.
The first three runners home were Tom Lupton (Portlaoise), David Sheehan (Nenagh) and Alan Kelly (Nenagh). For a full list of results and times from Premier Timing please click here.
Meanwhile in the complex the HSE had over thirty stands offering advice, support, free health checks and even pilates to visitors to the club. This was a wonderfully organised event and everyone who attended were wholesome in their praise of the organisers. At the end we were treated to a wonderful concert from Chimers Choir who performed a number of songs to the appreciative audience.
The club wish to thank the organising committee, the volunteers, stewards and in particular Shane Connolly for all his efforts in ensuring today’s event was a wonderful success.

We are thrilled to reveal our brand new mobile app which has gone live in the last few days. Created and developed by the talented Seán McTiernan it is now available to all android users. Our senior hurlers defeated Portroe in the final game of the round robin stage of the Tipperary Water county league on Sunday morning, 4-16 to 2-9, with Conor Hennessy, Cian O’Farrell, Philip Hickey and Seán Phelan bagging the goals. This means the lads have now qualified for the semi-finals as they bid to retain their title. We send Michael McNamara the very best as he recovers from an injury picked up in this game.

Our junior-A hurlers continued their good run in this year’s championship defeating Roscrea in the second round of the North Tipperary championship on Friday evening last 1-14 to 1-13. With thirteen minutes to play the Blues were five-points down but showed great composure and determination to reel in an excellent Roscrea side. Aided by a 51st minute Cian O’Farrell goal, Eddie Tucker’s side never panicked and it was substitute Eoghan Slattery who popped over the winning point with just three minutes remaining.

We wish Barry Heffernan, Jake Morris and the Tipperary senior hurlers the very best of luck next Sunday as they take on Limerick in the Munster senior hurling final in Páirc na nGael. Limerick are chasing their twentieth title while Tipperary are going for their 43rd.
Commiserations to Grace O’Brien and the Tipperary senior camogie side who were defeated by Cork in the Liberty Insurance All-Ireland championship on Saturday, 2-20 to 1-8. Grace started the game at corner forward and supplied two of Tipperary’s points, one in either half. Tipperary will play the replay of the abandoned match against Waterford next Saturday in Nowlan Park, Kilkenny.

Féile Peil 2019
Féile players with members of the senior hurling panel on Sunday morning
Excitement is almost at bursting point as the boys put their final preparations together for next weekend’s Féile Peil 2019 competition. We are playing in Division Two and have been drawn in the same group as our hosts Ballina Stephenites (Mayo), Knockmore (Mayo) and St. Patrick’s, Donaghmore (Tyrone).
On Friday evening we will play Knockmore (17:30) and St. Patrick’s Donaghmore (19:00), with both of these games going ahead in Knockmore. The following morning we are lining out against our hosts Ballina Stephenites at 10:45am in Ballina.
On Sunday morning members of the senior hurling panel gathered on the inside pitch, were blindfolded and had to turn ten times, making them slightly dizzy, before attempting to kick a football. The pitch had been divided into grids by Mel Gleeson and where ever the ball ended up decided the winners of our Square Ball competition. We wish to thank all who bought tickets for this fundraiser and everyone who organised it.

Under-8
Our under-8 boys travelled to Cloughjordan on Saturday morning to play against Kilruane MacDonagh’s and Lorrha Dorrha. As always it was really well organised and the boys had a great time. Lots of our boys had played in a schools blitz in Éire Óg on Friday representing St Mary’s BNS and Gaelscoil Aonach Urmhumhan. Over 150 boys took part in the school blitz.
For some of the primary school children it was their first time playing hurling and we would love to welcome new players to the club to try out hurling or Gaelic football. We are starting a street league in Gaelic football this Tuesday from 6pm until 7pm and in hurling on Wednesday from 5.30pm until 6.30pm. It will run for a few weeks at the same time. If any new players would like to play they need a gumshield for football, for hurling they can borrow a hurley and helmet from the club. Anyone interested in coming along can turn up on the night or contact 0874086439.

Our minor hurlers travelled to Clare on Saturday to take on Sixmilebridge in a challenge game before enjoying an afternoon’s paint-balling. Our thanks go to the management of the panel for organising the day.

Best of luck to the under-16s who have their first match of the league next Tuesday away to Portroe at 7.30p.m.
Under-12
The under-12s played very well to beat Lorrha in the County League. This week we play at home to Toomevara in the next round of the County League. Fixture TBC. Congratulations to all of the girls who played in the Cumann na mBunscoil finals in Semple Stadium.
Under-10
Under-10 girls have a county blitz in Borrisoleigh this coming Saturday. Training continues Monday and Thursday as usual.
Gaelscoil Aonach Urmhumhan
Congratulations to the students of Gaelscoil Aonach Urmhumhan who played in two county finals this week in the Cumann na mBunscol competitions. The under-11 boys defeated Tipperary CBS 5-6 to 4-5 while they also defeated Powerstown 4-9 to 4-6. In the camogie they beat Upperchurch 2-4 to 0-1. Afterwards they paid Michael Cleary a visit in JKCs where they enjoyed an ice-cream.

This Sunday’s annual Toyota and Ivers and Cullinan sponsored 10k and 5k fun runs take place in MacDonagh Park and this year’s event sees the HSE and numerous other local organisations provide information stands for the entire community
Our annual 10k and 5k run begins this Sunday morning at 10:30am and this year’s event offers something for the entire community.

His funeral arrangements are as follows: Reposing at Ryan’s Funeral Home, Nenagh this Wednesday from 4 o’c with removal at 7 o’c to arrive to St. Michael and John’s Church, Cloughjordan at 8 o’c. Requiem Mass on Thursday at 11 o’c followed by burial in Grawn Graveyard.
Nenagh Éire Óg will be providing a guard of honour from Ryan’s Funeral Home at 7pm tomorrow evening and all members are invited to participate.

This year’s event, which is being built as a health and well-being day for the entire community, is in conjunction with the HSE and there will be free health checks, wellness advice and tips on healthy eating. Prices are €15 for the 10km run, €10 for the 5km run and €5 for the walk. We look forward to seeing a huge crowd there from both the club and wider community.

Our congratulations go to Jake Morris, Barry Heffernan and the Tipperary senior hurlers who qualified for the Munster final following their great win over Limerick in Semple Stadium. Jake chipped in with a fine point but the lads will have it all to do again as they’ll meet the Treaty once again in the final in two weeks’ time in the Gaelic Grounds.
We also commiserate with Paul McLoughlin and the county minor hurlers who ended their interest in the 2019 championship following the loss to Limerick over the weekend. Our own Richie Flannery is the current coach of the Limerick minors and we wish him the very best as they prepare for the Munster final.
Grace O’Brien in action against Waterford
Grace O’Brien scored a fine point for the Tipperary seniors against Waterford in the Munster championship in The Ragg on Saturday. Unfortunately the game had to be abandoned following an injury to Nicole Walsh and we wish the Borris-Ileigh star the very best in her recovery.
Jack McLoughlin, Mason Cawley, Cian Connolly and Zac Keller who all made their inter-county debuts on Saturday when they travelled to MacHale Park to play Mayo in four fantastic Gaelic football matches. Filip McIntyre is also part of the panel but wasn’t available on Saturday. Well done lads, the first games of many in the Blue and Gold we hope.

School Blitz
The club are running a school blitz for St. Mary’s BNS and Gaelscoil Aonach Urmhumhan on Friday 21st May in MacDonagh Park for senior infants and first-class students. We hope all the young players have a fantastic day in what will be for many their first taste of hurling.

The Adare and Nenagh hurlers following the blitz on Sunday in MacDonagh Park
We hosted Adare on Sunday morning for some wonderful hurling matches with tremendous skills and talent on display from both clubs. Adare travelled onto Thurles for the big match afterwards.
Under-8
The under-8 boys travelled to Toomevara to play the hosts Ballina and Roscrea. All clubs had three teams on the day. There was great hurling from all teams. Former Tipperary winning captain and current county senior hurling coach Tommy Dunne spoke to all the boys after the blitz encouraging them all to get out practicing at every opportunity. Training continues this week with Gaelic football on Tuesday at 6.00 and hurling Wednesday at 5.30. We are looking to run a street league over the next number of weeks in hurling and football. We hope to get as many new players up to the field as possible over the next few months to try out hurling or football. If anyone new wishes to come along and play or enter the street league they can ring 0874086439 for more information.

Action from the under-12 C match against Shannon Rovers
The Late Johnny McGrath
It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of one of our all-time greatest hurlers Johnny McGrath during the week.
Johnny was born in 1932 at Pound Street Nenagh. In his youth he attended Nenagh CBS and was a member of the Harty Cup side for two years in the late 1940’s. He played minor for Nenagh Éire Óg for four years and won three north minor medals and two football medals playing at center forward. He played with the 1949 senior team when they were narrowly beaten by Roscrea. Playing at left wing back, he won a minor All-Ireland with Tipperary in 1949 when they beat Kilkenny. He emigrated to the United States in 1950 where he played with Tipperary for a number of years and won three championships. He returned to England in 1954 and played with St Finbarr’s in Coventry with whom he won two English Championships.
On returning to Nenagh in 1956, he won two North senior medals in 1957 against Toomevara at full forward and in 1964 against Roscrea at full back. He was a member of the of the Tipperary senior hurling team from 1958 to 1960 and won both a national league playing at wing back and a senior medal playing at full forward in 1958. He retired from hurling in 1967 at the age of 35.
Johnny McGrath was a fearless and courageous hurler. When at full forward, he was the conductor of the orchestra and when full back he controlled his area and acted as protector in chief of his goalkeeper and younger team mates. He was a powerfully built man who could more than hold his own under the dropping ball. Favouring the first time pull, in one particular match he took a drop shot at an opposition puck out and dispatched the ball back over the opposition bar. In a league match with Tipperary he once scored a truly spectacular goal when despite having his back to goal and a defender wrapped around him, he still managed to double a dropping ball to the net as he was wrestled over backwards.
A class act, who had all the requisite skills to function as a back or a forward, his favourite playing position was the half-back line. The best hurler he encountered was Sean Clohessy of Kilkenny and Terry Leahy who played with Kilkenny in New York. His most memorable game was the 1964 North final and his biggest regret was in losing the 1949 North final by two points. While “The Digger” was his favourite selector, his sweetest victory was Pound street beating Islandbawn in a street league final!
To his loving daughters Carol (Dalton), Marguerite (McGrath), Norma (Costello), Christine (Kiely), son Denis and their mother Margaret, sisters Pauline, Eileen and Noreen, grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews and nieces, cousins, neighbours, relatives and friends we offer our sincerest condolences.

Senior Hurling
Our senior hurlers lost out to Roscrea on Sunday in the Tipperary Water county league on a 1-23 to 0-17 scoreline. Our final game is against Portroe in two week’s time.
Junior-A and Junior-B Hurling
Both our junior-A and junior-B hurlers were due to play championship this weekend but both matches were postponed due to a bereavement.
John Kissane Football Sevens
The Nenagh Éire Óg team who participated in the John Kissane Football Sevens
Bank holiday Monday saw the inaugural John Kissane Football Sevens take place in MacDonagh Park and a fantastic day’s football was enjoyed by all. There were two tournaments, a juvenile and adult competition with Kiladangan winning the adult while both Kiladangan and Newport won the juvenile trophies. Our thanks go to Joe Mulqueen and Andy’s Bar for the great food, Permanent TSB Nenagh for the kind sponsorship, the referees Alan Kissane, Christy McLoughlin and Tommy Ryan, the Tipperary Football Committee for all their help as well as the army of volunteers from the club who left no stone unturned to ensure it was a fantastic occasion.

All that any club can ask of their juvenile players is that they take to the field with pride in their club and parish and a determination to leave everything that they have on that field. That, they most certainly did. We are all very proud of the boys, their mentors and families. Onwards and upwards now for this team as they prepare to represent Tipperary in Féile Peile na nÓg in Mayo at the end of June. Éire Óg Abú!

We had mixed results from the under-12s this week. On Tuesday we beat Burgess 3-6 to 0-5 while we were beaten by Shannon Rovers on Thursday 6-3 to 1-4. Lorrha and Dorrha beat us 2-7 to 1-4 on Sunday.

Don’t forget the Permanent TSB sponsored John Kissane Football Sevens tournament takes place tomorrow in MacDonagh Park with the juvenile tournament beginning at 13:30 while the adult competition commences at 17:00. Nenagh Éire Óg are joined by Kiladangan, Portroe, Upperchurch Drombane, Seán Treacy’s, Lorrha and Dorrha and JK Bracken’s in competing for the adult title. Food will be available in the main hall from 5pm provided by Andy Flynn’s.
Senior Hurling
Our senior hurlers defeated Toomevara in the Tipperary Water county league on Tuesday evening last in St. Michael’s Park. Killian Gleeson set us up with an early goal and we finished three point winners, 1-21 to 1-18.
Well done to Tipp Senior hurlers Barry Heffernan and Jake Morris and the team on another solid display. Hard luck to the minor team and our own Paul McLoughlin on their loss to Clare.

Juvenile News
U6: Great to see so many boys take the field again on Saturday morning. Keep up the practice and thanks to all of the parents for your enthusiasm and support.
U8: Big day in of football in MacDonagh Park tomorrow, Monday, as our under 14s play their county semi final at 11.30am. The John Kissane tournament is on later in the day with the Under 11s playing from 2.00pm and the seniors from 5.00pm. Be great for the boys to go along to some of the younger games and see what’s ahead of them over the next few years. Keep up the hard work at training boys.
U12: Both groups A and C begin the U12 league this week with Group A away to Burgess on Tuesday evening. The C group are home to Shannon Rovers at 7.30pm on Thursday.
U14: The best of luck to the lads in their county semi-final in Nenagh tomorrow, Monday at 11.30am. All support appreciated!
U16: The junior cert throws in for many of our hurlers this week. Good luck, don’t stress and all will work out just fine!
Camogie News
U12: Our U12 girls hosted Kiladangan on Tuesday evening in Nenagh in our first round of the league. While we were beaten, we can take many positives from the game. Round two will see us travel to Moneygall on Bank Holiday Monday to face the home team at 6.30pm.

Bereavement
Nenagh Éire Óg offer our sincere condolences to the Maher and O’ Sullivan families on the untimely loss of Sinéad, a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, sister and so much more to so many. Our thoughts are with her husband Eoin Maher, her children Daire, Seán and Clodagh, her mother Helen, sisters Margaret, Mary and Áine, brothers Enda and John, parents-in-law Tim and Dolores, aunts, uncle, and wider family. The club would like to send special condolences to our friend, Enda, club PRO, who is there for everyone from U6 – Junior B in hurling, camogie and football. As you are all aware Leaving Cert exam time is upon us with many young people and their families coming under pressure to ensure everyone stays calm in the run up to the exam.
Jigsaw, the organisation devoted to helping young people with all aspects of mental health wellbeing see a 35% increase in the number of young people engaging with its services in the run up to summer exams. Nearly half of young people use the internet to obtain information and support on their mental health and wellbeing.
On May 14th Jigsaw launched https://jigsawonline.ie/ which provides free information on all aspects of youth mental health. This website is aimed at young people, parents and teachers it offers resources, case studies and advise on a range of issues affecting young people’s mental health.
If you’re feeling anxious about state exams, you’re not alone. Many students come to Jigsaw because they’re overwhelmed about the upcoming Leaving Cert. Check out tips and strategies for getting through the Leaving Cert. Remember, it is okay not to feel okay.

Hard luck to our junior-A hurlers who were beaten by Toomevara in the North Tipperary league final on Sunday evening in Kilcolman. Nenagh led 0-12 to 0-9 but Toomevara, with the aid of a strong breeze finished strongly to win by 0-22 to 1-15. The Éire Óg goal was scored by Shane Maher. Best wishes to Toomevara’s Colm Canning who picked up an injury during the game.
John Kissane Football Sevens

The Tipperary Football Committee, in conjunction with Nenagh Éire Óg and Permanent TSB, Nenagh, are proud to announce the inaugural John Kissane Sevens, a Gaelic football tournament to be held in MacDonagh Park Nenagh on June 3rd, Bank Holiday Monday.
This event comprises of two tournaments, a juvenile competition as well as a seven-a-side adult contest featuring several clubs from across North Tipperary and is an integral part of the recently published strategic plan for Tipperary football which can be viewed on the Friends of Tipperary Football website.
The Nenagh adult team are going to be managed by both Eddie Tucker and Leonard Ryan.
The juvenile tournament is expected to commence at 2pm while the adult competition will throw in at 5pm. There are specially commissioned medals for both events while the winners of the adult competition will receive O’Neill’s designed half-zips.
Food on the day will be provided by Joe Mulqueen of Andy’s Bar, Nenagh.
The event is open to the public and we look forward to seeing huge numbers turn out and join us in remembering a man who did so much to promote Gaelic football.

Grace O’Brien in action in the Munster final
Commiserations to Grace O’Brien and the Tipperary senior camogie side who were unfortunately defeated by Cork in the Munster final on Saturday in Leahy Park, Cashel. Grace was introduced as a second half substitute and made a big impact scoring two points but it wasn’t enough to save Tipperary.
Next weekend the senior hurlers travel to Cusack Park, Ennis to play Clare in the next round of the Munster championship and we send Jake Morris, Barry Heffernan and all involved our best wishes.

The clubs annual 10km run, in associate with the HSE, will take place on Sunday, 23rd June from MacDonagh Park. This is a wonderful community event and there’s still plenty of time to begin training. Here is a handy link to those of you brave enough to begin the challenge: 10k in four weeks
