The draws for the leagues have taken place, Eamonn Spillane coaches even more handball champions while the Tipperary senior hurlers are on their way to MacDonagh Park. All this and more in this week’s news on the Blues

Senior Hurling

In county league we have been drawn in Division 1 Group 2 alongside Kilruane MacDonagh’s, Upperchurch Drombane, Moycarkey Borris, Kiladangan, Lorrha and Dorrha, Thurles Sarsfields and Portroe. 

The first round of the county hurling league is expected to take place on the weekend of March 8th with the second round on the weekend of March 15th. 

Junior-A Hurling

In the North Tipperary league we will play Kilruane MacDonagh’s, Toomevara and Roscrea.

 

 

Junior-B Hurling

In the North Tipperary hurling league we will play Silvermines, Lorrha and Dorrha, Portroe, Burgess and Shannon Rovers. 

 

 

 

Junior-B Football

The draws have taken place for the junior-B county football league and championship. In the county league we are in Division 3 Group 1 alongside Loughmore Castleiney, Mullinahone, Emly and Solohead.

In the county junior-B championship we are in group 1 alongside Clonmel Óg, Rosegreen and Éire Óg Annacarty. 

Minor-B Football

Our minor footballers were supposed to play Borrisokane on Sunday in the North Tipperary championship but unfortunately, due to the inclement weather, the game was postponed. The lads are now due to play Templederry, on Sunday morning at 11:45am in MacDonagh Park.

Tipperary

The Tipperary senior hurlers’ game against Galway this weekend was cancelled due to the inclement weather. Next Sunday will be a special day for the club as Tipperary will play Westmeath in the Allianz League in MacDonagh Park. Anyone interested in volunteering on the day is asked to contact Enda Costello. 

Handball

Well done to Shane Gleeson and Tom Boland who won the under-12 Tipperary Handball Development tournament in Cashel on Saturday beating Carrick-on-Suir Handball Club in the final on a scoreline of 17 :14.

Juvenile News

Éire Ógres

The ever-popular Éire Ógres GAA camp for beginners returns for four Saturdays beginning February 29th. Open to boys born 2014/2015, it is the perfect way to introduce your child to sport in a happy, safe environment. No hurleys or helmets required, the focus will be on hand-eye coordination, fundamental movement and agility while the boys think they’re only having fun! Free tea/coffee/scones for parents and siblings so don’t rush the breakfast. Cost is €10 for the month and all will be awarded with a training T-shirt on the final morning. Membership

Membership is now due. We will hold a registration morning on Saturday 29th Feb in the complex from 10-11 am. Forms are also with mentors and may be returned to them at training. It remains €30 for the year with family options available.

Under-8

Training this Saturday had to be cancelled due to Storm Dennis. Training will continue next Saturday at 11am in Nenagh College. New players are always welcome.

Under-10

Training continues every Saturday morning at 10am at the hurling wall in Nenagh College. Please encourage the boys to get out practising as much as possible during the midterm break. New players are welcome any week.

Well done to all of those who have remained committed the Get Fit for 2020 challenge as we enter week five. Any member is still welcome to come and join us for the circuits on Tuesdays and running on Thursdays. If the pitch is too wet we can go on the paths on the lit up parts of the town.

Hard luck to Hazel McAuliffe and her UCC teammates who lost out to UL in the Ashbourne Cup final.  Congratulations to Nenagh Éire Óg’s Mike Ryan who officiated the final.

Éire Ógres are back!

Watch out as the Éire Ogres are back in town at the end of the month and they plan to take over the Éire Óg complex. Sign up your boys and girls and introduce them to our great club. An hour of activities, skills, fitness and fun from 9.45 for the boys (born in 2014 & 2015) and 10.45 for the girls (aged 5,6 & 7) every Saturday for four weeks starting on the 29th of February. Parents can come along for a cup of tea or coffee and meet other parents while your children have a great morning.  €10 in total for the four weeks and a free t-shirt for all the little participants on the final day.

The Fr. Alec Reid tournament is a massive success, the Éire Ógres are back and a chance to become a referee. All this and more in this week’s news on the Blues

Fr. Alec Reid Tournament

Tipperary drew with Antrim in Belfast on Saturday in the Fr. Alec Reid tournament held at Davitts GAA Club on the Falls Road, Belfast to celebrate the opening of their fantastic new pitch. The Davitts club was founded in 1912 but never had their own playing field until this impressive new facility was built. Fr. Alec played hurling and Gaelic football with Nenagh and won an All-Ireland hurling minor title in 1949 with Tipperary before joining the Redemptorist order. Fr. Alec was an instrumental in bringing about peace to Northern Ireland. 

The referee, Colum Canning, symbolically throw in the Nenagh Éire Óg sliothar before giving it to the Davitts club who will now put it on permanent display in their clubhouse.

2020 Challenge

The Get Fit 2020 Challenge has been a great success to date. Week four of ten continues with circuits on Tuesdays from 6pm-7pm with Shane Connolly overseeing the workout and running on the pitch on Thursdays from 6.30pm-7.30pm to get us on our way to a 5km run in March. The challenge is still open to anyone from Nenagh Éire Óg to join up, parents, players (under-12s upwards) mentors and newcomers will be most welcome.

Under-12

Our training times are Tuesday 6pm-7pm at Nenagh College and Thursday 6.30pm-7.30pm at Éire Óg pitch. New or returning girls are always welcome to join us – never too late to pick up a camogie stick!

Éire Ogres

The Éire Ogres returns on the 29th of February for all girls born in 2013 or 2014. It will take place for four Saturdays from the 29th at the club and will cost €10 per child with a free t-shirt for participants on the final Saturday morning. The girls session will run from 10.45-11.45 and promises to be a fun filled few weeks to introduce girls into Éire Óg Camogie club.

Condolences

Nenagh Éire Óg Camogie Club would like to express our deepest and most sincere condolences to the Quinn family on the untimely passing of Enda Quinn. Enda was the brother of Darragh Quinn who is currently a mentor with the under-8s in the club. Our thoughts are with Darragh and the extended Quinn family at this time.

Well done to our boys who represented North Tipp on Roger Ryan and Garda Cup teams over the weekend. Training continues at the usual times.

When Kevin met Leo

It is great to see young people politically engaged and take an interest in affairs that affect society as a whole. Recently Leo Varadkar was canvassing in Nenagh when he came across juvenile hurler, Kevin Liston, who questioned him about climate change. Check out the video below and well done Kevin.

The draws took place during the week for the 2020 FBD Insurance county senior hurling championship and we have been drawn in group two alongside Éire Óg Annacarty, Clonoulty Rossmore and Holycross Ballycahill. Details of these fixtures have not been confirmed yet.

Weekly Walks

Our club weekly walks take place every Tuesday and Thursday evening from MacDonagh Park at 7pm. All are welcome regardless of fitness levels or if you’re from the parish or not.

Official opening of the clubhouse, 30 October 1989

Last week we uploaded a booklet that was published in 1942 to celebrate the official opening of MacDonagh Park and following some very positive feedback we have decided to upload a copy of the programme that was produced to coincide with the official opening of our clubhouse in October 1989. That day Offaly, the reigning Leinster champions, played Tipperary, the reigning All-Ireland champions, in a challenge game that was attended by a large crowd. Tipperary won 2-15 to 0-11 with a young Michael Cleary bagging a personal tally of 0-5 while GAA president, John Dowling, officially opened the complex.

Get Fit for 2020

The Get Fit for 2020 Challenge got off to a great start last Tuesday at the Éire Óg Complex. The circuits session led by Shane Connolly on Tuesday was super and the running session led by Tom Boland on Thursday on the pitch suited all levels who signed up to the challenge.
This is a fantastic opportunity to get fit as we arrive into Spring – there is no pressure, it’s a friendly atmosphere and everyone sets their own goals. Not too late to join us as there are still nine weeks to go.

Official Opening September 1942

As the club works in earnest to prepare our new grounds in Streame we recently received this booklet from local historian, John Flannery, which was first published in September, 1942, to celebrate the official opening of MacDonagh Park. The booklet has now been uploaded and permanently published to the “About Us” section of our website and is free to download. Alternatively, you can download it from the following link:

Camogie News

Under-12

Under-12 training resumed this week with a great turnout. Our training times are Tuesday 6-7pm at Nenagh College and Thursday 6.30-7.30pm at the Eire Og pitch. A great showing also from the parents of the under-12s at the circuit and laps on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Under-10

The under-10 girls started back training on Saturday morning in Nenagh College astroturf at 9.00. Great numbers for the first day back. If any girl born in 2011/2012 would like to come along they are more the welcome to try it out.

Éire Ogres

The Éire Ogres will run in March this year and more information will be made available on this in the middle of February.

Registration

 A registration date will be announced in the coming weeks for players.

Seniors

Training starts this Thursday at 7.30pm in field and Sunday at 10am. New or past members welcome to join for the coming season. Congratulations to Rachel Maher and Maeve Coffey on winning with LIT v UL during the week in the Purcell Cup. They are now through the quarter finals of this competition and we wish them well.

Tipperary

Commiserations go to Jake Morris and the Tipperary senior hurlers who were defeated by Limerick, 2-14 to 0-18, in Semple Stadium on Saturday evening. Jake scored three points. The lads now face Cork in Páirc Uí Chaoimh next weekend.

Borris-Ileigh

All of us here in Nenagh Éire Óg wish to commiserate with Borris-Ileigh who were defeated by Ballyhale Shamrocks in the All-Ireland club final in Croke Park today. Borris-Ileigh have been fantastic representatives of the Premier county since they captured the Dan Breen Cup, sweeping all before them in their run to the final. Watching the game it was obvious that every player died with their boots on and left every ounce of energy they had on the Croke Park surface.

2020 Membership

Club membership for 2020 is now open with four great options to suit everyone’s needs. Membership entitles you to access to our facilities as well as voting rights at our AGM and cover under the GAA injury benefit fund.

All players are reminded that they will not be allowed play for or train with the club without paying their membership.

Operation Transformation

The 2020 Tipperary Sports Partnership Operation Transformation 5km walks will begin on Saturday, January 18th, from the Nenagh Éire Óg Complex. The walk starts at 11 am and everyone is welcome to take part. All participants must sign in on that morning prior to walk. To kick start our new year in the club our Juvenile teams will lead the walk with their management teams.

Light Up Your Club Walk

Our mid-week walks continues on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from MacDonagh Park and they commence at 7pm. New walkers are welcome to join on both evenings or just one evening a week. All levels of fitness are catered for and you can walk at your own pace. Just sign in on the evening of your choice from 6.50pm with the walk beginning at 7pm. Why not bring a friend along and chat throughout your walk?

Third Level 

We have a number of players involved with various colleges in the next few weeks and we wish them the very best of luck as they seek glory with their respective teams.

Commiserations to Nenagh Éire Óg’s Megan Grace, joint captain of St Mary’s Nenagh and her team mates who lost out to St. Mary’s Midleton in the Munster Senior B Camogie Final on Saturday in Puckane on a scoreline of 2-18 to 1-4.

Nenagh Handball Club

Nenagh Handball Club had a fantastic day on Saturday, winning a number of North Tipperary championships. 

Cassandra Jones was runner up in the under-14 singles, while Emmet Jones and partner Stephen McNamara captured the under-13 doubles. Billy O’Brien won the under-13 championship and Kevin Liston was runner up in the under-14 singles.

Barry Coffey

Congratulations to Barry Coffey who signed a new contract with soccer club Celtic FC that will keep him at the Scottish giants until the summer of 2022. 

In a statement Celtic FC commented that “Coffey’s hard work in Tommy McIntyre’s reserves last campaign saw him called up to the Scottish champions’ pre-season training camp in Austria and Switzerland in June. There, he played for the senior side for the first time against SC Pinkafeld.

In the weeks that followed, Coffey represented his country at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship, and is now determined to work hard to keep himself in Neil Lennon’s wider plans at club level.  

Speaking at Celtic Park, Coffey said: “I’m over the moon and it’s nice to finally get the new deal over the line. I’m delighted and it’s nice to celebrate the hard work over the last two years that’s led to this point. Now, I can’t wait to get to work and continue to prove my worth at this great club.

“At the start of the season, it was an unreal experience to be involved with the first team and to play a few games in Austria. And then I was away with Ireland U-19s at the Euros, which was another fantastic experience. Now, I’ll work as hard as I can at Celtic, and can hopefully catch the gaffer’s eye again.”
