A North title won, a senior inter-county debut and a player of the year accolade, there is plenty of news in this week’s club notes
North Tipperary Community Games Champions 2018
Tipperary
Congratulations to both Grace O’ Brien and Sarah Quigley who played for the Tipperary senior team yesterday evening in their 1-24 to 1-13 win over Limerick in the Munster semi-final. Indeed, it was a memorable evening for the Nenagh ladies as Grace scored Tipperary’s goal while Sarah was making her senior championship debut. The team now face Cork in the provincial decider and we wish them the very best of luck.
Hard luck to Hazel McAuliffe and Ruth Hassett who were part of the Tipperary intermediate side defeated by Cork in the Munster championship.

We also extend our best wishes to Callan Scully and the Tipperary minor footballers who face Clare in the Munster semi-final this Tuesday evening in Semple Stadium at 7pm. A Premier win will not only see the team advance to the Munster final but also guarantee football throughout the summer as they will also qualify for the All-Ireland series. Callan has been simply outstanding in his three championship matches to date and it would be fantastic to see a large crowd from the club there to support him this Tuesday.

Shane Connolly
One man that has more than made his mark on the club is Shane Connolly. Shane was part of an extremely successful underage team in Nenagh Éire Óg and he has passed on his vast knowledge of the game to numerous boys and girls over the years through coaching and managing various hurling, Gaelic football and camogie sides. Congratulations Ruth Hassett
One camogie player who has been setting the world alight in recent times is Ruth Hassett. Winner of an All-Ireland under-18 title in 2016 with Tipperary she has carried her exceptional form into colleges camogie where she now plays for the National University of Ireland, Maynooth and her performances have been acknowledged as she was recently awarded their fresher camogie player of the year award. Congratulations Ruth from everyone in the club.

The 2018 Tipperary GAA Clubs’ Draw has recently been launched and once again there are amazing prizes on offer for lucky winners including the Skoda Karoq and Renault Megane and a prize fund of a whopping €500,000.

Sympathies
The club would like to express its condolences to Catherine McTiernan and family following the recent passing of her brother Noel Russell, Carrick Swan. Noel was an exceptional hurler with his club winning many South under-21 and senior medals and was also a highly regarded coach mentoring various Tipperary minor and under-21 sides where a number of Nenagh Éire Óg players benefited from his knowledge of the game.

Action from the senior league match against Drom & Inch
Senior
Our senior camogie team had mixed results this week. On Thursday evening they travelled to The Ragg to take on Drom & Inch and were missing a large number of players due to exam and inter-county commitments and were beaten however those that played deserve huge credit for their performances as they battled all the way to the full-time whistle. The team had much better luck however on Saturday evening as they overcame the challenge poised by Clonoulty Rossmore in MacDonagh Park, 1-11 to 0-8, a result that ensures the side have qualified for the league semi-finals. They have one match left to play against Éire Óg Annacarty and this is expected to take place next weekend.
Under-16
Our under-16 side qualified for the C county final today after a 4-7 to 1-2 win over Borris-ileigh. They await the winners of Drom & Inch and Boherlahan and this game is due to take place next weekend. Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday at 17:30.

We played out a thrilling draw with neighbours Kiladangan, 1-4 apiece, on Wednesday evening in MacDonagh Park. This is no fixture this week and training continues at the usual times.
Under-12
Training continues at 6pm on Tuesdays and 5.30pm on Thursdays. We play our final group match away to Portroe at 7pm on Wednesday evening.

The Nenagh Éire Óg camogie club are thrilled to reveal the celebrity chef for this year’s Come Dine With Me fundraiser in the Hibernian Inn on Friday 11th May.
Winner of two All-Ireland titles, four Munster medals, two National hurling leagues and four All Star awards with Tipperary, as well as a county senior hurling championship with Nenagh Éire Óg, Michael Cleary is going to be the head chef for the evening.
Michael has been hugely successful in management leading Tipperary to their very first All-Ireland camogie title in 1999 and two more successes in 2000 and 2001 and there is no doubt that he will use these leadership skills in the kitchen as he puts his own unique stamp on the menu.
A hugely successful business man, he owns and operates JKC’s in Nenagh and it is fitting that he has teamed up with another local success story, Nenagh Éire Óg camogie club, to deliver what promises to be a wonderful evening of food, drink and lots of fun.
Music on the night will be provided by the brilliant Dufrane and the eight players who won county junior-B, junior-A and intermediate medals with the club will be honoured.
Tickets cost €20 or three for the amazing price of €50 and can be purchased from any committee member.

North Tipperary Community Games
Congratulations to our under-11 side who this evening defeated a fantastic Kilruane MacDonaghs side to clinch the North Tipperary Community Games title on a 4-2 to 2-2 scoreline. This side is managed by Kevin Tucker, Willie O’ Brien, Sean McTiernan, Kevin Connolly, John Kennedy and David Minogue.
Well done to both sides on skilful, sporting display and there is no doubt both clubs have many superstars in the making.

Our senior hurlers qualified for the Hibernian Inn North Tipperary senior hurling semi-final following a 2-23 to 0-9 win over neighbours Burgess in St Michael’s Park, Toomevara this evening. John Fitzgerald’s outfit were in super form throughout and had first-half goals on the board from Jake Morris and Michael Heffernan. Our next championship game is likely to take place in late August or September when the Tipperary senior hurlers and footballers’ interest ends in the 2018 championships. However, the team will still have plenty of hurling to look forward to over the summer with the county league. Well done to all concerned.
Junior-A
Bob O’ Brien on the attack against Toomevara
Our junior-A side recorded a 2-25 to 2-20 win over Toomevara in St Michael’s Park on Friday evening in the final round of the group stage of the North Tipperary junior-A league and have completed this stage of the league with a 100% success rate. The team now advance to a play-off with Toomevara with the winners going forward to the league semi-final. This play-off match is expected to take place on May 11th.
Under-21
Our under-21 hurling side kick off their North Tipperary campaign on Saturday evening next at 7pm in Dolla against Toomevara.
Tipperary
Congratulations to Callan Scully and the Tipperary minor footballers who defeated Waterford in Lemybrien on Wednesday last 2-11 to 2-6. The side now face Clare in Semple Stadium on Tuesday May 8th at 7pm. Callan himself gave an assured display and could not be faulted for the two Déise goals. Well done Callan from everyone in the club.
1998 All-Ireland Junior Football Champions
It is coming up to the twentieth anniversary of the All-Ireland junior football triumph when Tipperary defeated Offaly in Portlaoise and our own Kevin Coonan became the first North Tipperary man to captain a Premier side to All-Ireland football glory. This team featured four Nenagh Éire Óg men, players Jim McAuliffe, Chris Bonar and the aforementioned Kevin Coonan while Martin Healy was a selector. Under-6 and under-8.
The girls had their first outdoor training session last Thursday week and over 40 girls trained. They had great fun thanks to the wonderful help from the parents who have really bought into the whole set up. Training continues every Thursday from 6pm to 7pm. New players are always more than welcome.
Under-10
The under-10s had their first outing of the season when they took part in a well run blitz in Borrisoleigh on Saturday morning. Well done to all the girls who had a great day out. Training continues Mondays at 5.30pm and Thursdays at 6 pm. Newcomers are always made very welcome.
Under-12
Training continues Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6 o clock. We have a match away to Roscrea at 7pm this Thursday.
Under-14
We have a match at home against Kiladangan this Tuesday at 7pm.
Under-16
We are playing our county quarter-final against Gortnahoe Glengoole in Nenagh at 7pm on Monday evening.
Senior
Matches this week are away to Drom & Inch at 7.15pm on Thursday and home to Clonoulty Rossmore on Saturday at 6.45pm.
Come Dine With Me
Our club social outing this year is our famous Come Dine With Me at the Hibernian Inn on Friday May 11th at 8pm. Music is by the wonderfully talented Dufrane who would have a smidgen of blue blood in their veins. Tickets are 20 euro each or 50 euro for three for a wonderful night with a very special guest to be announced soon.
Eight players who were on our junior-B, junior-A and intermediate county winning sides will be honoured as will one of the club’s pioneers. It will be also a night to fete our major sponsors. It promises to be a great night. Tickets can be purchased from any manager or committee member. They are selling well and it’s limited to 110 so be quick or you’ll miss out the social event of the year.

Well done to our senior hurlers who recorded a comprehensive 4-24 to 0-14 win over Ballina in Newport on Saturday evening. Paddy Murphy was on fire scoring three second-half goals while James Mackey set the tone for the night scoring the games first score, a goal following a long Shane Hennessy puck out. We have been drawn to face neighbours Burgess in the quester final and this game is expected to take place in Toomevara on Sunday at 18:45.

Our under-16 footballers were unfortunately beaten by a superb Kilruane MacDonaghs side on Friday evening Nenagh 6-6 to 2-2. A notable mention must go to Darragh Ryan who produced a stunning second half penalty save. In a tremendous act of sportsmanship, the lad who missed the penalty, went out of his way to congratulate Darragh on his fine save during the next break in play. A fantastic young ambassador for the Kilruane MacDonaghs club. The lads now face Ballina in Ballina on Monday at 7pm and your support would be appreciated.

On Friday May 11th the camogie club are hosting a Come Dine With Me evening in The Hibernian Inn with a special guest celebrity chef. For €20 you will receive a two-course meal and a complimentary glass of wine while being entertained by the marvellous Dufrane. They do say ‘three’s a crowd’ but not on this occasion as three tickets are priced at the amazing €50! Darkness into Light
The annual Darkness into Light walk, in aid of Pieta House, takes place on Saturday May 12th at 4:15am. Nenagh Éire Óg juvenile club will provide a number of stewards on the night and it is a wonderful opportunity for us as a club to help support a worth while cause and participate in a community event. Well done to our Junior A hurlers who won their second match of the 2018 North Tipperary Junior A hurling league with a deserved eight-point win over Knockshegowna in Ballingarry this evening. Played in miserable conditions the team followed up their great win over Kilruane MacDonaghs with another fine performance.
The team was as follows: Dáire Gleeson, Connie O’ Reilly, Brian Tuite, Alex Jones, Conor Bonar, Brian Maxwell, Mark Flannery, Niall McKeogh, Christopher Ryan, John Cahalan, Killian Malone, Darragh Walsh, Craig Hilmi, Niall Madden, Adam Healy. The Blues 10K & 5K Fun Run/Walk will return to the streets of Nenagh on Sunday, July 16th (10.30am). Entry to the 10K run is priced at €15, entry to the 5K run is priced at €10 and entry to the 5K for walkers is priced at €10 per family.
Prizes: €75 for the first-placed male and female competitor in the 10K, €50 for the second-placed male and female and €25 for the third-placed male and female competitors. Nenagh Éire Óg Healthy Club Project invite you to an evening on Gambling & Addiction Awareness in the Abbey Court Hotel, Wednesday December 7th at 7.30pm.
This event is open to players from all clubs and anyone from the wider community who would be interested in attending.

Justin Campbell
(Former Galway Hurler)
As a professionally trained addiction counsellor, there’s no day Justin’s not meeting people in need of help. He combines his working life and coaching hurling teams with very active membership of the GAA’s National Health and Wellbeing Committee.
Justin Campbell won an All-Ireland U-21 medal in 1991 and played for the Galway senior team from 1992 to the end of that decade. He also won an All-Ireland Club Championship title with his club Kiltormer.
“By the age of 14, I had the misfortune to lose both of my parents to cancer. This was a very difficult time for me as a teenager as I hadn’t the tools to deal with the harsh realities of life…
Alcohol made me feel normal… I eventually put my hand up and asked for help.
I found it very difficult to admit there was something wrong. Little did I know that that is where you become really powerful? It was the best decision of my life.

Niall McNamee
(Offaly Footballer)
Niall McNamee has played 14 years inter-county football for Offaly, and has been one of the top forwards in the country from the mid-2000s. He has also enjoyed great success with his local club Rhode over the years. He is a player engagement officer for the Gaelic Players Association and also one of their mental health ambassador’s specialising in addiction recovery, specifically gambling.
“I had done a lot of things I wasn’t proud of and this was eroding away my soul and my spirit. I knew I was a good person but somewhere along the way I lost sight of the important things in life like my family and friend… When I eventually told my father what was going on and explained the trouble I was in, it was like the biggest weight imaginable was lifted off me.” – Niall McNamee
