League heartbreak for our senior camógs, the greatest hurler in Nenagh is revealed while our footballers lose out to Portroe in the John Kissane Cup. All of this and more in this week’s news on the Blues
Senior Hurling

Our senior hurlers have entered this year’s Hogan Cup and have been drawn in Group 2 alongside Ballina, Kiladangan and Roscrea. Please keep an eye on the fixtures section of the website for details of these upcoming games.
Junior-A Hurling

Our junior-A hurlers were made work all the way by a superb Kilruane MacDonaghs side in Puckane on Saturday evening in the North semi-final. Trailing for long periods of the game it took a great second-half goal from captain Bob O’Brien to give the Blues the edge before winning out. The lads now look forward to the North final where they will face Toomevara.
Junior-C Hurling
Our junior-C hurlers completed the round-robin section of the championship with a 3-9 to 3-3 win over Ballinahinch in MacDonagh Park on Sunday morning with Shane Flynn (2) and Seán McTiernan grabbing the all-important goals. Nenagh have now finished on top of the group and look forward to the semi-final.
John Kissane Cup

Due to Covid-19, it was impossible for the committee of the John Kissane football sevens to organise a competition this year so on Friday morning it was decided that the winners of Sunday evening’s junior football challenge between Nenagh Éire Óg and Portroe, clubs that he coached, would be presented with the John Kissane Cup.
On the night Portroe prevailed and captain Kevin O’Halloran gave a lovely speech afterwards where he praised the work John Kissane put into both clubs over the years.
In the North junior-B championship, we have been drawn to play the losers of Moneygall and Burgess in the quarter-final.

Tipperary GAA Clubs’ Draw
Congratulations to David Hackett who won either a car or €15,000 in the first Tipperary GAA Clubs’ Draw on Friday evening. The promoter was Seamus Cleary. We also wish to congratulate Gerry Robinson who won €200 in the same draw. A great start to the draw for the club.
Congratulations Willie and Martin.

Congratulations to Willie Bolger who scored two goals for Sarsfields Hurling Club in the county final against Shamrocks and secure an amazing five in a row set of titles for the Australian side last weekend. That was Willie’s fourth Australian county title to add to his two league medals and 7-a-side title with Sarsfields. Keep up the great work down under Willie
We also send our congratulations to another former player, Martin Slattery who won the Dublin junior-E championship on Sunday afternoon as Round Towers Lusk overcame the challenge of Commercials 2-13 to 2-10 in O’Toole Park. Colm and Damien O’Brien from Burgess also played for Round Towers Lusk. Well done to all involved.

Under-14

So close and yet so far for our Under 14A boys in their Plate Final V Kilruane last Thursday evening. It was a heartbreaking defeat in MacDonagh park for this brilliant group of boys from Éire Óg as they were pipped at the post by a last minute goal from Kilruane. The Éire Óg side fought every inch of the way in what was a whole hearted effort from the boys. Nenagh got off to a good start and clocked up some fantastic scores, however, goals from Kilruane kept their side in touch. The game was level in the final minutes and momentum seemed to be with Nenagh but as the clock entered the final minute of the game another goal came for Kilruane. Nenagh battled to pull the score back but after registering a point in reply that was to be the final score for the match. Congratulations to Kilruane who never gave up. Commiserations to this fabulous group of Éire Óg boys, they are a joy to watch and give everything each time they take to the field. There is a very bright future ahead for this group, their time will come, we have no doubt.
Continued good luck to all Nenagh Éire Óg groups in this week’s matches.

The Presidents’ Cup
Under 14 President’s Cup 2020
Congratulations to our fabulous Under 14 hurlers who won the 2020 Presidents cup in a convincing manner with a win over Burges this evening in a sun drenched MacDonagh Park.
The Éire Óg boys started well, grew into the game and dominated in most positions which gave the platform to build numerous attacks and rattle the Burges net on many occasions.
It was wonderful to have Éire Óg Club president Jimmy Morris on hand to make the presentation of the President’s Cup to the Nenagh joint Captains.
Jimmy was accompanied by fellow club presidents Ger Gavin, Paudie O’Kennedy and Mick Burns.
Thank you to all involved in making this evenings game a great success.
Thank you to Burges for the game.
Thank you to the management group of this great bunch of hurlers who have provided so much joy and entertainment all season. It was a delight to close this years hurling on a positive note for this team.

Our junior-C hurlers continued their good form on Sunday morning in Ballina making it three wins from three in the North championship with a 2-21 to 2-4 win against Ballina. Goals in either half from extreme ultra veteran Lenny Ryan and Michael Hallinan helped secure the win in a game that was in the melting pot until the final quarter when Nenagh pulled away. Our final game of the group stages is on Sunday morning at 11:30am in MacDonagh Park when Ballinahinch will provide the opposition. On another note, we wish to thank former Éire Óg hurler Brian Fitzgibbon who now plays for Ballina for his help in treating one of our injured players.

Our under six hurlers had their very first blitz of the year on Saturday morning last in MacDonagh Park Nenagh. The boys played Ballina in what was a fantastic morning’s hurling for these young stars. Nenagh fielded five teams for the blitz. This blitz was the first-ever match for many of these young stars and each one hurled brilliantly. A big well done to these boys on the wonderful performances and effort they all put in at this morning’s blitz. Thanks to Ballina for traveling. Training continues next Saturday morning at ten o’clock to eleven in the park.
Under-8
Our under eight boys traveled to Thurles on Saturday morning last to take part in a blitz against teams from all over Tipperary. The boys got to play teams from Drom & Inch, Thurles Gaels, Sean Treacys, Moycarkey Borris and Portroe. The boys played very well and enjoyed the opportunity to play against the many different teams. Hurling training will continue each Tuesday evening from six to seven and Saturday mornings from ten o’clock to eleven unless we have a game. New members (boys born in 2012 or 2013) are always welcome. Under ten boys, this group had a very busy week with two blitzes to navigate. First blitz was a mid-week affair, the boys played Kiladangan in three very competitive games last Wednesday evening in MacDonagh Park. The boys played with great determination and effort. There were some excellent skills on display by the Nenagh boys. Thanks to Kiladangan for traveling over to play.
The second blitz for our under ten boys was Saturday morning in Thurles, the boys took on Cashel in the glorious Autumn sunshine. Our boys played three games against three Cashel King Cormacs sides and as we expected Cashel were well up for today’s challenge. Our boys were every bit equal to Cashels’ challenge and we saw some excellent skills, huge effort and determination from the Nenagh boys. Our boys produced some brilliant scores, determined hooking and blocking and excellent teamwork throughout the three games. Thank you very much to the two Under eight hurlers who stepped up and played with their Under ten club mates at the blitz, this resulted in two sets of brothers lining out for the under tens. Congratulations to these two fabulous young superstars on their under ten debut. Well done to all the boys who played against Cashel.

Hard luck to our under twelve A Plate Final team who put in a massive effort but just couldn’t take the match from an excellent Kilruane MacDonaghs side last Saturday evening in Cloughjordan. Alanna Peters clears her lines
Team 1 played Roscrea in their county semi-final on Sunday afternoon in a Ballinahinch. Playing against a strong wind in the first half, our backs were superb, keeping the Roscrea girls scoreless. We led at half time by a point after a great run and shot from Grace Cleary.
The second half was a ding-dong battle with Roscrea scoring a goal early to go ahead. Grace Cleary got us back ahead after a super run on goal from Sophie Hourigan. She passed the ball goalward and Grace finished it to the net.
Roscrea came back again and scored another goal, putting them back ahead. The Nenagh girls didn’t bow their heads though and after great midfield play by Saoirse Ryan and Anna O’Dwyer, Sophie pounced again to get her low shot into the net.
The Roscrea girls battled right to the end, but our backs put their bodies on the line and held firm to win by a single point. Hard luck to Roscrea and well done to all the girls on a fantastic match. Thanks to all who came to support. Both teams 1 & 2 will now have their co finals next weekend, fixtures to be confirmed. We need all under-12 girls at training this week to prepare. Monday and Thursday 6-7pm.

The club wishes to thank joint managers Noel Maloney and John Brennan for the selfless efforts as well as their diligent and hardworking management team, all of whom left no stone unturned in their efforts to win the Dan Breen. We also wish to thank the panel of players for their dedication all year. They are a tremendous bunch of lads whose commitment to the team could never be questioned. Under-16

Under-16 hurlers, North Tipperary finalists 2020
Our under sixteen panel put in a tremendous effort in their North final v Toomevara last week, unfortunately, though it wasn’t to be for the Nenagh squad. The Nenagh boys attacked the game from the throw-in and were not found wanting when it came to effort and commitment. Nenagh and Toomevara traded scores early on until a goal from Toomevara put a chink of light between the teams. In the final quarter of the match, with the scoreboard not in their favor Nenagh pressed hard to rattle the Toome net and came tantalizing close on a number of occasions but never managed that much-needed goal to shore up the deficit. The Nenagh lads played with passion, tremendous commitment and great heart, they fought for the game right into the final seconds. The entire Nenagh panel and management group should be very proud of themselves. Final score Nenagh Éire Óg 0-12 Toomevara 1-15.
Continued good luck to all Nenagh Éire Óg groups in this week’s match(es).

Nenagh Éire Óg are delighted to announce that Paudie O’Kennedy is our new club president

The name O’Kennedy is synonymous with GAA in our town and Paudie O’Kennedy has given a lifetime of service to Gaelic games in Nenagh.
From the moment he could walk Paudie was regularly to be found pucking a ball off the gable end of Ciss Fahy’s house, honing his skills before graduating to the Forge Field where many All-Ireland finals were hurled with friends and relations long into his childhood evenings.

As fit today as he was in his hurling days
As there were no underage competitions at the time, Paudie had to wait until he was fifteen years old before lining out for the club’s minor side against a combination of Portroe and Ballina and his performances soon caught the eye of the county selectors as he helped the club win a North final in 1955 before eventually losing out to the famed Thurles Sarsfields side in the county final, a side littered with future stars of the game including Michael Murphy who would captain the county to All-Ireland senior glory in 1964 as well as the legendary Jimmy Doyle. Of course, our own side were not without talented hurlers as Mick Gilmartin and Mick Burns more than made their own impact on the game.
In 1957 Paudie, along with clubmates Devere Reynolds and Paddy Kearns, won Munster and All-Ireland titles with the Blue & Gold having beaten Limerick 3-8 to 1-4 in the Munster decider before accounting for Kilkenny 4-7 to 3-7 in Croke Park.
One of Paudie’s biggest regrets on the field of play was losing the North minor final in 1957 after a replay, a medal he’d gladly swap his All-Ireland minor for. However, his collection of medals did not end there and he was extremely successful in schools’ hurling capturing a Dean Ryan Cup, two Dr. Harty Cups as well as an All-Ireland colleges’ title as well as two coveted Fitzgibbon Cup medals with University College Dublin.

Paudie was a member of the 1957 North Tipperary senior hurling winning panel and played a starring role in the 1964 success where he contributed four points from wing forward before retiring from playing the game two years later but that did not end his involvement with Nenagh Éire Óg and he served on numerous committees over the years, putting in countless hours to ensure the continued success of the club.

We are delighted to have held a hugely successful Nenagh Éire Óg Cúl Camp last week in MacDonagh Park. The camp was attended by many of our juvenile members and each day smiles, laughter, fun, excitement, competition and joy abounded at MacDonagh park. All-Ireland winners, Tipperary and Nenagh Éire Óg senior hurlers not to mention local superstars, Barry Heffernan and Jake Morris also called into our Cúl Camp to see our future stars enjoying camp and to encourage our young players to keep up all their good work at home practicing our games. Nenagh Éire Óg are delighted to launch our new camogie jerseys
Éire Óg camogie jerseys manufactured in Nenagh by Gaelic Armour and sponsored by front line worker Sandra Farrell
Nurses have donned the Nenagh Éire Óg camogie jersey in the past and no doubt into the future the jersey will be worn by frontline healthcare staff. The World Health Organisation has designated 2020 the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife in honour of the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. How appropriate it is then that the club received a call from well known local nurse Sandra Farrell, current Director of Ormond Healthcare, who wanted to donate a set of jerseys to the senior team of Nenagh Éire Óg Camogie Club for the upcoming season.
To tie in with Ms. Farrell’s generous offer, Nenagh Éire Óg camogie club in return wanted to express their thanks to all of the healthcare staff and nurses who have been hugely dedicated and have made many sacrifices since the outbreak of the COVID 19 pandemic. To do this the club have added the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife logo to their jersey this year.
Speaking at the launch of the new Jersey Ms. Farrell of Ormond Healthcare commented on the work of the frontline workers during the current pandemic and said “Our healthcare workers have placed themselves at risk to keep us safe and we’re so grateful to all of them for rising to the challenge in these unprecedented times. I am delighted to support Nenagh Éire Óg Camogie Club this year and I think it is a wonderful initiative that they have placed the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife logo on their jerseys as a way of showing their appreciation to the frontline staff.”

The jerseys will be the first set of officially licensed camogie jerseys designed and manufactured in Nenagh at Gaelic Armour’s new Irish production facility. Gaelic Armour, founded in 2016 by local businessman Billy Hayes, became Tipperary’s first officially licensed supplier to the GAA and only the fourth brand to receive the highly contested intercounty license in the history of the GAA. Gaelic Armour secured the inter-county schools and club license in early 2020 and recently opened a new state of the art facility in Stereame Business Park where they design and manufacture innovative on-field playing kit to athletes, sports teams and individuals.
Speaking at the launch of the new jersey Billy Hayes commented that “having recently relocated our entire operation to new premises in Stereame Business Park it is very satisfying to be designing and manufacturing for a local team based only a stone’s throw from the plant. It’s our aim to offer a real alternative in terms of design and technical innovation to GAA and camogie clubs. Our goal is to grow our business and supply jerseys all over the country in the coming months and years ahead”.

Cathaoirleach of Nenagh Municipal District, Councillor Seamus Morris, who is a former PRO of Nenagh Éire Óg Camogie Club in Nenagh and has been known to source sponsorship from the four corners of Ireland over the years for the camogie club, approached the current committee about placing the new Nenagh 800 Logo on the jerseys for the coming season.
This year Nenagh is celebrating 800 years marking the development of the town over the ages. Due to COVID-19 many of the celebrations have been postponed but not before the town got the opportunity to launch a new website, brand and song. The Nenagh 800 logo will be added to the jersey and the club is delighted to support this initiative and create awareness of this historic year.

©Paudie Bourke
Speaking at the launch of the new jerseys Cllr Morris said “It’s a historic day in more ways than one. With Nenagh 800 taking place this year I am delighted that the club has agreed to place the Nenagh 800 logo on the jersey. Sandra Farrell, former Mayor of Nenagh Town Council, and a camogie player with Nenagh at underage level has come onboard to donate a set of jerseys through her healthcare company Ormond Healthcare, a business that is providing a valuable service and supporting the local economy. We are in a fairly unique situation as the jerseys are being manufactured and supplied locally in Nenagh by Gaelic Armour who will be supporting the local economy employing a mix of staff from graphic designers to production operators at their facility in Nenagh for years to come.”
Commenting on the initiative Nenagh Municipal District Administrator Rosemary Joyce wished Nenagh Éire Óg every success in the coming season and was appreciative of the fact that the club added the Nenagh 800 logo to the jersey adding that “Nenagh 800 is a very special year for the town and we hope to proceed over the coming months and into 2021 with any events that had to be curtailed or canceled as a result of the ongoing pandemic. It’s very fitting to be at Nenagh Castle today to launch the jerseys as the castle is central and iconic to the Nenagh 800 celebrations and synonymous with Nenagh”.

©Paudie Bourke
Handing over the jerseys to the joint captains of the senior camogie team, Alanna Morris and Maeve Coffey, club chairman Kieran Malone thanked Ms. Farrell for sponsorship and added that “the new jersey is a great example of collaboration within Nenagh where we a have local businesswoman in Ormond Healthcare supporting the female athletes, Gaelic Armour making them locally, the opportunity to thank the frontline workers by adding the logo and finally we get to raise awareness of historic year of Nenagh 800. The club has received support from the Municipal District over the years in the form of many sports grants so it’s nice for us as a club to be able to give something back also”.
Jerseys will be available in A Sportsman’s Dream on Kenyon Street in Nenagh and available to order online in any size on www.gaelicarmour.com

Action from the senior championship against Drom & Inch
Senior ladies’ next match is against Clonoulty on Friday at 7.15. Hard luck to the seniors who lost out to Drom and Inch on a scoreline of 3.18 to 2.04 last Friday evening in Round 2 of the Championship.
Under-14

The under-14 side
Our final group game of the season took place on Sunday morning in Toomevara. It was a case of ‘what might have been’. We very nearly got out of jail, coming from ten points down at the second half water break to close the gap to two points as the final whistle neared. A goal would have won it but unfortunately, it came at the other end. Final score Toomevara 3-8 Nenagh 2-6. Well done to all on a great effort and best of luck to Toomevara.

The under-12 camógs that played Borris-Ileigh last Monday evening
Our two under-12 teams were in action this week.
Team 2 traveled to Borrisoleigh on Monday evening for their final game of the group. A great battling performance from these girls and a superb long-range free by Sophie Hourigan saw us come away with the win.
Team 1 played Shannon Rovers on Wednesday in their second group game and, despite missing four players, they held their own against a strong Rovers team. Rovers tacked on a few scores in the final ten minutes to see us come away with a second loss of the campaign. Well done to all the girls who worked so hard in searing temperatures.
We play Lorrha at home this week in our next game. Details TBC.
No training on Monday as Cúl Camp begins tomorrow.
We will post the match details on the WhatsApp Group as and when we get them.

The under-12 side that played Shannon Rovers
Under-10
Our under-10 girls traveled in big numbers to Borrisoleigh this morning for a blitz with Borrisoleigh, Drom & Inch and Thurles Sarsfields. We had 22 girls between our two teams and they played brilliantly. Borrisoleigh hosted the first of four blitzes between the four clubs and they ran a great show. Huge parental support was there for the girls. The girls’ hard work practicing at home has been paying off and with the Cúl Camp this coming week it will come on again. There will be no training this week with the camp. Both teams played four matches and ran themselves into the ground.
Under-8
There will be no training this week as the Cúl Camp is on in Éire Óg. With the majority of players taking part, it has been decided that training after a long day at the camp would be too tiring for the girls.

Action from the under-14 clash with Toomevara
Under-6
Under-8
Under eight boys hosted Toomevara in MacDonagh Park on Saturday morning. The boys were divided into three teams and each team played three games against the Toomevara teams. It was a hugely successful morning and there were some excellent skills and determination on display from all the boys. At the end of the blitz, there were big smiles in abundance from the boys. The under eight management group is aiming to have more blitzes in the near future so we look forward to these with great anticipation. This week we will have our Cúl camp on the club grounds so no training for the week or next Saturday morning. Keep up the practicing at home as the blitzes will be more enjoyable for the boys the quicker they are at rising and striking which will mean they get more touches during the games making it far more enjoyable. Well done to all the boys who played Toomevara on Saturday morning, fantastic effort all around.

Under-16
Our under-16 team suffered its first defeat of the championship going down to a stronger Toomevara outfit. Nenagh were well in the game up to the last quarter but a stronger Toomevara finish ensured a comprehensive victory to the boys in green and gold. However, Nenagh Éire Óg have a chance of making amends on Monday night when the knockout stages begin and we play Kilruane in Cloughjordan night at 6.45.
Goalkeeper Training
Thank you to all the parents who encourage practicing of both codes at home between training sessions, this is fundamental to the children developing their skills and confidence on the ball and ultimately their enjoyment of the game. A few minutes each day practicing is invaluable to a child’s skills.

They then continued the hike towards Garrykennedy where they enjoyed freshly baked homemade scones and jam all made and provided by our Healthy Club Officer Bartley Ryan. Happily and surprisingly, there were no reported cases of food poisoning afterwards.

Sympathies
We extend our sympathies to the family and friends of the late Cissie Russell, Carrick-on-Suir. Mrs. Russell’s daughter, Catherine McTiernan, is well known to everyone in our club for her tireless work as club secretary while her sons Seán and Dermot, and daughter Tara all play for our club while Catherine’s husband Pauric is a great supporter of our club.
Carrick Swan GAA club wrote the following lovely tribute to Mrs. Russell this morning.
All in Carrick Swan GAA Club are deeply saddened this morning to hear of the passing of our esteemed vice-president Cissie Russell.
To many people in the club Cissie was a mother figure who loved the club deeply and who travelled to all our games when able to offer what could be termed as vociferous support with her late brother Sean and late sisters Peggy, May and Kathleen and God help anyone that had a bad word to say about the Swan or their players if you were close to that enclave!
There are many different types of heroes in clubs but the real heroes are the people like Cissie who worked tirelessly for the club and who only asked in return that you give of your best.
Cissie’s home in Pearse Square had a path worn out to it both day and night as members of the club collected the keys to the club from her and there would always be the chat at the front gate. Cissie was also instrumental in keeping the bingo going.
The ‘jerseys’ were a different story as long before the times of ‘climacool’ fabric that we have now back then we had only a few sets of jerseys which could have been hand knitted! and when they’d get wet during a match they would add 2 stone weight to you between the rain, blood and sweat.
Cissie being the ‘mother’ did the washing of all the jerseys which was not an easy job and took great pride as they hung proudly on her washing line and they were always in pristine condition for the various teams to wear apart from turning ‘foxy’ over the years!
The losses of her husband Mikey, son Noel and great- grandson Cillian hit Cissie very hard but she battled on surrounded by a great family and to her sons Tom and Michael John and daughters Catherine and Angela and all the extended family we offer our deepest sympathy.
The passing of Cissie is another link of the old Swan gone but she leaves behind lovely memories and her place in the club will live on and will never diminish.
One of the Swan’s greatest servants, may Cissie rest in peace.
To Catherine, Pauric, Seán, Dermot and Tara we in Nenagh Éire Óg offer our deepest sympathies.

Keep up the practicing at home between training and well done to all the boys. Mason Cawley clears his lines against Silvermines in the under-16 championship
The under-16 team produced another solid performance against Silvermines running out winners by 3-16 to 0-10. Our goalkeeper and six backs have only conceded one goal in three outings which was crucial to this win. Midfielders and forwards are getting on the scoresheet with some excellent teamwork. With a strong spine and good hurlers on the flanks, this young team is progressing well and is training very hard.
