There were no boxing gloves but there were two hurleys. There was no world heavyweight title at stake but there was something almost as valuable: bragging rights.

The opening five minutes were all about feeling each other out. Like Ali and Frazier circling in Madison Square Garden, O’Donovan and Phelan traded blows from opposite ends of the Astro, randomly striking the sliotar to each other as they warmed up and prepared for the punishment that was to come.

Then the gloves came off.

For five minutes the pair went end-to-end in a ferocious 1 v 1 ball-striking contest, doubling on the sliotar on the rebound. It was Ali v Frazier in miniature. Every strike demanded an answer. Every rebound was another challenge. Neither man was prepared to give an inch.

Then came the ten-minute endurance test. Each player had to bring the sliotar under control with one touch of the hurley before firing it back towards his opponent. Touch, strike, thunder. Touch, strike, thunder. The ball was travelling faster than a Foreman right hand and the reactions required would have made even Muhammad Ali raise an eyebrow.

And then the sidewall entered the contest.

With both players positioned close to the wall, the sliotar began ricocheting around the Astro with all the unpredictability of a Sonny Liston punch. A ball would glance off the wall, change direction and come screaming back. It was no longer simply about striking the ball. It was about reading the bounce, anticipating the angle and reacting before the opposition could.

There were moments when one wondered if we were witnessing hurling or Ali’s famous rope-a-dope strategy. One player would absorb the pressure, wait for the rebound and then unleash the counter-attack. The sliotar was doing the dancing while the two combatants tried desperately to keep up.

Next came five minutes of ball-wall action. Alternating strikes against the wall, the pair hammered the sliotar back and forth. Crack. Rebound. Crack. Rebound. The hurleys were beginning to sound like a pair of heavyweights trading punches under the bright lights of Las Vegas.

But just when everyone thought the battle was over, there was one final twist.

The penalty shootout.

Three rounds. Five penalties each. Fifteen moments of opportunity. Fifteen chances to become the Ali of the Astro.

The tension was enormous. One could almost hear Ali shouting “What’s my name?” as each penalty taker approached the ball. But unlike Ali v Foreman in Kinshasa, there was to be no knockout blow.

When the final penalty had been struck, the scores were locked together at 6-6.

A draw.

No knockout. No champion emerging from the smoke.

Like Ali and Frazier after their epic battles, both men had been tested to the limit.
