Our seniors and junior-As qualify for the county semi-finals while our under-15s end the season with a defeat to Ballina. All this and more in this week’s news on the Blues
Senior Hurling
In the battle of the Young Irelanders, our senior hurlers defeated Éire Óg Annacarty Donohill on Saturday afternoon in The Ragg in the FBD Insurance county quarter-final on a 4-15 to 1-8 scoreline. Nenagh got the perfect start when a Jake Morris effort was brilliantly blocked by Darragh Mooney but the Annacarty net-minder could do nothing to stop Conor Hennessy sticking the rebound home for the opening goal of the game inside the opening fifteen seconds. Morris himself got in on the goalscoring act with two of his own while Andrew Coffey added the fourth deep in the second half. We wish a speedy recovery to Shane Hennessy who were forced off early due to injury. We play Kiladangan in the county semi-final this Sunday at 1:45pm in Semple Stadium while Borris-Ileigh play Kilruane MacDonagh’s in the other semi-final at 3:30pm.

Our junior-A hurlers will play Skeheenarinky in the county quarter-final on Sunday in Cashel at 3pm. Best of luck to all involved.
Autism Friendly Town
Nenagh is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Birdhill and Clonakilty in becoming a designated autism-friendly town. The initiative was launched in the Abbey Court Hotel on Friday by Alan Kelly T.D. and autism documentary film-maker Nic Ryan Purcell. They were preaching to the converted in a room packed with a cross section of the town and region as diverse as the autism spectrum itself. As highlighted on the night, if only some of the possible changes necessary were made by businesses, sporting clubs and the Council, they would have a massive positive impact on not just the families on the spectrum but on families dealing with a wide range of issues including dementia and hearing loss. In other words, it will bring a lot of peace to the town. As a club with over 300 juvenile boys and girls, and who play host to numerous senior and county hurling, Gaelic football and camogie matches, Nenagh Éire Óg were well represented on the night are looking forward to engaging with the soon to be formed committee and making MacDonagh Park even more accessible. Well done to all involved and we at Nenagh Éire Óg look forward to the challenge.
Healthy Club Conference 2019
Our thanks goes to Bartley Ryan who attended the annual Healthy Club Conference in Croke Park recently. Our club has been to the fore in the Healthy Club Project since its inception and our thanks goes to Michael Geaney who did trojan work in this area in the past.

Also, a big thank you to parents who brought the boys to training and blitz’s and helped out at both in any way. It is very much appreciated by all. The club would like to add thanks to Cathal and the fantastic under-6 mentors who worked so hard all year to make a home for our youngest players and their families in MacDonagh Park. Greg Browne
Those of us of a certain vintage will remember Greg Browne as a teak-tough, no-nonsense yet stylish player in both Gaelic football and hurling. He brought those traits successfully into coaching winning numerous titles with the overwhelming majority of teams he has trained and improved the skills of those players he offered advise to.
Greg as it turns out isn’t a bad singer and songwriter either after composing the following song about our town. Click on the YouTube link below to have a listen and spot familiar places and characters in the footage from around the town.

The under-13 girls put on a great display in their first group game against Newport in Shallee last Friday evening. Unfortunately we came up against a stronger team on the night. Our next game is away to Roscrea next weekend, fixture TBC. Training continues on Thursday evening at 5.30pm.

The under-10 girls finished up Sunday with the county blitz in Borrisoleigh. We had three teams and played teams from Borris-leigh, Brian Boru’s, Sliabh Felim, Toomevara, Knockavilla, Cahir, Fethard and Mullinahone. The girls began training mid-January and worked hard throughout the year. Huge numbers took part in the Éire Óg summer camp and the Cúl Camp. The highlight of the year was the trip to Dublin to play St. Judes and to watch the All-Ireland camogie final. Numbers continually grew throughout the year with more new girls starting recently. Our thanks to all the parents and coaches of the girls for their hard work and dedication throughout the year.

Congratulations to Durlas Óg on winning the county under-16 final later in the day. Hopefully both sets of under-8s will have lots of big days ahead of them as well. Next week we play a Gaelic football blitz and the following week we have our final hurling blitz of the year against Sixmilebridge and Clarinbridge.

Under-14
Hard luck to this wonderful team of young hurlers who have had an outstanding year but lost out on Saturday to Dúrlas Óg, the better team on the day, in the under-14 A hurling county final. Playing with pride and passion, our boys left it all on the field and no club can ask for more. Thanks to our opposition, the referee, County Board officials and Knockavilla Kickhams for hosting the game. It was the attitude of the lads though, as they regrouped in the complex for dinner, that was most remarkable. In a room filled with their parents, siblings and club officers, they showed a resilience beyond their years. They were positive, great fun and already planning next year.
Thanks to Martin Morris and the Hi-B for providing the food, especially during Jimmy’s 90th birthday celebrations. Can’t have been simple! Once again, thanks to the fantastic parents of this group. They should never underestimate their role in the club. Under the guidance of their management team of Greg Browne, Shane Connolly, Michael McNamara, John Kennedy, Ronan Walshe and John McNamara, the boys have learned that their displays of teamwork, commitment and their desire to be the best that they can be for each other is what makes real winners. Thanks for that, men. It’s difficult to commiserate with a team that has won four North titles, one County title, a President’s Trophy and competed at National Féile, so we won’t. Well done in 2019 boys. Roll on 2020!

Legends Match in aid of Alzheimers Society of Ireland

Nenagh Éire Óg legends Michael Cleary, Declan O’Meara, Conor O’Donovan, Kevin Tucker and Eddie Tucker
The years were certainly rolled back in MacDonagh Park on Saturday last as the Tipperary legends dusted the cobwebs off their boots, hurleys and helmets and made a welcome return to action as they took on their Limerick counterparts in a charity game in aid of the Alzheimers Society of Ireland. A large crowd gathered and gasped in awe as Kevin Tucker demonstrated, once again, his amazing ability to hit the post from point-blank range as the Premier ran out 4-23 to 4-16 winners. Our thanks go to all the volunteers, players and match officials who made the day such a huge success and we wish the Alzheimers Society of Ireland the very best of luck in the future.

Middle Row: Tom Duffy, Steven Kenny, John Power, Frank McGrath, Johnny Leahy (capt), J J Hayes, Paddy O’Dwyer. Front Row: Paddy Power, Martin Kennedy, Paddy Leahy, Bill Ryan, Martin Flannigan.
We were recently informed of three omissions on our Roll of Honour and we are delighted to include Jack and Mick Darcy who won All-Ireland medals with Tipperary in 1925 when the Premier outclassed Galway 5-6 to 1-5. Indeed, Mick also won an All-Ireland with Dublin in 1924 when the capital defeated Galway 5-3 to 2-6. In the 1925 final the Irish Independent wrote that “Mick Darcy at midfield was an outstanding figure, his well-judged, lengthy pucks never failing to reach the Tipperary forwards. From a “70” he drew cheers by scoring a goal”.
In 2017 Ella Carey played in goals as Borrisokane Community College captured the under-16 Junior-C crown after defeating Abbey Community College 2-8 to 2-4. We are delighted to include all three players in our Roll of Honour and if there are any other omissions please do not hesitate to get in touch with us via our social media channels or email us at eireognenagh@gmail.com

The under-6s finish their season with a blitz next Saturday morning against Kiladangan in Puckane. Last training takes place this Thursday.
Under-12s & Under-10s
Our under-10s and under-12s travelled to St. Judes GAA in Templeogue on Sunday where they received a great welcome from our hosts. The under-12s showed great skill and spirit to come from a goal down at half-time to win by two points. It was a great way to finish the season. The under-10s played three matches each against their St. Judes counterparts and all Nenagh girls played excellent camogie.
The group travelled on to Croke Park for the All-Ireland camogie final where we watched a great contest between Galway and Kilkenny.
Thanks to all the parents who travelled on a long day. Days like these live long in the memory for young girls and are hugely important in keeping their appetite for camogie alive. A big thank you also to Mike Nerney and all the ladies in St. Judes who showed us such great hospitality. We’ll look forward to welcoming them to Nenagh in 2020.

Well done to our under-6s who had a great mornings hurling in Cloughjordan on Saturday. Three matches were played against Kilruane MacDonagh’s, Toomevara and Roscrea and the boys were fantastic! A big thanks to Kilruane MacDonagh’s who hosted us and for the fantastic hospitality afterwards. Training as usual on Saturday mornings at 10am and new players are always welcome to come along.
Work Begins on New Grounds

Work began on our new grounds in Streame during the week and everyone in the club are really excited about the ten-acre development and which we will have access to through Grey’s Lane at the scoreboard end of the inside pitch in MacDonagh Park.
With our juvenile and camogie sections growing exponentially in recent years the demands on our two playing fields has grown to an unsustainable level and the new grounds are a much needed acquisition to meet the modern-day demands of the club.
This work will lead to a development of one playing pitch and leave enough room for other developments which have yet to be decided upon.

Commiserations go to our junior-A hurlers who lost out to an excellent Toomevara side in a pulsating North Tipperary final in Templederry on Sunday last. Thanks to all who made this such a wonderful success.

Jake and Barry are All-Ireland champions, the junior-As gear up for the North final while Conor McCarthy and Jake Morris look to win the under-20 title. All this and more in this week’s news on the Blues
Tipperary
There’s no doubt that the weekend belongs to cousins Barry Heffernan and Jake Morris who captured Celtic Crosses for themselves as Tipperary defeated Kilkenny, 3-25 to 0-20, in the All-Ireland senior hurling final. Barry followed in the footsteps of his uncle John by starring in the full-back line and so impressive was his performance that he was nominated for the Sunday Game man of the match accolade. Indeed Barry was instrumental in John O’Dwyer’s goal as he played an impressive ball into space for Seamus Callanan to run onto. Jake was introduced as a 60th minute substitute and fired over an impressive point.
We also wish to commiserate with both Grace O’Brien and Sarah Quigley as the Tipperary senior and intermediate camógs lost their All-Ireland semi-final clashes at the weekend. Unfortunately Grace was ruled out of the game due to concussion and we wish her well in her recovery.
Best of luck to Conor McCarthy, Jake Morris and the Tipperary under-20 hurlers in their All-Ireland final clash with Cork next weekend.
Great vision by @TipperaryGAA to score this goal, converted by John O'Dwyer. pic.twitter.com/xDYkkC3Js6

Our under-8s, along with Dúrlas Óg, in the pre-match parade
Our under-8 boys welcomed Dúrlas Óg to MacDonagh Park on Saturday morning for a blitz. Both clubs had three teams and there was great skill on show. The boys warmed-up to the sound of Slievenamon and The Galtee Mountain Boy before parading around the field and standing to attention for Amhrán na bhFiain. After the game both teams practised chanting for the game tomorrow. Thanks to all the parents for providing food for everyone. The cocktail sausages went down a treat. There will be no training this coming week with the Cúl Camp taking place.

Next weekend is going to be a very proud few days for our club as four of our players are going to be in All-Ireland action.
Firstly, we wish Grace O’Brien and the Tipperary senior camógs the very best of luck in their All-Ireland semi-final against Kilkenny. This game takes place on Saturday in the Gaelic Grounds at 5:30pm. Sarah Quigley and the Tipperary intermediates play Galway in Cratloe at 2pm on the same day in their All-Ireland semi-final.
We also extend our best wishes to Jake Morris, Barry Heffernan and the Tipperary senior hurlers as they seek to regain the All-Ireland title, last won in 2016, with Brian Cody’s Kilkenny standing in their way.
Camogie News

Under-12
Hard luck to our under-12s who lost out to a strong Annacarty team in the county league semi final at the Ragg on Sunday. It was a fighting display from the Nenagh girls but just wasn’t going to be our day. We will now play in the shield so training will continue on Thursday. Best of luck to those girls playing with the under-14s on Tuesday evening.
The Nenagh Éire Óg under-12 side
Under-6s and Under-8s
Both the under-6s and under-8s were delighted to play Kilruane and Burgess as part of Kilruane MacDonagh’s 50th anniversary celebrations in Ardcroney. Many thanks for the invitation. Our under-8s also played a blitz in Kilcommon against Moneygall, Toomevara and Kiladangan. The girls played brilliantly and made light of the terrible conditions.

Under-12 Hurling
We commiserate with our under-12 hurlers who put in an almighty effort against Toomevara in the North final on Monday last but came out on the wrong side of a 2-7 to 2-5 scoreline. The club couldn’t be prouder of each and every member of the panel for their hard work and dedication to Nenagh Éire Óg all year in both the A and C grades. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the players, their families and the mentors who all put in countless hours of work. Plenty more sport to come for these boys with the Plate competitions throwing in soon. Keep hurling boys!

Under-14

North Tipperary under-14 A hurling champions 2019
Congratulations go to our under-14 hurlers, who in wet and windy conditions in Templederry, overcame a superb challenge from a brilliant Toomevara side in the North final, winning out on a 2-11 to 2-4 scoreline. Indeed the seven-point gap between the sides belies the true nature of this contest as in reality, Toomevara were much closer to Éire Óg. Jack McLoughlin was in flying form scoring a personal tally of 2-3 while Sam O’Farrell (6) and Filip McIntyre (1) completed the scoring. At the other end Eoin Garrigan had a fine game between the sticks while Keelan Rice at full-back and Mason Cawley wearing number six repelled numerous Toomevara attacks. The lads must now prepare for the county semi-final and we wish them every success as they seek county honours.

Seamus Rice, Martin Morris, Jimmy Morris and Adrian McIntyre fly the flag high at full time.
Minor Hurling
Our minor hurlers were defeated by Kiladangan in the championship 4-16 to 3-11. Their final game in the round robin series is on Wednesday evening when they play Ballina at 7pm in Portroe. Best of luck lads.
Junior-A Hurling
Our junior-A hurlers had a great win in the North Tipperary semi-final defeating Roscrea 2-15 to 2-12 in Borrisokane on a wet and windy evening last Friday. Two first-half goals from cousins Anthony and Darragh Walsh set the lads on their way and they now face Toomevara in the final in two weeks time. This game will take place on Sunday, August 25, at 3:30pm in Templederry.
Junior-B Football
Hard luck to our footballers who lost out to Éire Óg Annacarty, 0-7 to 0-5, in a wet and windy Kilcommon on Saturday evening. The lads battled bravely throughout but once again Lady Luck shunned us as we failed to get the rub of the green that would have secured the win. This results ends our interest in this year’s county championship and we wish to thank the entire panel and management for all their efforts this year. We still have the 2019 North Tipperary championship to look forward to.
The panel on Saturday evening was Callan Scully, Brian Maxwell, Peter Hynes, Fiachra Starr, Niall McKeogh, Andrew Loughlin, Alex Jones, Christopher Ryan, Seán McTiernan, Jack Molamphy, Gavin O’Connor, Leonard Ryan, Marky Walsh, Kieran Mullarkey, Thomas O’Brien, Michael Hynes, Danny Ryan and Brian Carr.
Croagh Patrick Climb
On Bank Holiday Monday morning last three carloads made the long trek to Croagh Patrick in Mayo to climb the famous mountain in aid of Milford Hospice. The sun was shining and spirits were high as stories and laughs were exchanged. A quick stop in Loughrea fixed all our caffeine needs before we continued on to Mayo and as the mountain emerged from the distance there were a few gulps as we realised the task ahead.

Early morning start outside MacDonagh Park
We enthusiastically set off from the carpark on the 4km climb to the chapel 764 meters above sea level and it wasn’t long before the chit chat disappeared as limbs tired and muscles screamed for mercy but there wasn’t one mention of taking a break, let alone turning around. The group began to fragment as others paced ahead and the terrain became more difficult to navigate. At times we were on all fours as we crawled to summit and for good measure the heavens decided to open as the wind howled ferociously while the rain cascaded down making the underfoot conditions treacherous as newly formed streams began to flow around our feet.
We consoled ourselves with the knowledge that it would quickly blow over and the scenery from the summit would be worth the effort however Mother Nature had other ideas and visibility diminished to about 30 feet and as the chapel emerged from the grey mist we knew we weren’t going to experience the breath-taking views however all were delighted to have scaled Croagh Patrick.
The journey down proved as unforgiving as loose stones, flowing water and wet and windy weather tried their best to break us but with every step carefully considerated we finally descended to the car park below.
What kept us going through each step was the knowledge that so many had kindly donated money to help those in Milford Hospice and we wish to thank all who contributed to this amazing cause. If you would like to donate our Go Fund Me page will remain active for another few days and you can access it here.
Bartley Ryan
You might have noticed that there is one person missing from all the photographs who had cajoled so many of you into parting with your hard-earned cash. Bartley Ryan was supposed to travel, offer moral support to those climbing the mountain and have the tea ready for when we returned to the cars however due to his debilitating condition, Adhesive Mattress Syndrome, he was unable to get out of the bed in time to travel. We all wish Bartley well as he struggles to overcome this chronic illness. A major fundraising drive and Go Fund Me page will be announced in the not too distant future to raise money to help Bartley fight this disease.
