Nenagh Éire Óg got the defence of their minor A hurling crown off to a winning start in Newport on Sunday evening when beating Newport Gaels by four points.

Newport Gaels (a combination of Newport and Ballinahinch) dominated the opening stages of this contest and led 0-4 to no-score after six minutes. Three James Mackey points (two frees) dragged Éire Óg back into contention (0-3 to 0-4) by the 11th minute.

The sides traded points thereafter with a fabulous James Mackey effort in the 24th minute leaving just one between the sides (0-7 to 0-8). A minute later Luke Kennedy struck for a superb left-handed goal following a clever pass from Gary Howard and Éire Óg led 1-7 to 0-8. Indeed, Éire Óg maintained that two-point advantage until the break: Nenagh Éire Óg 1-8 Newport Gaels 0-9.

Points from James Mackey (two frees) and Luke Kennedy helped Éire Óg into a 1-11 to 0-9 lead immediately after the interval. Newport Gaels stuck to their task however and thanks to a series of frees closed the gap to three points (1-15 to 0-15) with ten minutes to play. Éire Óg responded well to the challenge however and closed out the game in impressive fashion out-scoring their hosts 0-3 to 0-2 when it mattered most.

Éire Óg’s next outing is against Borris-Ileigh in MacDonagh Park, Nenagh on Wednesday, July 3rd (8pm). During the group stage of the championship the Blues will also face Roscrea, Kildangan, Kilruane MacDonagh’s and Toomevara.

A dominant Nenagh Éire Óg enjoyed a twelve-point win over a determined Mullinahone side at Boherlahan in the second round of the county senior hurling championship on Friday evening.

Éire Óg struggled to get into a decent rhythm in the opening half and led by just three points (0-10 to 0-7) at the break. Kevin Tucker (free), Tommy Heffernan (two), Donnacha Quinn, Brian Quinn, Seánie Geaney (two) and three superb efforts from Michael Heffernan accounted for the Éire Óg scores while Eoin Kelly notched two from play and five frees to keep Mullinahone in touch.

The Blues spurned a handful of notable goal chances in the opening half, but upped their performance considerably after the break. Indeed, Éire Óg held Mullinahone scoreless for twenty-two minutes of the second half and in the meantime raced into a 1-16 to 0-7 lead. The crucial goal arrived in the 48th minute when Tommy Heffernan won a ball at full-forward and beat Mullinahone ‘keeper Alan Walsh with a rasping shot. In all Mullinahone’s Alan Walsh made six saves.

Michael Heffernan set the tone in the second half when converting a sideline ball in the 37th minute. Seánie Geaney (two), James Mackey, Donnacha Quinn and Tommy Heffernan added the points before Mullinahone responded through an Eoin Kelly free in the 52nd minute. A Kevin Tucker free and Donnacha Quinn’s third point closed out the scoring from an Éire Óg point of view while Eoin Kelly (free) had the final say in the matter.

Éire Óg now progress to round three of the county senior hurling championship. The draw will be made on Monday night and could see the Blues facing one of the following round two winners: Borris-Ileigh, Moycarkey-Borris, Roscrea, Toomevara, Templederry Kenyons, Burgess or Cappawhite, Upperchurch-Drombane or Holycross-Ballycahill. It is understood that since Éire Óg have already played Toomevara that the sides will not be asked to play each other in the third round.

Éire Óg’s progression to the third round also ensures the Blues’ place in tier one of the re-structured county senior hurling championship which kicks into gear in 2014. Tier one will feature: Nenagh Éire Óg, Borris-Ileigh, Moycarkey-Borris, Roscrea, Toomevara, Templederry Kenyons, Burgess or Cappawhite, Upperchurch-Drombane or Holycross-Ballycahill, Killenaule, Carrick Swans, Drom & Inch, Loughmore-Castleiney, Éire Óg Annacarty, Clonoulty-Rossmore, Silvermines and Kildangan.

Meanwhile tier two will feature: Burgess or Cappawhite, Upperchurch-Drombane or Holycross-Ballycahill, Mullinahone, Carrick Davins, JK Bracken’s, Portroe, Knockavilla Kickhams, Kilruane MacDonagh’s, Ballingarry, Borrisokane, Golden-Kilfeacle, Lorrha, Moneygall, Thurles Sarsfields, Boherlahan-Dualla and Cashel King Cormacs.

One of the following sides will be relegated this year and be replaced by the 2013 county intermediate hurling champions: Boherlahan-Dualla, Golden-Kilfeacle, Moneygall, Cashel King Cormacs or Carrick Davins.

The draw for the second round of the 2013 county senior hurling championship took place on Sunday evening and pits Nenagh Éire Óg against south Tipperary’s Mullinahone. Fixture details TBC.

Éire Óg recorded a stirring win over Thurles Sarsfields – the defending county and provincial champions – at a soaking wet The Ragg in the opening round of the county senior hurling championship this evening. Indeed, a hard-working Éire Óg were superb value for this three-point win.

The game began at a frantic pace with Thurles’ Lar Corbett and Éire Óg’s Billy Heffernan shown straight red cards as early as the fourth minute. Thurles took the lead thanks to a Pa Bourke free, but Éire Óg hit back with two Tommy Heffernan points to lead 0-2 to 0-1 after eleven minutes.

Two Pa Bourke efforts (one free) and a Seánie Geaney point saw the sides locked at 0-3 apiece by the 18th minute. Stephen Cahill then gave Thurles the lead, but Éire Óg responded with a Kevin Tucker ’65 before Killian Gleeson handed the Blues a 0-5 to 0-4 advantage in the 23rd minute.

A Kevin Tucker ’65 added to the Éire Óg tally, but to their credit Thurles Sarsfields finished out the half strongly with points from Stephen Cahill and Pa Bourke retiring the sides at six points apiece.

Having played with the wind in the opening half Éire Óg were a little disappointed not to enjoy an interval lead. Three times Éire Óg had created goal-scoring opportunities, but Thurles ‘keeper Paddy McCormack denied Paddy Murphy (twice) and Seánie Geaney with a series of superb saves.

Éire Óg began the second half in positive fashion with points from Kevin Tucker (one free, one point) and Paddy Murphy helping the Blues into a 0-9 to 0-6 lead by the 34th minute.

Michael O’Brien and Paddy Murphy then traded points before a Pa Bourke brace (one free) left one between them – 0-10 to 0-9.

A Kevin Tucker free in the 43rd minute settled Éire Óg, but Thurles responded with a Pa Bourke free to leave one between them with twelve minutes to play.

Éire Óg then upped their performance level considerably with points from Kevin Tucker (two frees) and Tommy Heffernan (two) forcing the Blues five points clear (0-15 to 0-10) in a stunning six-minute spell. Thurles did manage two late points, but the Éire Óg defence was in no mood to concede a goal which could have rescued the game from a Sarsfields point of view.

Despite trailing 0-2 to 1-6 after nine minutes Éire Óg recovered to register a fine four-point junior A league semi-final win over Burgess at a sunny Cloughjordan this evening.

Éire Óg started very poorly with Burgess taking full advantage. Burgess led 0-5 to 0-2 after seven minutes when a long-range free found the Éire Óg net. Burgess added to their tally a minute later and Éire Óg looked in real trouble – 0-2 to 1-6.

Éire Óg responded to the challenge with points from Donnacha Quinn, David Hackett (two frees), Darragh Walsh and Brian Maxwell reducing the deficit to three points by the 20th minute. Burgess hit back with a point of their own, but Éire Óg were hurling much the better now and deservedly hit the net in the 22nd minute when Gary Howard grabbed Davy Hackett’s delivery and beat the Burgess ‘keeper with a rasper – 1-7 apiece.

The sides traded points prior to half-time and retired all square – Éire Óg 1-9 Burgess 1-9.

It was tit-for-tat in the opening minutes of the second half and even though Éire Óg now looked the better side they struggled to shake off the challenge of a dogged Burgess outfit.

In the 44th minute a Niall Madden free from long-range handed Éire Óg a 1-13 to 1-12 lead, but the Blues then fired five consecutive wides. In the meantime Burgess stole in for two points which helped them into a 1-14 to 1-13 lead by the 50th minute.

Two minutes later a David Hackett free levelled it while a Paul Ryan point with five minutes to play handed Éire Óg the lead. To their credit Burgess responded with a point (1-15 apiece), but Éire Óg would not be denied and surged toward the final whistle with points from Alan Kelly, Andrew Coffey, Brian Maxwell and David Hackett (free) sealing this win in emphatic terms.

Éire Óg will face Borris-Ileigh in the final – Borris-Ileigh saw off Toomevara in their respective semi-final this evening.

The North Tipperary junior B league campaign ended in disappointing defeat for Nenagh Éire Óg, but the lads are now looking forward to the north Tipperary junior B hurling championship.

Éire Óg’s north Tipperary junior B hurling league campaign came to a disappointing end in Borrisokane on Thursday evening when the home side won with five goals to spare.

Borrisokane, who needed a win to force their way into the semi-finals, started well and led 1-2 to no-score before Éire Óg got off the mark thanks to a Kieran Duffy free in the 13th minute. A second Borrisokane goal in the 23rd minute helped the home side into a 2-6 to 0-5 interval lead.

Borrisokane began the second half in positive fashion and hit Éire Óg with a third goal before Aidan Healy managed the first of his four second half points. Éire Óg scored a goal of their own when Kieran Duffy buried a free from 23 yards in the 50th minute. Unfortunately Borrisokane added two further goals to their tally.

In the up-coming junior B hurling championship Éire Óg have been drawn in a group featuring Newport, Ballinahinch, Ballina and Portroe with the top two qualifying for the semi-finals.

Nenagh Éire Óg 2-22 Kilruane MacDonagh’s 2-17

Nenagh Éire Óg enjoyed a five-point win over Kilruane MacDonagh’s at a sunny Cloughjordan on Sunday afternoon – Éire Óg will now face Burgess in the Dr Fogarty Cup final at a time, date and venue to be confirmed.

Éire Óg started well and led 0-4 to 0-1 after eight minutes with Tommy Heffernan (two), Donnacha Quinn (free) and Paddy Murphy responsible for these early efforts.

Mark O’Leary and Kieran Cahill responded for Kilruane and when Niall O’Meara cracked over a superb point in the 12th minute there was just the minimum between them – 0-5 to 0-4.

Éire Óg responded to the challenge with a third Tommy Heffernan point and a terrific Paddy Murphy goal – Murphy played a slick one-two with Killian Gleeson before finishing off his left in the 15th minute (1-6 to 0-4).

Killian Gleeson then added to the Éire Óg tally before Thomas Cleary plundered a great goal for Kilruane in the 18th minute.

It was tit-for-tat thereafter until a Donnacha Quinn free in the 25th minute helped Éire Óg into a 1-10 to 1-7 lead. Just then, however, Kilruane sparked into life with three consecutive points (Mark O’Leary and a Michael Costello brace) levelling matters.

All of Kilruane’s good work was undone however in the 28th minute when Paddy Murphy buried a second goal. James Mackey then added an Éire Óg point and Nenagh led 2-11 to 1-10 at the break.

Mark O’Leary opened the scoring for Kilruane in the second half, but Éire Óg responded with points from Killian Gleeson (two) and Barry Heffernan (two frees) to take a 2-15 to 1-11 lead.

To their credit Kilruane fought back with a second Thomas Cleary goal. The MacDonagh’s added two further points and with 19 minutes to play there was just two between them (2-15 to 2-13).

A tough battled ensued. Indeed, with eight minutes to play Kilruane were still within striking distance (2-16 to 2-18). Éire Óg, however, finished strongly with a late surge of points from Tommy Heffernan, Michael Heffernan, Andrew Coffey and Killian Gleeson ensuring that the Blues progressed.

Following a disappointing defeat suffered at the hands of Knockshegowna in the last round Éire Óg returned to winning ways on Saturday evening in Roscrea when the Blues enjoyed a fifteen-point win over the home side.

Éire Óg played with the wind in the opening half and led 0-4 to 0-2 thanks to four Davy Hackett efforts before Bob O’Brien won a Pearse Morris delivery in the 19th minute and beat the Roscrea ‘keeper with a classy finish.

The Blues added points thanks to the efforts of Gary Howard and Darragh Walsh before Bob O’Brien hit the post with a rasping effort.

Roscrea fought back and trailed 0-8 to 1-7, but Éire Óg closed out the half impressively with points from Brian Maxwell, Bob O’Brien and Brian Quinn to lead 1-10 to 0-8 at the interval.

Éire Óg had registered ten first half wides, but the lads’ performance improved significantly in the second half with efforts from David Hackett, Brian Maxwell, Donnacha Quinn (two) and Brian Quinn firing the Blues into a 1-15 to 0-8 lead.

Roscrea responded with two points of their own, but Éire Óg were moving well with David Hackett (two frees), Darragh Walsh and Bob O’Brien (two) adding to the Blues’ tally – 1-20 to 0-10.

Roscrea rallied with five late points to cut the deficit significantly, but Éire Óg proved too strong for their hosts on this occasion with efforts from James Mackey (two), Brian Maxwell, Alan Kelly, Bob O’Brien and a Philip Hickey goal in the 58th minute propelling the Blues into the knock-out stages of this year’s junior A hurling league.

Éire Óg suffered an eight-point defeat to Toomevara at Dolla in a one-sided Hibernian Inn north Tipperary senior hurling championship quarter-final.

Éire Óg suffered an eight-point defeat to Toomevara at Dolla in a one-sided Hibernian Inn north Tipperary senior hurling championship quarter-final.

Prior to this afternoon Éire Óg were undefeated, but Toomevara proved too strong on this occasion for the Blues.

Toome started well and led 1-2 to no-score before Éire Óg got off the mark thanks to a long-range Barry Heffernan free. A Kevin Tucker free and then a super Michael Heffernan point dragged Éire Óg to within two points of Toome.

Éire Óg then took the lead thanks to a Killian Gleeson goal – Gleeson did especially well to dispossess his marker before belting home a great shot – 1-3 to 1-2.

Following a Kevin Tucker point in the 25th minute Éire Óg led 1-6 to 1-5, but Toomevara closed out the opening half brilliantly and led 1-9 to 1-7 at the break.

Toomevara had played into the breeze in the opening half and immediately after the break Toome hit 1-3 without reply to lead 2-12 to 1-7 before Éire Óg managed a response through Michael Heffernan in the 37th minute.

To their credit the Éire Óg lads battled right to the very end.

Although Éire Óg’s interest in this year’s divisional senior championship has come to an end the Blues now look forward to the first round of the county championship – how Éire Óg progress in the county series will have implications for 2014 so it is vitally important that the efforts of the lads are supported.

The sixteen club teams who fail to make their divisional semi-finals will feature in the first round of the county hurling championship. The eight losers of this first round will enter the Ó Riain Cup (which has relegation attached) while the eight winners from round one of the county championship play-off with the eight losing divisional semi-finalists. Critically, the winners of this round will be guaranteed a place in the top-tier of the 2014 county senior hurling championship. Those eight winners will join the eight divisional finalists to make up the top-sixteen who will play out for the Dan Breen in 2014.

Despite a late surge Éire Óg came up just short against Newport in a hard-fought junior B hurling league clash at MacDonagh Park, Nenagh on Monday evening.

Kieran Duffy opened the scoring for Éire Óg and although Newport struck back with two points a Gary Howard effort levelled it up in the 11th minute. The opening half featured four more Newport points, but Éire Óg responded with fine points from Ger O’Gorman, Kieran Duffy (free) and Gary Howard. Half-time: Nenagh Éire Óg 0-5 Newport 0-6.

Newport started the second half in very positive fashion. The sides traded points initially before Newport hit four points without reply to lead 0-11 to 0-6 by the 50th minute.

Éire Óg were far from finished however. In the 53rd minute Gary Howard cracked home a 21-yard free. The Blues followed up Howard’s goal with two wides and piled on the pressure in the closing minutes. A Jack Sheedy point on the hour mark left just one between them. Éire Óg then fired yet another wide before an Aodhán Geaney ’65 dropped agonisingly short and was cleared away.

Éire Óg’s final game in the group phase of the junior B hurling league is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 2nd in Borrisokane against Borrisokane at 12 noon.

In the up-coming junior B hurling championship Éire Óg have been drawn in a group featuring Newport, Ballinahinch, Ballina and Portroe with the top two qualifying for the semi-finals of the competition.
