Nenagh Éire Óg 2-19 Borris-Ileigh 1-11
Nenagh Éire Óg recovered from falling 0-1 to 0-5 behind during the opening nine minutes of this encounter to beat a Borris-Ileigh side who worked incredibly hard throughout this contest. Indeed, the Borris-Ileigh lads were a credit to their club.
Éire Óg struggled to find their feet early on and trailed by four points before hitting 1-7 without reply to lead 1-8 to 0-5 at the break. The vital goal arrived in the 14th minute when Christopher Ryan diverted a Gary Howard delivery to the Borris-Ileigh net to hand the Blues a 1-3 to 0-5 lead.
Three Borris-Ileigh points in the opening eight minutes of the second half reduced the deficit to three points, but Éire Óg out-scored Borris-Ileigh by five to one to lead 1-13 to 0-9 by the 52nd minute. In the 36th minute Borris-Ileigh had seen a penalty saved by Brian Gubbins, but Borris were not to be denied a goal in the 53rd minute which left four between them – 1-13 to 1-9.
Éire Óg responded to the challenge with two points before Anthony Walsh set up James Mackey for a second Nenagh goal in the 57th minute. Borris-Ileigh converted two late frees, but the Blues surged toward the final whistle in impressive fashion.
In other news the Éire Óg under-14A hurlers drew with Kilruane MacDonagh’s in Cloughjordan this evening – final score: Nenagh Éire Óg 2-5 Kilruane MacDonagh’s 2-5.
