Jake Morris fires home his second goal against Toomevara

Our senior hurlers defeated Toomevara, 3-17 to 1-14, in the final group game of the championship, with Ben West (1) and Jake Morris (2) getting the goals and the win sees us qualify for the knock out stages as group runners up. We now play Clonoulty Rossmore in a preliminary quarter final on Sunday, 6th September, at 3:30pm.

Under-8 Boys

Our Under-8 boys are gearing up for their next Go Games blitz on Saturday morning. There is great enthusiasm within this young group and plenty of progress is being made at training and in games.

Under-10 Boys

The Under-10 boys played Kilruane in Nenagh on Saturday morning, delivering a superb display of skill, teamwork and hard work. Well done to all the players involved and keep up the excellent effort.

Under-12A Boys

The Under-12A boys continue to prepare for their upcoming Plate competition, with fixtures yet to be confirmed.

Under-12B Boys

Our Under-12B boys travelled to Puckaun last week to face Toomevara. Despite a truly gallant effort, they were narrowly edged out on the evening. This group has made remarkable progress throughout the season and the message from the coaches is to keep attending training and keep practising.

Congratulations to Harry, who was named last week’s Player of the Week.

Under-14A Boys

The Under-14A boys played an intense and much-anticipated clash with Silvermines in Dolla last week. Nenagh led well into the break but a single goal ultimately separated the sides, with Silvermines taking the win.

It was a fantastic battle for the supporters to enjoy and an excellent test for all the players. The knockout stages now await this group as they look forward to the next stage of the competition.

Under-14B Boys

The Under-14B boys faced Newport last week and now prepare to meet Ballina this Thursday in their next round-robin fixture. Best of luck to the team.

Under-16A Boys

The Under-16A boys will play Newport in the North Tipperary Hurling Championship A semi-final on Monday evening at 6.45pm in Puckane.

Best of luck to all the lads. All support would be greatly appreciated.

Family Fun Day

The club will host a Family Fun Day on Sunday, September 6th, from 10am to 1pm. We look forward to seeing all our Éire Óg children in their sky-blue colours enjoying what promises to be a fantastic community occasion.

Activities will include games, music, food and a bring-and-buy shop for pre-loved GAA gear. Keep an eye on the club’s social media channels for further updates.

Éire Ógres Nursery

Our new Éire Ógres Nursery has begun and takes place every Saturday morning from 10am to 10.45am. It is open to all boys and girls born in 2021 or 2022 who are not currently part of a club group.

Please spread the word and help us welcome new families to Éire Óg.

Our Under-6 girls have enjoyed another fantastic few weeks of fun, friendship and learning new skills. It has been great to see the girls’ confidence and skills improving each week.

A big thank you to our coaches and parents for their continued support. New players are always very welcome to come along and give camogie a try. Training continues next Saturday at 9.00am.

Under-10

The under-10 girls played Portroe and Burgess

Our Under-10 girls have enjoyed a great run of games recently. On Monday night, the girls played Portroe and Burgess, followed by another great game against Drom on Wednesday evening in Nenagh. The girls are back in action tomorrow, Monday, when they take on Borris-Ileigh.

These games provide fantastic opportunities for the girls to develop their skills, teamwork and confidence. Well done to all the girls for their brilliant effort and enthusiasm.

Under-12

The under-12 navy team in Coolmore Morris Park

Our Under-12 Navy and Blue teams did the club proud on Sunday in the league finals in Coolmore Morris Park, Thurles.

The Navy team played Mullinahone in their semi-final before facing Drom & Inch in the Gold Final. They gave an outstanding account of themselves in both games, winning their semi-final comprehensively before narrowly missing out on victory in the Gold Final. This group competed against some of the best teams in the county and should be extremely proud of their performances.

The Blue team played St Mary’s in their final and came out on the right side of the result. The Blue team have gone from strength to strength throughout the year, with their hard work, practice and consistency paying off.

Well done to all our Under-12 players for doing the club proud.

Our Under-13 girls travel to Craughwell in Galway on Saturday to play teams from a number of counties. Training for this group now takes place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with new and returning players always very welcome.

We wish all the girls starting secondary school this week the very best of luck.

Under-16

Ciara Nolan gathers possession before scoring a crucial goal against Burgess Duharra

Our Under-16 girls played Burgess-Duharra in the first round of the Under-16 Championship on Wednesday evening in Nenagh. Playing against a strong wind in the first half, the girls were just two points behind at half-time. The girls continued the second half with the same determination and finished strongly. Plenty of players got on the scoreboard as Nenagh Éire Óg secured a 7-10 to 4-10 victory. There were excellent performances all over the pitch.

Next up for the girls is Slieve Felim Rapparees in Drombane on Tuesday at 6.45pm. Best of luck to the team.

Social Hurling

The Other Crowd play Hurling in MacDonagh Park

There are nights in MacDonagh Park when the ordinary folk of this world might think they have witnessed nothing more than a game of Social ‘ground’ Hurling upon the Astro. But there are other nights when, if you have the eyes to see and the ears to hear, you might begin to suspect that there are things moving amongst us that are not entirely of this world. Last Wednesday was such a night.

For upon the enchanted Astro turf, beneath skies known to The Good People and within sight of the ancient lands of Tipperary, two rival bands of The Other Crowd came forth to settle an ancient score. On one side stood John Phelan, Ger Ryan and Eamon Moylan, proudly adorned in their sacred bibs. Opposing them were Martin Gleeson, Jamie Kennedy and Conor O’Donovan, who had come without bibs but with all the confidence of men who had perhaps been whispering to the Púca before sunset.

The battle was to be fought over four periods of ten minutes and from the very beginning it was clear that there would be little mercy shown between these rival tribes of The Otherworld.

At the end of the first quarter, the non-bibs had stolen away with a 4-2 lead. Jamie Kennedy had already announced himself as a creature of considerable enchantment, finding the net three times and performing cartwheels in celebration, a display that caused some to wonder whether he had been drinking from the same mysterious well as the Leprechauns of old. Conor O’Donovan added another, while Ger Ryan and Eamon Moylan replied for the bibs.

The second quarter brought no relief for the men in bibs. Martin Gleeson, who appeared to have made some secret bargain with The Good People before entering the field, struck three times to the net and brought his personal tally to three. Ger Ryan and John Phelan answered for the bibs but when the mysterious lights of The Otherworld flickered across the Astro, the scoreboard showed 7-5 to the non-bibs.

Then came the third quarter and here the ancient powers seemed to turn decisively against the bibs.

For ten long minutes they could find no answer and not a single ball crossed the non-bibs’ goal line. Martin Gleeson and Jamie Kennedy each found the net twice, while Conor O’Donovan added another when he disappeared past John Phelan as though he had stepped through a fairy rath itself.

Indeed, Conor’s goal was preceded by a nutmeg of such delicacy that even the watching Portroe and Moneygall folk, departing the inner pitch after their own contest, were drawn to pause and witness the deed. Some claimed afterwards that Conor had merely slipped through John’s legs. Others, who know the ways of The Other Crowd, were convinced that John had been briefly spirited away into The Otherworld.

By now the non-bibs had stretched their advantage to seven goals and the outlook for the bibs was darker than a moonless night beside an abandoned fairy fort.

Yet the final quarter was not without its wonders.

First came John Phelan, who, as Jamie Kennedy prepared to unleash a thunderbolt towards the net, produced a hook tackle of such precision that Jamie swung at nothing but the evening air. Had one been standing nearby, one might almost have heard the laughter of The Good People.

Then, not long afterwards, Ger Ryan gathered his courage and set off upon a journey across the entire length of the Astro. With Conor O’Donovan in hot pursuit, Ger ran as though pursued by every mischievous Púca from the Galtee Mountains to the Slieve Felims. But no fairy trick could catch him. With remarkable calm, he reached the other end and coolly buried the ball in the net, bringing the night’s scoring to its final total of 16-7.

Martin Gleeson emerged as the great goal-getter of the evening, finishing with seven goals, while Ger Ryan led the charge for the bibs with four.

Jamie Kennedy, however, must be awarded the crown for the finest display of fairy gymnastics, his cartwheels being of such quality that there was talk afterwards that the Fairy Queen herself might be considering him for a place in her travelling troupe.

And yet perhaps the most remarkable deed of the evening belonged to Eamon Moylan. Standing between the sticks, Eamon produced a goalkeeping performance worthy of the finest guardian of a fairy fort, saving penalties from each of his three non-bibbed opponents. Three penalties, three saves — enough to have The Good People muttering amongst themselves about ancient enchantments.

And so the Astro fell silent once more, the hurlers of The Other Crowd disappeared into the darkness and the ordinary world returned to MacDonagh Park.

But should you happen to pass the Astro next Wednesday at 8.15pm, keep your eyes open. For The Other Crowd may once again emerge from their hidden places, hurleys in hand, ready to settle another ancient score beneath the watchful gaze of the moon.
