ELLA CAREY: AWARD WINNER, JOURNALIST, SOURCE AND SUBJECT

""

After winning the award, Ella posed for the paparazzi in a local Michelin Star Restaurant.

The announcer had barely finished revealing the names Micheál, Shane and Ella as winners of the IMRO General Music Programme Award 2026 when Ella Carey rushed the stage like a tornado, scattering her fellow winners to the side like a bowling ball through skittles, grabbed the microphone, declaring that she “totally deserved the award”, without even briefly hinting that she had to share it with her two colleagues.

In the confusion that followed, Ella, a lady who gives herself a massive welcome where ever she goes, launched into an emotional acceptance speech thanking herself for her years of inspiration, dedication and outstanding contribution to the music industry.

After twenty minutes hogging the limelight on stage, Ella then proceeded to the waiting paparazzi and dazzled them for twenty-five minutes, striking various poses with the trophy draped in one hand while the other caressed a large glass of Savvy B, before presenting herself in front of journalists, asking herself various questions and delivering the answers in front of the bemused hacks.

When asked by herself how it felt to win the prestigious award, Ella became visibly emotional before thanking herself for “always believing in Ella, even during the difficult times”. She declared that she was “absolutely thrilled” and that she had always known Ella had what it takes to reach the very top, before once again emotionally thanking herself for all that she has done.

The achievement will come as little surprise to followers of Nenagh Éire Óg, where Ella has already declared herself the greatest PRO in the history of the club, according to a source very close to Ella. Another source says she is now considering whether the IMRO award should be renamed in her honour, much as the Nenagh Éire Óg PRO role has effectively become the Ella Carey Media Empire.

“Fame will not go to my head,” Ella declared, before announcing that she will now only consider inter-county hurlers for dates and that senior club players need only swipe left. Her Tinder profile was immediately updated with photographs of herself alone with the trophy and a new byline: “The Liam McCarthy will look stunning beside that.”

Eleven Goals Tell Only Half the Story as Non-Bibs Prevail

""

There are evenings when hurling is played for points, evenings when it is played for glory and then there are evenings when four men take to an Astro pitch with hurleys in hand and discover that, for reasons known only to themselves, missing an open goal is almost as important as scoring one. Last Wednesday evening was very much in the latter category as Jamie Kennedy and Ger Ryan, resplendent in bibs, took on the youthful enthusiasm of Conor O’Donovan and the accumulated wisdom of Martin Gleeson in a lively 2 v 2 Social ‘ground’ Hurling encounter.

There was no messing about beforehand. A ten-minute warm-up of end-to-end alternate ball striking ensured that the limbs were loosened, the reflexes sharpened and nobody could later claim that the absence of a warm-up was responsible for any of the more spectacular misses that were to follow.

Then came the serious business. Three periods of ten minutes each, ground hurling, goals at either end and enough goal chances to have filled a much larger scoreboard. The bibs made the brighter start, Ger Ryan converting an early penalty with the sort of satisfaction normally reserved for a last-minute All-Ireland winner. Conor, between the sticks, could only watch as the ball disappeared beyond him.

But Martin Gleeson was not there merely to admire Ger’s finishing. He soon began to impose himself on proceedings and, when the first ten minutes came to an end, the non-bibs had established a 3-2 lead. Martin had found the net twice, Conor once and Jamie had replied with two of the bibs’ scores. It was already becoming apparent that the contest would be decided not so much by who could score as by who could refrain from missing.

The second ten minutes belonged decisively to the non-bibs. Martin continued his personal disagreement with the laws of probability by adding three more goals, while Conor contributed another two. Jamie, refusing to allow the scoreboard to become entirely one-sided, supplied the sole response from the bibs. At the interval the non-bibs had stretched their advantage to five and the bibs were beginning to look like men who had left their best ammunition in the warm-up.

Yet there was no question of surrender. The final ten minutes produced six goals, three apiece, as both teams finally discovered the strange and wonderful art of putting the ball into the net with something approaching regularity. When the final whistle eventually sounded, the scoreboard read 11-6 to the non-bibs, a scoreline which suggested superiority but perhaps did not fully convey the number of opportunities that had gone begging along the way.

Martin Gleeson emerged as top scorer on the night with a handsome six-goal haul. He was also involved in a spirited contest with Jamie for the less prestigious award of most goal chances missed. There are no official statistics for this category, thankfully, but both men would have had a reasonable claim to the trophy.

For the bibs, Jamie Kennedy and Ger Ryan finished as joint top scorers with three goals apiece. Ger will probably remember his early penalty with particular affection, although Jamie may prefer to remember the three occasions when he found the net rather than the numerous occasions when the ball apparently developed a mind of its own in front of goal.

The Goal of the Game gong, however, goes to Conor O’Donovan for a penalty of considerable precision. He placed the ball beautifully into the top right-hand corner of the net, giving Jamie in goals absolutely no chance. It was the kind of finish that briefly suggested that somewhere beneath the social hurling exterior there might be a serious hurler struggling to get out.

In the end, the result mattered less than the workout, the craic and the competitive spirit that makes these Social Hurling evenings such good value. Eleven goals for the non-bibs, six for the bibs and enough missed chances between them to keep the statisticians busy for several weeks.

Well done to Jamie, Ger, Conor and Martin on an excellent workout. The hurleys can be dusted down once again as Social Hurling returns next Wednesday evening at 8.15pm, when there will presumably be more goals, more misses and, with any luck, somebody prepared to take responsibility for counting them.
