Nenagh Éire Óg are delighted to launch our new camogie jerseys
Éire Óg camogie jerseys manufactured in Nenagh by Gaelic Armour and sponsored by front line worker Sandra Farrell
Nurses have donned the Nenagh Éire Óg camogie jersey in the past and no doubt into the future the jersey will be worn by frontline healthcare staff. The World Health Organisation has designated 2020 the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife in honour of the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. How appropriate it is then that the club received a call from well known local nurse Sandra Farrell, current Director of Ormond Healthcare, who wanted to donate a set of jerseys to the senior team of Nenagh Éire Óg Camogie Club for the upcoming season.
To tie in with Ms. Farrell’s generous offer, Nenagh Éire Óg camogie club in return wanted to express their thanks to all of the healthcare staff and nurses who have been hugely dedicated and have made many sacrifices since the outbreak of the COVID 19 pandemic. To do this the club have added the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife logo to their jersey this year.
Speaking at the launch of the new Jersey Ms. Farrell of Ormond Healthcare commented on the work of the frontline workers during the current pandemic and said “Our healthcare workers have placed themselves at risk to keep us safe and we’re so grateful to all of them for rising to the challenge in these unprecedented times. I am delighted to support Nenagh Éire Óg Camogie Club this year and I think it is a wonderful initiative that they have placed the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife logo on their jerseys as a way of showing their appreciation to the frontline staff.”

The jerseys will be the first set of officially licensed camogie jerseys designed and manufactured in Nenagh at Gaelic Armour’s new Irish production facility. Gaelic Armour, founded in 2016 by local businessman Billy Hayes, became Tipperary’s first officially licensed supplier to the GAA and only the fourth brand to receive the highly contested intercounty license in the history of the GAA. Gaelic Armour secured the inter-county schools and club license in early 2020 and recently opened a new state of the art facility in Stereame Business Park where they design and manufacture innovative on-field playing kit to athletes, sports teams and individuals.
Speaking at the launch of the new jersey Billy Hayes commented that “having recently relocated our entire operation to new premises in Stereame Business Park it is very satisfying to be designing and manufacturing for a local team based only a stone’s throw from the plant. It’s our aim to offer a real alternative in terms of design and technical innovation to GAA and camogie clubs. Our goal is to grow our business and supply jerseys all over the country in the coming months and years ahead”.

Cathaoirleach of Nenagh Municipal District, Councillor Seamus Morris, who is a former PRO of Nenagh Éire Óg Camogie Club in Nenagh and has been known to source sponsorship from the four corners of Ireland over the years for the camogie club, approached the current committee about placing the new Nenagh 800 Logo on the jerseys for the coming season.
This year Nenagh is celebrating 800 years marking the development of the town over the ages. Due to COVID-19 many of the celebrations have been postponed but not before the town got the opportunity to launch a new website, brand and song. The Nenagh 800 logo will be added to the jersey and the club is delighted to support this initiative and create awareness of this historic year.

Speaking at the launch of the new jerseys Cllr Morris said “It’s a historic day in more ways than one. With Nenagh 800 taking place this year I am delighted that the club has agreed to place the Nenagh 800 logo on the jersey. Sandra Farrell, former Mayor of Nenagh Town Council, and a camogie player with Nenagh at underage level has come onboard to donate a set of jerseys through her healthcare company Ormond Healthcare, a business that is providing a valuable service and supporting the local economy. We are in a fairly unique situation as the jerseys are being manufactured and supplied locally in Nenagh by Gaelic Armour who will be supporting the local economy employing a mix of staff from graphic designers to production operators at their facility in Nenagh for years to come.”
Commenting on the initiative Nenagh Municipal District Administrator Rosemary Joyce wished Nenagh Éire Óg every success in the coming season and was appreciative of the fact that the club added the Nenagh 800 logo to the jersey adding that “Nenagh 800 is a very special year for the town and we hope to proceed over the coming months and into 2021 with any events that had to be curtailed or canceled as a result of the ongoing pandemic. It’s very fitting to be at Nenagh Castle today to launch the jerseys as the castle is central and iconic to the Nenagh 800 celebrations and synonymous with Nenagh”.

©Paudie Bourke
Handing over the jerseys to the joint captains of the senior camogie team, Alanna Morris and Maeve Coffey, club chairman Kieran Malone thanked Ms. Farrell for sponsorship and added that “the new jersey is a great example of collaboration within Nenagh where we a have local businesswoman in Ormond Healthcare supporting the female athletes, Gaelic Armour making them locally, the opportunity to thank the frontline workers by adding the logo and finally we get to raise awareness of historic year of Nenagh 800. The club has received support from the Municipal District over the years in the form of many sports grants so it’s nice for us as a club to be able to give something back also”.
Jerseys will be available in A Sportsman’s Dream on Kenyon Street in Nenagh and available to order online in any size on www.gaelicarmour.com

Action from the senior championship against Drom & Inch
Senior ladies’ next match is against Clonoulty on Friday at 7.15. Hard luck to the seniors who lost out to Drom and Inch on a scoreline of 3.18 to 2.04 last Friday evening in Round 2 of the Championship.
Under-14

The under-14 side
Our final group game of the season took place on Sunday morning in Toomevara. It was a case of ‘what might have been’. We very nearly got out of jail, coming from ten points down at the second half water break to close the gap to two points as the final whistle neared. A goal would have won it but unfortunately, it came at the other end. Final score Toomevara 3-8 Nenagh 2-6. Well done to all on a great effort and best of luck to Toomevara.
Under-12

The under-12 camógs that played Borris-Ileigh last Monday evening
Our two under-12 teams were in action this week.
Team 2 traveled to Borrisoleigh on Monday evening for their final game of the group. A great battling performance from these girls and a superb long-range free by Sophie Hourigan saw us come away with the win.
Team 1 played Shannon Rovers on Wednesday in their second group game and, despite missing four players, they held their own against a strong Rovers team. Rovers tacked on a few scores in the final ten minutes to see us come away with a second loss of the campaign. Well done to all the girls who worked so hard in searing temperatures.
We play Lorrha at home this week in our next game. Details TBC.
No training on Monday as Cúl Camp begins tomorrow.
We will post the match details on the WhatsApp Group as and when we get them.

The under-12 side that played Shannon Rovers
Under-10
Our under-10 girls traveled in big numbers to Borrisoleigh this morning for a blitz with Borrisoleigh, Drom & Inch and Thurles Sarsfields. We had 22 girls between our two teams and they played brilliantly. Borrisoleigh hosted the first of four blitzes between the four clubs and they ran a great show. Huge parental support was there for the girls. The girls’ hard work practicing at home has been paying off and with the Cúl Camp this coming week it will come on again. There will be no training this week with the camp. Both teams played four matches and ran themselves into the ground.
Under-8
There will be no training this week as the Cúl Camp is on in Éire Óg. With the majority of players taking part, it has been decided that training after a long day at the camp would be too tiring for the girls.

Action from the under-14 clash with Toomevara
Under-6
Under-8
Under eight boys hosted Toomevara in MacDonagh Park on Saturday morning. The boys were divided into three teams and each team played three games against the Toomevara teams. It was a hugely successful morning and there were some excellent skills and determination on display from all the boys. At the end of the blitz, there were big smiles in abundance from the boys. The under eight management group is aiming to have more blitzes in the near future so we look forward to these with great anticipation. This week we will have our Cúl camp on the club grounds so no training for the week or next Saturday morning. Keep up the practicing at home as the blitzes will be more enjoyable for the boys the quicker they are at rising and striking which will mean they get more touches during the games making it far more enjoyable. Well done to all the boys who played Toomevara on Saturday morning, fantastic effort all around.

Under-16
Our under-16 team suffered its first defeat of the championship going down to a stronger Toomevara outfit. Nenagh were well in the game up to the last quarter but a stronger Toomevara finish ensured a comprehensive victory to the boys in green and gold. However, Nenagh Éire Óg have a chance of making amends on Monday night when the knockout stages begin and we play Kilruane in Cloughjordan night at 6.45.

Sympathies
We extend our sympathies to the family and friends of the late Cissie Russell, Carrick-on-Suir. Mrs. Russell’s daughter, Catherine McTiernan, is well known to everyone in our club for her tireless work as club secretary while her sons Seán and Dermot, and daughter Tara all play for our club while Catherine’s husband Pauric is a great supporter of our club.
Carrick Swan GAA club wrote the following lovely tribute to Mrs. Russell this morning.
All in Carrick Swan GAA Club are deeply saddened this morning to hear of the passing of our esteemed vice-president Cissie Russell.
To many people in the club Cissie was a mother figure who loved the club deeply and who travelled to all our games when able to offer what could be termed as vociferous support with her late brother Sean and late sisters Peggy, May and Kathleen and God help anyone that had a bad word to say about the Swan or their players if you were close to that enclave!
There are many different types of heroes in clubs but the real heroes are the people like Cissie who worked tirelessly for the club and who only asked in return that you give of your best.
Cissie’s home in Pearse Square had a path worn out to it both day and night as members of the club collected the keys to the club from her and there would always be the chat at the front gate. Cissie was also instrumental in keeping the bingo going.
The ‘jerseys’ were a different story as long before the times of ‘climacool’ fabric that we have now back then we had only a few sets of jerseys which could have been hand knitted! and when they’d get wet during a match they would add 2 stone weight to you between the rain, blood and sweat.
Cissie being the ‘mother’ did the washing of all the jerseys which was not an easy job and took great pride as they hung proudly on her washing line and they were always in pristine condition for the various teams to wear apart from turning ‘foxy’ over the years!
The losses of her husband Mikey, son Noel and great- grandson Cillian hit Cissie very hard but she battled on surrounded by a great family and to her sons Tom and Michael John and daughters Catherine and Angela and all the extended family we offer our deepest sympathy.
The passing of Cissie is another link of the old Swan gone but she leaves behind lovely memories and her place in the club will live on and will never diminish.
One of the Swan’s greatest servants, may Cissie rest in peace.
To Catherine, Pauric, Seán, Dermot and Tara we in Nenagh Éire Óg offer our deepest sympathies.

A Message from the Chairman
FOR THE ATTENTION OF EACH GROUP IN THE CLUB
It is vitally important at this stage in our battle against Covid 19 that each group refocus their efforts and raise their standards again. As we have seen in other places, we are always at risk of the club being closed down and exiting all competitions, and, as is happening nationwide, some people here are letting their guard down. While we cannot eliminate all risks as people must go to work etc, it’s what we can control that we now must work harder at.
If you’re not part of a training group or required to be there, you should not be at the training session. Do not interact with groups if you have no reason to be there.
Thanks to our excellent Covid supervisors, sanitiser is present at all training sessions. Use it on entry to and exit from training and matches. You should not need to be asked as happens now.

Big Bertha

Matt Lillis smirks while riding Big Bertha
Following the recent permanent breakdown of our old mower, the club have invested in a new one which arrived in MacDonagh Park on Wednesday morning last. Already known as Big Bertha, the new machine, a Ransome Mower, is hoped to meet our needs for many years to come but will still require a lot of hard work from our volunteers in order to pay for it and so we are asking all of our members, supporters and players to join our online lotto which will go towards the repayment of the loan.

Dear 1989 . . . you will not believe what we have done with hurling
Brian McDonnell has once again provided an insightful article, using statistics, to demonstrate how the game of hurling has evolved from the 1989 All-Ireland final between Tipperary and Antrim to last year’s encounter between ourselves and Kilkenny.

Under-10

Under-10 action V Kilruane MacDonaghs
Under-10 boys had their first match this weekend against Kilruane MacDonaghs in Cloughjordan. We had thirty-one boys playing on three teams. The games were very competitive. We play Durlas Óg next weekend in Thurles. New players always welcome (boys born in 2010 or 2011). A few of our boys played their first game against Kilruane and got on really well so it’s not too late to come along and try out hurling or football for the year. Training continues this week for hurling and football as follows:- under ten hurling training each Tuesday evening from six o’clock to seven and Saturday mornings from ten o’clock to eleven. Under ten football training will be every Wednesday evening from half-past five to half-past six. Under-14
It was a BYE week for our under-14 hurlers last week but they’re keeping up the good work at training and very much looking forward to getting back to action this coming week against Kilruane in Cloughjordan on Thursday evening.

Under-10 action V Kilruane MacDonaghs
Under-16
Our under-16 hurlers fought hard in the dying minutes of an excellent match for a well-earned draw with Ballina last Monday in Ballina. Leading at half time with the aid of a stiff breeze by three points Nenagh found themselves four points down at the end of the third quarter. Thankfully the emphasis in training on fitness paid off and the margin was wiped out with just five minutes remaining and Nenagh was unfortunate not to come away with maximum points. Winners last year of the under-15 competition Ballina are an excellent side and this result will give our players great confidence going forward. The club wishes the injured Ballina player a speedy recovery. Final score: Nenagh Éire Óg 2-13 Ballina 1-16. An excellent game of hurling from all involved.
Continued good luck to all Nenagh Éire Óg groups in this week’s round of the North Tipperary hurling matches. We’re all looking forward to the games with great anticipation. Thanks to all for your efforts under the strangest of circumstances so far this year, it’s appreciated.

Goalkeeper training is now underway and any aspiring young goalie from under fourteen and under sixteen groups should share their interest with a mentor. Thanks to Shane Hennessy for leading this initiative.
Covid-19
For any child returning to training specific guidelines and requirements for their safe return have been issued on the various group communications.
It is vitally important at this stage in our battle against Covid 19 that each group refocus their efforts and raise their standards again. As we have seen elsewhere we are always at risk of the club being closed down and exiting all competitions as a direct result of letting our guard down. So that we ensure the club continues to be an effectively managed environment observing Covid safety guidelines all groups are asked to ensure that we are using sanitiser upon entry and exit of training and matches, do not interact with training groups which you are not involved with, maintain social distancing at matches and lastly if you wish to go to house parties don’t come to the field. Your cooperation is of vital importance to the club and our community.
Thank you to those who volunteered as Covid officers for the different age groups, without this framework and support from parents return to play would not be possible. Thank you to the parents for your patience and co-operation with the new Covid procedures around return to play. Please continue to follow all of the GAA and HSE guidelines.

Senior Camogie
The seniors kick off their competitive season with a first-round championship match against Éire Óg Annacarty in Nenagh on Friday the 7th of July at 7.15pm. Good luck to all involved.
Under-16
The under-16s played Kiladangan in Puckane last Wednesday and in an excellent display of camogie by both teams, Éire Óg ended up losing by a point to an injury-time goal. It was a great performance from everyone. The next match is against Portroe.
Under-14

We gained our first competitive win of the year in a super display against Portroe at McDonagh Park on Sunday afternoon. Hard work, hard tackling and well-taken scores saw our girls come away with a 6-4 to 3-4 win. Well done to all on a great display.
Our next game is next Sunday at home to Lorrha. Training continues Thursday 7-8pm Thursday at Éire Óg.
Under-12
Our two under-12 teams were in action this week. A depleted Nenagh 1 played a strong Kilruane team in Ardcroney on Thursday. Despite a spirited performance by our girls, we came away defeated. Best of luck to Kilruane in the rest of the championship.
On Friday, Team 2 travelled to Ballinderry to play Shannon Rovers in their second game. Even though the team was made up with many under-10s, we put on a superb performance of tackling and blocking. We couldn’t win it, but we certainly left everything out on the field.
No matches in the week ahead. Our training time this week is Thursday 6-7pm. All are welcome to join us.
Under-10
Under-10s play Toomevara on Wednesday evening in Toomevara in their first game. Training this week is on Monday only.

Senior Hurling

A jolly Darragh Droog arrives at Semple Stadium on Sunday evening
Our senior hurlers got off to the perfect start in this year’s FBD Insurance senior hurling championship on Sunday evening when we recorded a 1-19 to 0-11 win over Holycross Ballycahill. Played in an eerily quiet Semple Stadium with only 200 in total allowed inside the building, Nenagh finished the first half strongly thanks to a 27th minute Michael Heffernan goal. Incidentally, this game created a little piece of club history as it was the first time we played a match streamed live on the internet thanks to the county board’s new service. Our next game is against Clonoulty Rossmore on Sunday, 7th August, in Semple Stadium at 7pm.

Club man Eddie Hynes, aided by Eddie Tucker, Shane Connolly and 35 other hardy cyclists, will complete a full lap of Lough Derg, totalling 106 km, to raise money for local charity, Living Links Nenagh. In 2015, Eddie’s son Oisín became a victim of suicide and this wonderful charity provided invaluable support to the Hynes family during those tough times. The cyclists aim to raise €5,000 for Living Links and we are asking our supporters to please dig deep into your pockets and help. If you would like to donate, you can access their Go Fund Me page here.

Last Wednesday we had our first championship match, despite losing to a good Ballina team, everyone put in a great effort. Our next match is Wednesday 29th in Puckane against Kiladangan.
Under-14

We played our first competitive match of the year against Kiladangan in Puckane on Sunday morning. After a very even first half, we got caught by two sucker punch goals just after half time. Despite dominating the rest of the game, we couldn’t make it show on the scoreboard and Kiladangan went on to win 4-5 to 1-5. Best for Nenagh on the day were Eimear Brislane and Ella O’Brien.
Training continues Monday and Thursday 7-8pm Thursday at Éire Óg.
Under-12

Our two under-12 teams had their first games of the season this week. Nenagh 2 were first up, playing a strong Kilruane team in MacDonagh Park on Thursday. After taking the first half to get settled, we came back well in the second. All sixteen girls gave everything they had but lost out to Kilruane 6-2 to 2-3. Best of luck to Kilruane in the rest of the championship.
Team 2 played Portroe in a challenge match on Friday evening. A strong display from every one of the girls saw us come away with a good win. Thanks to Portroe for a great game and best of luck in the championship.
Our training time this week is Monday 6-7pm. All are welcome to join us.
Team 1 play away to Kilruane 1 on Thursday evening at 7.30pm in Cloughjordan.
Team 2 play away to Shannon Rovers on Fri 31st at 7pm in Ballinderry.

These two had the best view of proceedings at MacDonagh Park on Sunday when Toomevara played Borris-Ileigh in the FBD Insurance county senior hurling championship ©Sportsfile
We’ve had quite a few inquiries regarding tickets for Sunday’s FBD Insurance senior hurling clash between Nenagh Éire Óg and Holycross Ballycahill.
The club wishes to state the following:
- We have no allocation of tickets to distribute to our supporters. Once our senior panel, management, backroom team and club officials have received their individual tickets, there will be little or none left for our supporters. This is an issue that is beyond not just our control, but beyond the control of the GAA as a whole.
- Anyone with a pass are to apply using the channels that will be made available later in the week by the Tipperary County Board.
- This match will be streamed live by the Tipperary County Board. Further details of this can be found here.
The Tipperary County Board have confirmed that the FBD Insurance senior hurling championship game between Nenagh Éire Óg and Holycross will be streamed live on their website tipperary.gaa.ie
- Holycross 3pm: Kilruane MacDonaghs v Thurles Sarsfields
- Semple Stadium 7.30pm: JK Brackens v Kiladangan
- MacDonagh Park, Nenagh 1pm: Borris Ileigh v Toomevara
- Semple Stadium 7pm: Holycross Ballycahill v Nenagh Éire Óg
Our minor hurlers play their first competitive match, the seniors are in Semple Stadium this Sunday evening while a first-aid training course is offered. All of this and more, in this week’s news on the Blues
Minor Hurling

Our minor hurlers were the first team in the club to take to the field in championship action this year and ended up on the wrong side of a 3-10 to 5-15 scoreline against Lorrha Rovers in Puckane. Seth Shayanewako was in flying form early on setting up goals for Ben West and Seán Crowe however Lorrha Rovers quickly took control and as we approached half time, they took a lead which they would not relinquish for the remainder of the encounter. Jamie Cottrell got a late goal for the Blues but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.
Senior Hurling

Our senior hurlers open their championship campaign on Sunday evening next, 7pm, Semple Stadium against Holycross Ballycahill in the FBD Insurance county championship.
Unfortunately, due to Covid 19 restrictions, the attendance at this fixture will be limited to 200 people. This figure includes the panels, management and backroom teams of both clubs as well as the referee and his officials. Therefore access for our supporters will be severely limited. Unless you have one of the golden tickets you will be denied entry. We do acknowledge that many of our supporters will be bitterly disappointed at not being able to attend but this is out of our hands and indeed out of the control of the GAA who are only following government restrictions. However, you can follow the proceedings as we will be providing updates on our Twitter account.
The seniors aren’t the only show in town as there are numerous other games involving our club and you can get the full details of these here.

Tipperary and Nenagh hurling legend Mick Burns visits MacDonagh Park, the 1995 senior team are getting back together while the club seeks an Irish Language and Culture Officer. All this and more in this week’s news on the Blues
Mick Burns

It was absolutely fantastic to see club legend Mick Burns in MacDonagh Park on Saturday afternoon last after a recent hospital stay. Mick is our most decorated hurler having been part of the legendary Tipperary teams of the 1950s and 1960s when he won five All-Ireland senior hurling titles, eight Munster senior titles, five National Hurling Leagues as well as a North Tipperary senior hurling crown with the club in 1964. Mick played for a number of years with Faughs in Dublin where he also won a county senior hurling league medal.

The Men of ’95
We have recently got word that the county senior championship-winning team of 1995 will be guests of the County Board at a reception prior to the county final this year and will be introduced to the crowd at half time. The game is fixed for 20 September but is subject to change due to Covid-19.
In 1995 Nenagh defeated Boherlahan Dualla 2-25 to 2-8, the goals came courtesy of John Heffernan and Robbie Tomlinson with captain Conor O’Donovan climbing the steps to claim the Dan Breen where he echoed the words of Paul Kennedy from 1992 when he declared that this is for everyone who ever wore the blue jersey.
Conor has once again taken on a leadership role with this team as he is coordinating the group for this reunion and all players from the panel are asked to contact him at 087 610 7360

Irish Language and Culture Officer
The club is currently looking for an Irish Language and Culture Officer. The main role of the Irish Language and Culture Officer is to promote the use of the Irish language and to promote cultural activities such as Irish music and dancing in the Club. The Culture & Language Officer position should be filled by someone who has a good working knowledge of the Irish language. The officer should provide a back-up service in the use of Gaeilge for all officers and members and encourage and promote the use of Irish phrases in the club’s business. Cultural activities should be organised through the very popular GAA Scór competition. He/she should also liaise closely with the County Irish Officer and any relevant Committee and with other Irish/cultural organisations in the area.
If you are interested in fulfilling this role, please contact eireognenagh@gmail.com or contact any committee member.
Thank You Christy

Christy refereeing a minor game on Sunday morning in MacDonagh Park
All of our teams in the club owe a huge debt of gratitude to referee Christy McLoughlin who has taken charge of all of our challenge games in recent weeks in MacDonagh Park. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we are unable to use a referee from outside the parish and the former goalkeeper has been more than accomodating to our teams when it comes to officiating matches. Without Christy being so willing to offer up his time, it is unlikely that these games would go ahead. So a big thank you Christy from everyone in the club.
Thank You Bartley and Marion

Our entire community owes a debt of gratitude to Bartley and Marion Ryan for their huge and selfless efforts in coordinating our club’s voluntary group who purchased groceries, fuel and prescriptions for the vulnerable during the pandemic. With over 70 volunteers, the response from our club to the call to help was phenomenal and Bartley and Marion deserve huge praise for everything they did over the last few months including the delivery of parish newsletters on Saturday evenings while the churches were closed. The voluntary group has now been stood down but if anyone still requires our assistance please do not hesitate to get in touch with the club and we will be thrilled to help.

“The sun come up, it was blue and gold” Tom Waits. Shane Hennessy last summer in goals during the John Tucker Cup
Goalkeeper training is now underway and any aspiring young goalie from the under-14 and under-16 groups should share their interest with a mentor. Thanks to Shane Hennessy for leading this initiative.
Membership
Membership is now due. Forms will be with mentors this week.

The search continues for a position that veteran Lenny Ryan can hurl in after trying out in goals in the first half and the full-back line in the second in a junior-B challenge game on Saturday last. Best of luck in the search Lenny from everyone in the club, we truly believe you’ll find a spot before your permanent retirement!
