On a bright and sunny evening at MacDonagh Park, Nenagh Éire Óg scored a comprehensive victory over Drom & Inch in the under-16A championship.
County Under-16A Camogie Championship
Nenagh Éire Óg 2-14 Drom & Inch 2-01
The early exchanges suggested that there would be little to separate the sides, however, once Grace O’Brien opened her account in the eighth minute with a superb individual score the Blues never looked back.
O’Brien was on hand again three minutes later to double Nenagh’s lead after a great pass from Hazel McAuliffe. At this stage O’Brien was on fire and the inter-county under-16 star rattled the Drom net in the 12th minute after great work from Hazel Coffey.
The next point for Nenagh was the score of the match when McAuliffe brilliantly found O’Brien with an inch-perfect pass. Grace, in turn, drew the full-back before finding the unmarked Saoirse Whelan who coolly hand-passed the ball over the bar for a great point.
A minute later Whelan herself had the ball in the net for Nenagh’s second goal, just after Grace had added another point to her tally.
It wasn’t until the 23rd minute that the visitors got off the mark with a lovely point, but Grace O’Brien (2) and Laura Tierney were not about to let the Mid Tipperary outfit back into the game and scored some wonderful points to leave the interval score reading – Nenagh 2-8 Drom & Inch 0-1.
Drom came out all guns blazing in the second half quickly found the net with a kicked goal that left Sarah Quigley with no chance. However, O’Brien added two more points shortly after to settle whatever nerves Éire Óg had.
Drom got their last score of the game in the 46th minute with another great goal and at this stage the Nenagh defence, led by full-back Eimear Ryan, closed up shop and did not let their opponents in for any more scores. Maeve Coffey, Hazel Coffey and Grace O’Brien (2) finished out the half with four great points.
