The Late Johnny McGrath

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of one of our all-time greatest hurlers Johnny McGrath during the week.

Johnny was born in 1932 at Pound Street Nenagh. In his youth he attended Nenagh CBS and was a member of the Harty Cup side for two years in the late 1940’s. He played minor for Nenagh Éire Óg for four years and won three north minor medals and two football medals playing at center forward. He played with the 1949 senior team when they were narrowly beaten by Roscrea. Playing at left wing back, he won a minor All-Ireland with Tipperary in 1949 when they beat Kilkenny. He emigrated to the United States in 1950 where he played with Tipperary for a number of years and won three championships. He returned to England in 1954 and played with St Finbarr’s in Coventry with whom he won two English Championships.

On returning to Nenagh in 1956, he won two North senior medals in 1957 against Toomevara at full forward and in 1964 against Roscrea at full back. He was a member of the of the Tipperary senior hurling team from 1958 to 1960 and won both a national league playing at wing back and a senior medal playing at full forward in 1958. He retired from hurling in 1967 at the age of 35.

Johnny McGrath was a fearless and courageous hurler. When at full forward, he was the conductor of the orchestra and when full back he controlled his area and acted as protector in chief of his goalkeeper and younger team mates. He was a powerfully built man who could more than hold his own under the dropping ball. Favouring the first time pull, in one particular match he took a drop shot at an opposition puck out and dispatched the ball back over the opposition bar. In a league match with Tipperary he once scored a truly spectacular goal when despite having his back to goal and a defender wrapped around him, he still managed to double a dropping ball to the net as he was wrestled over backwards.

A class act, who had all the requisite skills to function as a back or a forward, his favourite playing position was the half-back line. The best hurler he encountered was Sean Clohessy of Kilkenny and Terry Leahy who played with Kilkenny in New York. His most memorable game was the 1964 North final and his biggest regret was in losing the 1949 North final by two points. While “The Digger” was his favourite selector, his sweetest victory was Pound street beating Islandbawn in a street league final!

To his loving daughters Carol (Dalton), Marguerite (McGrath), Norma (Costello), Christine (Kiely), son Denis and their mother Margaret, sisters Pauline, Eileen and Noreen, grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews and nieces, cousins, neighbours, relatives and friends we offer our sincerest condolences.

Senior Hurling

Our senior hurlers lost out to Roscrea on Sunday in the Tipperary Water county league on a 1-23 to 0-17 scoreline. Our final game is against Portroe in two week’s time.

Junior-A and Junior-B Hurling

Both our junior-A and junior-B hurlers were due to play championship this weekend but both matches were postponed due to a bereavement. 

John Kissane Football Sevens

Bank holiday Monday saw the inaugural John Kissane Football Sevens take place in MacDonagh Park and a fantastic day’s football was enjoyed by all. There were two tournaments, a juvenile and adult competition with Kiladangan winning the adult while both Kiladangan and Newport won the juvenile trophies. Our thanks go to Joe Mulqueen and Andy’s Bar for the great food, Permanent TSB Nenagh for the kind sponsorship, the referees Alan Kissane, Christy McLoughlin and Tommy Ryan, the Tipperary Football Committee for all their help as well as the army of volunteers from the club who left no stone unturned to ensure it was a fantastic occasion.

Our junior-A hurlers are beaten in the league final, details of the John Kissane Sevens are revealed while Grace O’Brien scores two points in the Munster final. All this and more in this week’s news on the Blues

Junior-A

Hard luck to our junior-A hurlers who were beaten by Toomevara in the North Tipperary league final on Sunday evening in Kilcolman. Nenagh led 0-12 to 0-9 but Toomevara, with the aid of a strong breeze finished strongly to win by 0-22 to 1-15. The Éire Óg goal was scored by Shane Maher. Best wishes to Toomevara’s Colm Canning who picked up an injury during the game.

John Kissane Football Sevens

The Tipperary Football Committee, in conjunction with Nenagh Éire Óg and Permanent TSB, Nenagh, are proud to announce the inaugural John Kissane Sevens, a Gaelic football tournament to be held in MacDonagh Park Nenagh on June 3^rd, Bank Holiday Monday.

This event comprises of two tournaments, a juvenile competition as well as a seven-a-side adult contest featuring several clubs from across North Tipperary and is an integral part of the recently published strategic plan for Tipperary football which can be viewed on the Friends of Tipperary Football website.

The Nenagh adult team are going to be managed by both Eddie Tucker and Leonard Ryan.

The juvenile tournament is expected to commence at 2pm while the adult competition will throw in at 5pm. There are specially commissioned medals for both events while the winners of the adult competition will receive O’Neill’s designed half-zips.

Food on the day will be provided by Joe Mulqueen of Andy’s Bar, Nenagh.

The event is open to the public and we look forward to seeing huge numbers turn out and join us in remembering a man who did so much to promote Gaelic football.

Tipperary

Commiserations to Grace O’Brien and the Tipperary senior camogie side who were unfortunately defeated by Cork in the Munster final on Saturday in Leahy Park, Cashel. Grace was introduced as a second half substitute and made a big impact scoring two points but it wasn’t enough to save Tipperary. 

Next weekend the senior hurlers travel to Cusack Park, Ennis to play Clare in the next round of the Munster championship and we send Jake Morris, Barry Heffernan and all involved our best wishes.

The Blues 10km Run

The clubs annual 10km run, in associate with the HSE, will take place on Sunday, 23rd June from MacDonagh Park. This is a wonderful community event and there’s still plenty of time to begin training. Here is a handy link to those of you brave enough to begin the challenge: 10k in four weeks

On a sad weekend for the club with the passing of our former chairman, here are this week’s notes

The Late Jerry Quinlan

All of us in the club were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jerry Quinlan over the weekend. Jerry was a true and proud Nenagh Éire Óg man who helped the club in many ways over the years.

Jerry won a Munster minor medal with Tipperary in 1962 when they defeated Cork, 4-11 to 4-1, in Limerick. Unfortunately they came unstuck against Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final. He added a Munster under-21 medal to his collection when Tipperary beat Galway in the Munster final but once more they suffered defeat in the All-Ireland final, this time to Wexford. 

He hurled Harty Cup with St. Flannan’s and Fitzgibbon Cup with UCD while winning a senior North Tipperary medal in 1964 when we beat Roscrea. He was the club representative to the North Board while he also held all the officers positions in the club. He managed the Nenagh team that won the county junior title in 1983 and served as an intermediate selector with Tipperary the following year.

The club will hold a guard of honour after his funeral mass on Tuesday at 12 noon and all club members are invited to attend. 

His remains will be reposing at his home on Monday 20th from 4pm until 8pm. Funeral arriving on Tuesday to St. Mary of the Rosary Church, Nenagh, for Requiem Mass at 12 noon followed by burial in Lisboney Cemetery.

To his family and friends we offer our sincerest condolences.

Junior-A Hurling

Our junior-A hurlers defeated Templederry on Friday evening in the league semi-final 2-24 to 1-13. Shane Maher scored our first goal while Mark Tuite got the second from a penalty following a foul on Craig Hilmi. We now play Toomevara in Kilcoleman on Sunday May 26th at 19:00 in the final. Best of luck to all concerned.

Junior Football

Our junior footballers travelled to Kilcommon to play Seán Treacy’s on Saturday evening in the final game of the round robin series of the Tipperary Water county league and were fierce unlucky to lose by one point, 1-8 to 0-12. Lenny Ryan blasted home a brilliant first-half goal and the team worked their socks off right to the final whistle and deserve huge credit for the improvements they continue to show. 

Minor Hurling

Our minors were defeated 7-17 to 0-10 by Borrisokane in their final match of the North Tipperary minor hurling league on Wednesday evening last.

Under-14

The team of the weekend are undoubtably our under-14 footballers who came out on top in a titanic battle with a brilliant Ballina side in the North Tipperary final in Kilcoleman on Saturday afternoon. Just when the game appeared to be heading for extra time Sam O’Farrell showed maturity and composure beyond his years to kick over the winning point which sparked wild scenes of celebrations among the Blues contingent. At half time we led 2-5 to 0-3 and it appeared as if this was going to be an easy afternoon for Nenagh but Ballina, to their credit, never gave up and took the game by the scruff of the neck and fought back time and again until they got the levelling score as we entered injury time. Our thanks go to referee Garrett Howard for facilitating such an exciting game of football and to North Bórd Chairman, Joe McCarthy, for the presentation and fine speech. Best of luck lads in the county stages. Éire Óg Abú!

All The President’s Men

The first of our President’s Trophy hurling tournaments to honour club presidents Jimmy Morris, Ger Gavin, Michael Hynes and Michael Burns was held last night when our under-12 boys welcomed two Dúrlas Óg teams to MacDonagh Park. Michael Burns wasn’t available but will preside over a later tournament. It was a wonderful evening of sport that will long be remembered. Ger, Jimmy and Mick did the honours and made presentations to the winning captains. Dúrlas Óg took the honours in the first match while the second match, played at ferocious pace and skill level for such young boys ended in a draw. They also shared the wisdom of their experience and made inspirational speeches to the young men. Many thanks all of our young hurlers, to Dúrlas Óg who were wonderful guests, referee Christy McLoughlin who also made a presentation to the Presidents and the parents who catered for all in the hall afterwards. The biggest ‘thank you’ however must go to Ger Gavin, Jimmy Morris, Mick Hynes and Mick Burns, four outstanding club men, who have dedicated such a huge part of their lives to Nenagh Éire Óg and continue to do so. Heartfelt thanks from Nenagh Éire Óg Juvenile Club.

Under-8

Our under-8 boys travelled to Newport on Saturday morning to play hurling and Gaelic football. They played two games each against teams from Newport, Ballina and Na Piarsaigh. We had three teams and they played really well. Congratulations also to all the families who celebrated communion today in the CBS. Training continues as usual for Gaelic football on Tuesday at 6pm and hurling Wednesday at 5.30pm. There will be another blitz next week run by Tipperary Games & Development in a North Tipperary venue for the boys.

Tipperary

Congratulations go to Barry Heffernan, Jake Morris and the Tipperary senior hurlers who defeated Waterford in the Munster championship 2-30 to 0-18. Both men came on as second-half substitutes and scored a point each. 

We also congratulate Eabha O’Brien and the Tipperary under-14 camógs who won the James Hurley Blitz in Mallow over the weekend. They defeated Galway, Cork, Wexford, Limerick and Galway again in the final. Ciara Morris was with the B squad but unfortunately they weren’t as successful. Well done ladies.

Junior Football

Our junior footballers were due to play Clerihan on Friday evening last in the second round of the Tipperary Water county league but unfortunately the South side had to concede the match. Our final round robin league fixture is this Friday, 17th May, at 19:30 in Kilcommon against Seán Treacy’s.

Minor Hurling

Our minors recorded a 3-10 to 1-15 win over Kiladangan in a highly entertaining game in Puckane on Wednesday evening last in the North Tipperary minor hurling league. Josh Keller and Seth Shayanewako (2) scored the Nenagh goals. Our next match is this Wednesday at 19:00 in MacDonagh Park against Borrisokane.

Darragh Gleeson

Congratulations go to Darragh Gleeson from Gaelscoil Aonach Urmhumhan who starred on the county primary schools’ team at half time of the Munster senior football quarter final between Tipperary and Limerick in Semple Stadium on Saturday last. Darragh had a fine game and scored a great fisted goal into the new stand side of the pitch.

The beautiful opening verse to Wexford’s hurling balled The Purple and Gold explores the relationship between a father and son as they watch their heroes play as the fathers regales the storied history of the county’s great hurlers of the past.

Sport is one thing that can cement the relationship between a parent and child and we hope to help you create wonderful memories that you both will cherish in the years ahead by offering all parents a hurley so that you can practice hurling and camogie in your spare time with your child. If you would like a hurley contact your child’s coach and we will take care of the rest.

We are also offering a lend of a hurley and helmet to any child who wants to try out hurling and camogie before committing to purchasing same. Again contact us through our social media channels or talk to any underage coach for further information.

Under-10

The under-10s had a great evening’s hurling on Friday as Limerick’s Ahane paid us a visit and played a number of games. 

Under-12

Well done to our under-12 A footballers who won their North final beating Inane Rovers in Templederry. Led by captains, Billy O Brien and Dylan McKenna, they played with great skill and determination from the throw in and this didn’t falter when faced with a fierce fight back by a mighty Inane team.

The lads travelled to Clonoulty on Thursday for the county semi-final where they played Arravale Rovers with the West lads emerging victorious by one-point after extra time. Our lads left everything on the field of play and did the North division proud with the skilful determination.

Under-14

Our under-14s are officially representing the county in the All-Ireland Féile Peile na nÓg in a few weeks and preparations have begun in earnest. We have launched the “Square Ball” fundraiser. Our main pitch in MacDonagh Park will be divided into squares each of which can be purchased for €10. Our senior hurlers and Féile players will, blindfolded, randomly kick footballs to decide the various winners. Best of luck to the lads.

Prior to the Féile they have the little matter of a North final after beating Newport during the week. This final is expected to take place on May 18.

Under-16

Our under-16 hurlers travel to Holycross this weekend for the John Ryan Tournament. 

Camogie News

Under-8 and Under-10

Any parents of girls who would like to try camogie can contact us through Facebook or Twitter for details. Our under-6 and under-8 teams train on a Thursday evening from 6pm until 7pm and our under-10 and under-12 teams train on Monday and Thursday evenings from 5.30pm until 6.30pm.

Portroe Blitz

The under-8s had two teams at a camogie blitz in Portroe on Saturday morning. It was a great morning’s hurling for the girls. They played really well and enjoyed it. Thanks to everyone who helped out.  Training on Thursday’s from 6pm to 7pm for the under-6s and under-8s. New faces are always welcome and the girls really enjoy the hour of activity outside on the pitch.

Tipperary

Congratulations to Jake Morris, Barry Heffernan and the Tipperary senior hurlers who beat Cork in the opening round of the Munster championship, 2-28 to 1-24. They face Waterford next Sunday in Semple Stadium. 

Congratulations also go to Grace O’Brien and the Tipperary camógs who defeated Waterford 2-23 to 1-8 in the Munster championship. Grace made a second-half appearance and scored a point.

Our senior hurlers defeat Killenaule in the county league, Sam O’Farrell wins the county Féile skills final while the under-10 camógs enjoy a wonderful blitz in Portroe. All this and more in this week’s news on the Blues

Our seniors recorded a 4-31 to 2-18 win over Killenaule in the county senior hurling league on Saturday evening in MacDonagh Park. Cian O’Farrell was on fire scoring three goals while Michael Heffernan got Éire Óg’s fourth from a 21 yard free. 

Junior Football

Best of luck to our junior footballers who play their second match in the Tipperary Water county league this Friday at 19:30 in MacDonagh Park against Clerihan.

On Thursday last the Tipperary panels for the upcoming Munster minor and senior campaigns were announced and we wish to congratulate Barry Heffernan and Jake Morris who are both part of Liam Sheedy’s senior set up while Paul McLoughlin is included in the minor panel. Congratulations lads, it is both an honour and privilege to wear the Blue & Gold. 

We also extend our best wishes to Conor McCarthy who lines out for the Tipperary under-20s in the Tom O’Hara tournament in Gortnahoe tomorrow at 7pm.

Tipperary Club Draw

What better way to help Nenagh Éire Óg build our new field and Tipperary win an All-Ireland than to win a new a car or a family holiday to Australia! We think that you deserve it! This week launches the 2019/20 Tipperary Clubs Draw and with the first one taking place in Borrisoleigh on May 10th, the drive is on to get new members. All new members, whether connected with the juvenile club or not, will be entered in to a draw for a signed Tipperary jersey, summer camp passes and spot prizes for children sponsored by the juvenile club.

Congratulations to Sam O’Farrell on his county final win in the county Féile skills final in Boherlahan last weekend. Sam now goes on to represent Tipperary in the All-Ireland finals. 

Under-10

Well done to our under-9 & under-10 boys who played their first competitive hurling matches with Murroe Boher on Saturday morning last. It was very competitive and great to see the boys using what we are doing at training with clashing, hooking, handpassing etc coming into play but also the tackling and fighting for the ball. Hurling Blitz next Friday evening v Ahane in Nenagh. Children need to be in field for 6pm sharp. Hurling Training on Wednesday as 5:15 as usual. U10 football commences Tuesday evening at 6pm.

Under-12

Our 12 C football team suffered defeat in their north semi final against Newport on Tuesday night. They were slow to get going, but put in one of the best performances of the year in the second half.

Membership

Membership is now due. All boys have received forms which should be returned to mentors. Non-members will not be eligible to train or play in matches. Contact 086 0855165 with any issues.

Camogie News

Our under-10 girls took part in the differed county blitz today in Portroe. Twenty-two girls took to the field and did really well in all games. With forty girls training regularly and the numbers growing every week it’s great to see the girls doing so well. If other girls wish to start up we train on a Monday and Thursday from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. There is no training this bank holiday Monday.

Under-12

The under-12s travelled to Moneygall for the final blitz with a somewhat depleted squad and came away with two good wins. Playing on a bigger pitch played to our strengths as it gave our older girls the space to play into and get their strikes away. We beat Moneygall in the first game with a great goal from Nikola Zarina. In the second game we beat Kiladangan thanks to a goal from Ella O’Brien and great defending from our girls and would have won by more only for two or three good saves by Kildangan. Thanks to Moneygall for hosting the games. That’s the last of the blitzes so League will start soon. Training Thursday at 5.30pm.

Camogie Fundraiser

The winner of the Come Dine With Me €100 raffle that ensured everyone that bought a ticket was entered into the draw took place at a recent committee meeting and first out of the hat was Maeve Hassett.

The Late Michael Cahill

The club would like to express its sympathies to the Cahill family, friends and Kilruane MacDonagh’s club following the recent passing of Michael Cahill. Michael was a top class referee who’s name players loved to see beside their club’s upcoming fixture. A popular figure in GAA circles, his contribution to his beloved Kilruane MacDonagh’s was immense as a player, supporter, referee, groundskeeper, delegate and club treasurer among many other roles. 

Matches in MacDonagh Park, Cloughjordan will seem different in future without his presence around the grounds performing some duty to ensure the game runs smoothly.

Thomas MacDonagh

Friday last marked the 103rd anniversary of the death of Thomas MacDonagh, after whom our grounds on St. Conlon’s Road are named after.

Congratulations Barry Coffey

Congratulations go to Barry Coffey and his Celtic team mates who won the City of Glasgow Cup with a 3-2 win over Rangers. As you can see in the footage below, celebrations were rather muted afterwards!!
