The Nenagh Éire Óg minor A football team lost by nine points to an excellent Newport Gaels outfit at MacDonagh Park, Nenagh on Wednesday evening. That said the Nenagh management team led by John Manley were delighted with the Blues’ hard-working display.

Football Championship
Nenagh Éire Óg 0-7
Newport Gaels 2-10
Playing with the wind in the opening half Éire Óg raced into a 0-3 to no-score lead inside the opening eight minutes thanks to efforts from Craig Himli, Jake Morris and Conor McCarthy.
Newport Gaels got off the mark thanks to a free in the tenth minute before Jake Morris created a goal-scoring opportunity for Adam Healy. Unfortunately Adam’s rasping shot flew narrowly wide.
An Adam Healy free and then an Alex Jones point helped the Blues into a 0-5 to 0-1 lead by the 25th minute. But credit must go to Newport Gaels who responded well to the challenge and scored three late first half points to leave just one between them at the break (0-5 to 0-4).
Éire Óg conceded a penalty in the opening minute of the second half, but ‘keeper Ian McNamara saved brilliantly before a Newport point in the 33rd minute tied the game at 0-5 apiece.
The Blues edged back into the lead thanks to a Niall McKeogh point in the 38th minute. A Newport Gaels free eight minutes later tied the game before the visitors struck for a vital goal in the 48th minute. The Gaels then added three points and with nine minutes to play the Blues found themselves trailing by six (0-6 to 1-9).
A second superb save from Ian McNamara brightened up the evening from an Éire Óg point of view in the 52nd minute before Newport landed their tenth point of the evening.
Aaron Hogan swung over a terrific Nenagh point in the 56th minute, but Newport enjoyed the final say in the matter when the Gaels crashed home a second goal in the 59th minute.
Nenagh Éire Óg will face Portroe in their remaining group two game while Kildangan, Inane Rovers and Ballina battle it out in group one for a place in the semi-finals.
