Nenagh Éire Óg 5-12 Portroe 0-2

It was the clash of the 2013 and 2014 county junior B champions as Nenagh faced Portroe in the opening round of the junior A league.

Nenagh started brightly when Holly O’Brien pointed a free in the second minute following a push on Aislinn O’Brien. Nenagh continued in determined fashion when Sarah O’Connor blasted home a fine goal after great work by Julie Moylan and Aislinn O’Brien. Portroe responded and forced Nenagh goalkeeper Sarah Quigley into making a fine save and they pointed the resultant ’45.

The impressive Alicia Hallinan, who had a great first half causing the opposition all sorts of trouble on the right wing, pointed in the eight minute. Portroe scored a point of their own, their last for the evening – however this does not reflect the determined manner in which they hurled over the hour and they truly deserved more than they got.

Shortly after Sarah O’Connor bagged her second goal of the night when pouncing on a rebound after a fine save by the Portroe netminder. Nenagh were on fire at this stage and Holly O’Brien blasted another goal which was shortly followed up by another three-pointer by Julie Moylan. Aislinn O’Brien finshed the scoring with a point of her own almost on the half-time whistle to leave the score reading 4-3 to 0-2 at the break.

Any hopes of a Portroe fight back were quickly dashed when Michelle Collins and substitute Grace O’Brien both split the posts before Grace finished another goal after great work by Alanna Morris.

Éire Óg rattled off seven more points throughout the second half from Hazel Coffey, Aileen Duggan, Aislinn O’Brien, Alanna Morris and Grace O’Brien (2) to leave the final score Nenagh Éire Óg 5-12 Portroe 0-2.

The foundations for this win came from an impressive half-back line of Aileen Duggan, Zoey Gratton and Alanna Morris who cleaned up most of what came their way with ease. Captain Ciara McGrath and Michelle Collins dominated midfield while Sarah O’Connor, Alicia Hallinan and Aislinn O’Brien were the best of the forwards.

Nenagh Éire Óg: Sarah Quigley, Kara Ryan-Mulqueen, Rachel Maher, Saoirse Gleeson, Aileen Duggan, Zoey Gratton, Alanna Morris, Michelle Collins, Ciara McGrath (captain), Julie Moylan, Aislinn O’Brien, Alicia Hallinan, Holly O’Brien, Sarah O’Connor, Hazel Coffey. Subs: Grace O’Brien for Moylan, Maeve Coffey for Collins, Elaine Slattery for Hallinan, Emer Ryan for Ryan Mulqueen, Emer Dight for Coffey.
