North Tipperary Under-21A Hurling
Championship Quarter-Final
Nenagh Éire Óg 2-12 Roscrea 1-4
Éire Óg qualified for the semi-finals of the north Tipperary under-21A hurling championship thanks to an 11-point win over Roscrea in terrible conditions at Moneygall on Sunday afternoon – the Blues now join Kildangan, Burgess and defending champions Kilruane MacDonagh’s in the last four.
Playing with the wind in the opening half Éire Óg started well and took the lead thanks to a Donnacha Quinn free before Bob O’Brien grabbed a Donnacha Quinn sideline ball in the third minute and beat the Roscrea ‘keeper with a left-handed effort – 1-1 to 0-0.
Éire Óg dominated the opening half and added six more points to lead 1-7 to no-score at half time – Donnacha Quinn (two frees), Bob O’Brien (three) and Andrew Coffey were responsible for these efforts. The Blues probably deserved to enjoy a more comfortable interval advantage, but Roscrea’s Daryl Ryan made a series of fine saves. Indeed, Daryl Ryan made three more outstanding interventions in the second half.
Roscrea’s Jack Ryan and Éire Óg’s David Hickey traded points during the opening two minutes of the second half before interval substitute Evan Fitzpatrick struck for a three-pointer which left seven between them (1-8 to 1-1) in the 34th minute.
An Ethan Flynn point cut Éire Óg’s lead to six points, but the Blues responded with three Donnacha Quinn frees to lead 1-11 to 1-2 with ten minutes to play.
Conor Bergin and Donnacha Quinn (free) then traded scores before Jack Ryan concluded the scoring from a Roscrea point of view.
In injury time Éire Óg struck for their second goal when Bob O’Brien worked the ball toward Andrew Coffey and Coffey, in turn, picked out the unmarked Tommy Heffernan who fired home a neat three-pointer.
