Éire Óg’s north Tipperary junior B hurling league campaign came to a disappointing end in Borrisokane on Thursday evening when the home side won with five goals to spare.
Borrisokane, who needed a win to force their way into the semi-finals, started well and led 1-2 to no-score before Éire Óg got off the mark thanks to a Kieran Duffy free in the 13th minute. A second Borrisokane goal in the 23rd minute helped the home side into a 2-6 to 0-5 interval lead.
Borrisokane began the second half in positive fashion and hit Éire Óg with a third goal before Aidan Healy managed the first of his four second half points. Éire Óg scored a goal of their own when Kieran Duffy buried a free from 23 yards in the 50th minute. Unfortunately Borrisokane added two further goals to their tally.
In the up-coming junior B hurling championship Éire Óg have been drawn in a group featuring Newport, Ballinahinch, Ballina and Portroe with the top two qualifying for the semi-finals.

SENIOR
Senior: Last Thursday night the draw took place for the first round of the county senior hurling championship. Éire Óg have been drawn against Thurles Sarsfields with the game scheduled to take place on June 15th-16th. On Sunday afternoon last we defeated Kilruane MacDonagh’s in the Dr Fogarty Cup semi-final (County Senior Hurling Challenge Cup) – 2-22 to 2-17 in Cloughjordan. Éire Óg now face Burgess in the final – in their respective semi-final Burgess beat Clonoulty-Rossmore 2-17 to 1-11.
Junior A: On Saturday evening last our junior A hurlers defeated Roscrea in the last group game of the league. The final score was: Éire Óg 2-25 Roscrea 0-16. This win has qualified Éire Óg for the knock-out stages of the league. Éire Óg face Burgess in the junior A league semi-final in Cloughjordan on Saturday, June 8th (7pm).
Junior B: Our junior B team conclude their league campaign this Thursday evening when they take on Borrisokane. This game takes place in Borrisokane at 7.30pm.
Inter-county: Best wishes to Michael Heffernan and the Tipperary panel against Limerick on Sunday in the Gaelic Grounds.
County Board Draw: Congratulations to Deirdre Lowney on winning a car in the first draw on Friday night last which took place in Templemore. Thanks to all the promoters and supporters of this year’s County Board Draw.

Under-10 & Community Games: Our Community Games team lost out to Roscrea on Wednesday last in the North-Mid final in Nenagh. Well done to these lovely young hurlers for getting this far in the competition and good luck to Roscrea as they progress.
Under-12 Go Games: Our group one hurlers got their campaign off to a start with a victory over Borrisokane on Friday last. In an exciting game Dylan Murphy made a number of excellent saves in goal while Barry Coffey & Cian Griffin got the Éire Óg goals. Our group four team came from behind to snatch a late draw in the first round game against Templederry. There were fine performances from Cameron Spillane & Cian Galvin while Dylan Noonan-Kelly & Adam Ryan scored the two goals. Both teams were due to play Silvermines in the next round on Bank Holiday Monday.
Under-14 Football: Our under-14s won the North Tipperary football title on Monday, May 27th. The team was led by captain Peter Folan and recorded a 3-8 to 1-2 victory over Borrisokane. Congratulations to Peter and the team on a fantastic victory. On Saturday last the team contested the county semi-final against Galtee Rovers which they narrowly lost on a scoreline of 5-5 to 4-5. The team showed great fight and determination to claw back a seven-point deficit at half time. Jake Morris struck three goals in the second half and the score was level with five minutes to go. Unfortunately the team couldn’t get ahead and suffered a narrow defeat following a brave performance. Attention now turns to the hurling championship and full attendance is required at training on Monday and Fridays. A challenge match will take place against Patrickswell on Wednesday. Full attendance required.
Under-16: Preparations are underway for the hurling championship. Full attendance at all training sessions is required.
Guess the Score: The juvenile club are running a ‘Guess the Score’ competition for the Tipperary v Limerick match which the boys are selling at €2 a line. Please support the players.
Congratulations: Congratulations to Éire Óg’s Barry Coffey who has been selected to play in the Primary Game against Limerick at Páirc na nGael on Sunday, June 9th.

Community Games: Congratulations to our Community Games team who won the North final last week defeating an excellent Burgess team by seven points.
Junior: Our juniors played Newport on Monday in the opening round of the Munster League. Check Facebook for the result of this fixture. Éire Óg are also due to play Burgess, Valley Rovers (Cork) and Wolfe Tones (Clare).
Civic Reception: On Friday last Nenagh Town Council recognised the club’s achievements last year and awarded us a civic reception where we were presented with a framed certificate. We wish to thank the council for their kindness and the wonderful refreshments provided on the night.
Come Dine With Me: On Friday last over one hundred people attended our ‘Come Dine With Me’ fundraiser in the Hibernian Inn with celebratory guest on the night being former Munster, Leinster and Irish rugby player Trevor Hogan. We wish to thank everyone who helped out on the night including DJ Mickey Mac, the staff of the Hibernian Inn and Trevor Hogan for so generously volunteering his time.

County Senior Hurling Challenge Cup

Nenagh Éire Óg 2-22 Kilruane MacDonagh’s 2-17
Nenagh Éire Óg enjoyed a five-point win over Kilruane MacDonagh’s at a sunny Cloughjordan on Sunday afternoon – Éire Óg will now face Burgess in the Dr Fogarty Cup final at a time, date and venue to be confirmed.
Éire Óg started well and led 0-4 to 0-1 after eight minutes with Tommy Heffernan (two), Donnacha Quinn (free) and Paddy Murphy responsible for these early efforts.
Mark O’Leary and Kieran Cahill responded for Kilruane and when Niall O’Meara cracked over a superb point in the 12th minute there was just the minimum between them – 0-5 to 0-4.
Éire Óg responded to the challenge with a third Tommy Heffernan point and a terrific Paddy Murphy goal – Murphy played a slick one-two with Killian Gleeson before finishing off his left in the 15th minute (1-6 to 0-4).
Killian Gleeson then added to the Éire Óg tally before Thomas Cleary plundered a great goal for Kilruane in the 18th minute.
It was tit-for-tat thereafter until a Donnacha Quinn free in the 25th minute helped Éire Óg into a 1-10 to 1-7 lead. Just then, however, Kilruane sparked into life with three consecutive points (Mark O’Leary and a Michael Costello brace) levelling matters.
All of Kilruane’s good work was undone however in the 28th minute when Paddy Murphy buried a second goal. James Mackey then added an Éire Óg point and Nenagh led 2-11 to 1-10 at the break.
Mark O’Leary opened the scoring for Kilruane in the second half, but Éire Óg responded with points from Killian Gleeson (two) and Barry Heffernan (two frees) to take a 2-15 to 1-11 lead.
To their credit Kilruane fought back with a second Thomas Cleary goal. The MacDonagh’s added two further points and with 19 minutes to play there was just two between them (2-15 to 2-13).
A tough battled ensued. Indeed, with eight minutes to play Kilruane were still within striking distance (2-16 to 2-18). Éire Óg, however, finished strongly with a late surge of points from Tommy Heffernan, Michael Heffernan, Andrew Coffey and Killian Gleeson ensuring that the Blues progressed.

North Tipperary Junior A Hurling League
Nenagh Éire Óg 2-25 Roscrea 0-16
Following a disappointing defeat suffered at the hands of Knockshegowna in the last round Éire Óg returned to winning ways on Saturday evening in Roscrea when the Blues enjoyed a fifteen-point win over the home side.
Éire Óg played with the wind in the opening half and led 0-4 to 0-2 thanks to four Davy Hackett efforts before Bob O’Brien won a Pearse Morris delivery in the 19th minute and beat the Roscrea ‘keeper with a classy finish.
The Blues added points thanks to the efforts of Gary Howard and Darragh Walsh before Bob O’Brien hit the post with a rasping effort.
Roscrea fought back and trailed 0-8 to 1-7, but Éire Óg closed out the half impressively with points from Brian Maxwell, Bob O’Brien and Brian Quinn to lead 1-10 to 0-8 at the interval.
Éire Óg had registered ten first half wides, but the lads’ performance improved significantly in the second half with efforts from David Hackett, Brian Maxwell, Donnacha Quinn (two) and Brian Quinn firing the Blues into a 1-15 to 0-8 lead.
Roscrea responded with two points of their own, but Éire Óg were moving well with David Hackett (two frees), Darragh Walsh and Bob O’Brien (two) adding to the Blues’ tally – 1-20 to 0-10.
Roscrea rallied with five late points to cut the deficit significantly, but Éire Óg proved too strong for their hosts on this occasion with efforts from James Mackey (two), Brian Maxwell, Alan Kelly, Bob O’Brien and a Philip Hickey goal in the 58th minute propelling the Blues into the knock-out stages of this year’s junior A hurling league.

Our senior hurlers were defeated in the quarter-final of the Hibernian Inn-sponsored north championship by Toomevara on Sunday evening last in Dolla (1-13 to 2-18). See website for match report.The Blues now look forward to the first round of the county championship – how Éire Óg progress in the county series will have implications for 2014 so it is vitally important that the efforts of the lads are supported. The sixteen club teams who fail to make their divisional semi-finals will feature in the first round of the county hurling championship.
The eight losers of this first round will enter the Ó Riain Cup (which has relegation attached) while the eight winners from round one of the county championship play-off with the eight losing divisional semi-finalists. Critically, the winners of this round will be guaranteed a place in the top-tier of the 2014 county senior hurling championship. Those eight winners will join the eight divisional finalists to make up the top-sixteen who will play out for the Dan Breen in 2014.
Meanwhile Éire Óg are scheduled to face Kilruane MacDonagh’s next Sunday, June 2nd in the County Senior Hurling Challenge Cup. The game is provisionally fixed for 1.30pm in Cloughjordan, but please keep an eye on Twitter, Facebook and the club website for confirmation of the throw-in time.

Group three league matches begin on Friday, June 7th.
Under-14: Congratulations to our football team who won the North Tipperary under-14A football final on Monday evening at Kilcolman. In the decider Éire Óg beat Borrisokane 3-8 to 1-2. Well done lads!
Congratulations to Jake Morris, Peter Folan, Mark O’Farrell and Conor Bonnar and the North Tipperary under-14 team on winning the Plate final in the Peadar Cummins Tournament in Borrisoleigh last Saturday.
Under-16: The under-16 panel and management would like to sincerely thank former Munster, Leinster and Ireland rugby player Trevor Hogan for the inspirational talk he gave to them last Wednesday evening. Fellow Nenagh man Hogan shared the life lessons he learned through his participation in sport and his encouragement was much appreciated by all.

Under-12: Our under-12s qualified for the county final after a great win over Ballina on a scoreline of 1-4 to 1-2 with Lucy Spain getting four points and Maeve Hassett getting the goal.
Under-14: Our under-14s defeated Kilruane in the Community Games semi-final on Friday last in Nenagh. The girls will face Burgess on Tuesday in the final.
Our under-14s were defeated by Drom & Inch in the county final last Wednesday in the Ragg on a scoreline of 3-4 to 2-4. It’s a great achievement getting to two county finals in-a-row and shows the dramatic progress Camogie has made in the parish in recent years. Thanks to the great panel of players and their mentors and we wish them well in the Féile na nGael finals next July.
Junior: Our junior team have entered the Munster junior A league this year and are due to play the opening game on June 7. We have been drawn against Burgess, Newport and Clarecastle.
Civic Reception: There will be a civic reception Friday, May 31st in the Civic Offices on the Limerick Road at 6.30pm. This is to honour all our teams who won competitions last year. All players, members, families, supporters and mentors are invited to attend.
Féile na nGael: On May 31st in the Hibernian Inn the club are hosting a ‘Come Dine With Me’ fundraiser to help secure funds for our Féile na nGael team who have qualified for the All-Ireland finals for the very first time. Celebrity chef for the event is former Munster and Irish rugby player Trevor Hogan. Tickets are priced at €32 for two or €20 for one and are available from any committee member. The team are also seeking sponsorship from businesses and private individuals. If you are interested in supporting the team please contact any committee member.
Exams: Best wishes to all our players and supporters who are sitting college exams and those who are preparing to sit the Junior and Leaving Certificate. We look forward to seeing you all back on the field once the exams are over. Players who haven’t made an appearance yet this year are always welcome to return at any stage.

Éire Óg suffered an eight-point defeat to Toomevara at Dolla in a one-sided Hibernian Inn north Tipperary senior hurling championship quarter-final.
Prior to this afternoon Éire Óg were undefeated, but Toomevara proved too strong on this occasion for the Blues.
Toome started well and led 1-2 to no-score before Éire Óg got off the mark thanks to a long-range Barry Heffernan free. A Kevin Tucker free and then a super Michael Heffernan point dragged Éire Óg to within two points of Toome.
Éire Óg then took the lead thanks to a Killian Gleeson goal – Gleeson did especially well to dispossess his marker before belting home a great shot – 1-3 to 1-2.
Following a Kevin Tucker point in the 25th minute Éire Óg led 1-6 to 1-5, but Toomevara closed out the opening half brilliantly and led 1-9 to 1-7 at the break.
Toomevara had played into the breeze in the opening half and immediately after the break Toome hit 1-3 without reply to lead 2-12 to 1-7 before Éire Óg managed a response through Michael Heffernan in the 37th minute.
To their credit the Éire Óg lads battled right to the very end.
We thank the players and the management team led by Liam Heffernan for the terrific effort made this year.

As you are aware Nenagh Éire Óg has been nominated as one of sixteen clubs across the four provinces of Ireland to participate in the national GAA Healthy Club Project. There are five clubs involed in Munster and Éire Óg are the only club in Tipperary to participate in this innovative project.
This is an exciting new project aimed at enriching the lives of club members and players while further strengthening each club’s ties to their local community.
Over the next number of months the club will be undertaking a number of initiatives in putting health, well-being and building community at the heart of everything we do.
The launch of our project will be taking place on Monday, May 20th (7.30pm) and phase one of the project involves completing an online questionnaire.
We are asking club members, supporters and the wider community to fill out the questionnaire in order to help and guide us over the next number of months to ensure that our healthy club project is a success.

Nenagh Éire Óg 1-7 Newport 0-11
Despite a late surge Éire Óg came up just short against Newport in a hard-fought junior B hurling league clash at MacDonagh Park, Nenagh on Monday evening.
Kieran Duffy opened the scoring for Éire Óg and although Newport struck back with two points a Gary Howard effort levelled it up in the 11th minute. The opening half featured four more Newport points, but Éire Óg responded with fine points from Ger O’Gorman, Kieran Duffy (free) and Gary Howard. Half-time: Nenagh Éire Óg 0-5 Newport 0-6.
Newport started the second half in very positive fashion. The sides traded points initially before Newport hit four points without reply to lead 0-11 to 0-6 by the 50th minute.
Éire Óg were far from finished however. In the 53rd minute Gary Howard cracked home a 21-yard free. The Blues followed up Howard’s goal with two wides and piled on the pressure in the closing minutes. A Jack Sheedy point on the hour mark left just one between them. Éire Óg then fired yet another wide before an Aodhán Geaney ’65 dropped agonisingly short and was cleared away.
Éire Óg’s final game in the group phase of the junior B hurling league is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 2nd in Borrisokane against Borrisokane at 12 noon.
