To see a selection of photographs from this evening\u2019s book launch please click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/nenagheireog\/photos_stream\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the launch Nenagh \u00c9ire \u00d3g club chairman Jim Nagle warmly welcomed the large crowd, GAA President Liam O\u2019Neill and also took time to acknowledge the presence of representatives of the North Board, County Board and neighbouring clubs in the MacDonagh Park Complex.<\/p>\n<p>Authors D\u00f3nal and Nancy Murphy regaled the audience with a presentations of highlights from this definitive social history of Gaelic sport in Nenagh while the evening\u2019s entertainment also featured the singing of Gerry O\u2019Brien and Jenny Bracken\u2019s reading of the Thomas MacDonagh poem \u2018John, John\u2019 &#8211; Jenny Bracken is a great granddaughter of Con Cleary who was a significant influence on the development of the Nenagh \u00c9ire \u00d3g club.<\/p>\n<p>In a well-received address club Jim Nagle outlined the scale of the project undertaken by D\u00f3nal A Murphy, PJ Maxwell and Nancy Murphy. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf something is worth doing in life it is worth doing right,\u201d Jim Nagle said before revealing that the book \u2018A Central Culture &#8211; Gaelic Sport in Nenagh\u2019 represented much more than a \u201cmere club history\u201d. Instead, the book examines the social and cultural fabric of Gaelic games over a 130-year period in the town.<\/p>\n<p>Jim Nagle thanked the LEADER project for their help and support, financial or otherwise, and particularly Se\u00e1n Crowley who made a significant contribution to \u2018A Central Culture &#8211; Gaelic Sport in Nenagh\u2019. Mr Nagle also thanked the printers, the Nenagh Guardian, for all of their assistance before describing the book as a \u201cremarkable publication\u201d which blends history and memoir.<\/p>\n<p>Nancy Murphy made a presentation of the book to Liam O\u2019Neill before the GAA President described \u2018A Central Culture &#8211; Gaelic Sport in Nenagh\u2019 as \u201cworthy of great praise\u201d. Mr O\u2019Neill also asked those present to \u201cnever forget what makes us strong, what makes us strong is community\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can look back with pride and honour at our achievements over the past one hundred and thirty years and we can look forward to the next one hundred and thirty years,\u201d Liam O\u2019Neill said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am delighted to be here and I hope this history inspires the coming generations to take the Nenagh club to even greater heights,\u201d Liam O\u2019Neill added.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion club chairman Jim Nagle thanked the GAA president for his kind remarks, described the book as a \u201ccollector\u2019s item\u201d and dedicated it to every player, mentor, administrator and supporter of Nenagh \u00c9ire \u00d3g. <\/p>\n<p>Mr Nagle thanked D\u00f3nal A Murphy, PJ Maxwell and Nancy Murphy for their work on this ambitious project before asking Ger Gavin to make a presentation to Liam O\u2019Neill on behalf of the club &#8211; Ger Gavin, as club chairman in 2006, instigated this project which has now come to fruition.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"851\" height=\"570\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nenagheireog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Book-Cover-Volume-11.jpg\" alt=\"Book Cover Volume 1\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2913\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nenagheireog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Book-Cover-Volume-11.jpg 851w, https:\/\/www.nenagheireog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Book-Cover-Volume-11-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 851px) 100vw, 851px\" \/><center><em>The cover of volume one of \u2018A Central Culture &#8211; Gaelic Sport in Nenagh\u2019.<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p><strong>BOOK DETAILS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In all \u2018A Central Culture &#8211; Gaelic Sport in Nenagh\u2019 will comprise three volumes &#8211; volume one covers the years 1884-1933, volume two 1934-1959 and volume three 1960-2014. GAA President Liam O\u2019Neill launched the first two volumes of the book on Sunday while the third volume will be published in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Volumes one and two cover the first seventy-five years (1884 to 1959). Researched and written by D\u00f3nal A Murphy, PJ Maxwell and Nancy Murphy, with Gaelic sport as the focus and Nenagh town and parish at centre stage, this story explores many aspects of social history. People and place, sport and identity are at the heart of a publication which contains much to fascinate and intrigue a wide audience.<\/p>\n<p>This publication will surely find a resting place in every home in Nenagh and the surrounding area. It will cater for all Tipperary GAA fans and will also appeal to national sporting enthusiasts and members of local historical societies and family historians.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the physical book a huge amount of digital content associated with the project will be published via the club website in 2015. That digital content will include: photographs, a detailed listing of every player on every team at every level in every code to have played for Nenagh \u00c9ire \u00d3g from 1960 onwards, a listing of every match played during that period and a copy of every reference to Nenagh \u00c9ire \u00d3g contained in the Nenagh Guardian files.<\/p>\n<p>Volume one of this fantastic and comprehensive study of all branches of Gaelic activity in Nenagh will reveal some notable facts:-<\/p>\n<p>1) that there were thirteen founders of the national GAA on November 1st 1884 (not just seven, as hitherto officially believed)<\/p>\n<p>2) that Nenagh formed the first official hurling club in the country, only four weeks and one day later, initially a branch of the cricket club<\/p>\n<p>3) that Nenagh was first to organise a team bearing the name \u2018Tipperary\u2019, not alone in the GAA but in any sport; and among the first to run annual Sports meets under GAA rules.<\/p>\n<p>The book will also include a ground-breaking analysis of the strength of cricket among the ethnic Irish and Irish-Norman of Ormond, prior to 1884 and during the 1890s.<\/p>\n<p>The personalities of most of the Nenagh club\u2019s founders are rounded out in the book \u2013 descendants of four appear in the story and are traced through three to six generations down to the present one.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"867\" height=\"572\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nenagheireog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Book-Cover-Volume-2.jpg\" alt=\"Book Cover Volume 2\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2912\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nenagheireog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Book-Cover-Volume-2.jpg 867w, https:\/\/www.nenagheireog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Book-Cover-Volume-2-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 867px) 100vw, 867px\" \/><center><em>The cover of volume two of \u2018A Central Culture \u2013 Gaelic Sport in Nenagh\u2019.<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Volume two features a unique oral history of Gaelic sports in Nenagh as told by several veterans, some deceased since the interviews; surprising stories in appendices; Nenagh\u2019s opponents in finals and the profusion of personality profiles.<\/p>\n<p>A particular strength of the story is the collection of oral history which illustrate in rich colloquial language the dreams and downfalls, heroics and errant ways, evolving club ethos and, again, the social context of the sport.<\/p>\n<p>Appendices include revealing profiles of the thirteen founders of the national GAA, and the first full transcript of the report of the 1884 foundation; a fresh look at Nenagh\u2019s first opponents, Silvermines and their Silver Cup; and details of a testimonial, dominated by the traders and professionals of the market town Aonach Urmhumhan, to Con Brewer of the \u2018De Wet\u2019 neighbours.<\/p>\n<p>This unique history also features scores of pen pictures of players and officials \u2013 from Minogue \u2018diddles his man, bustled Mackey\u2019; Darcy \u2018the star performer, once more the shining light, a Finn Mccool\u2019; through the North Board leaders, McGrath, Moylan, Hogan, \u00d3 Cl\u00e9irigh; to Bergin \u2018his reach, speed and telling shots with either hand, the power of a battering-ram\u2019; 1928, 1949 and 1957 teams in full.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"971\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nenagheireog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Authors-1024x971.jpg\" alt=\"Authors\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2937\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nenagheireog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Authors-1024x971.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.nenagheireog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Authors-300x284.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nenagheireog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/Authors.jpg 1271w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><center><em>The authors of \u2018A Central Culture &#8211; Gaelic Sport in Nenagh\u2019 &#8211; from left: D\u00f3nal A Murphy, PJ Maxwell and Nancy Murphy.<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p><strong>FOR SALE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first two volumes of \u2018A Central Culture &#8211; Gaelic Sport in Nenagh\u2019 are now on sale at just \u20ac40.
