The Nenagh \u00c9ire \u00d3g Healthy Club Project team hosted a very successful \u2018Well Being and Mental Health\u2019 seminar at the Abbey Court Hotel on Friday, January 24th.

The event represented an opportunity for club members and the wider community to become informed on the many issues surrounding depression and mental health. Indeed, the event attracted over 150 members of the public to the Abbey Court Hotel for a warmly-received seminar.<\/p>\n

Speakers on the night included Cloyne\u2019s Conor Cusack and S\u00e9amus Hennessy (Kilruane MacDonagh\u2019s). In addition a number of organisations were present with information pertaining to the critical area of mental health.<\/p>\n

Master of ceremonies for the night was juvenile club chairman Michael Geaney who is the team leader for the Nenagh \u00c9ire \u00d3g Healthy Club Project. Michael is joined on the Healthy Club Project team by Nuala Connolly (team admin), Tom Moylan (children\u2019s officer) and community representatives Clare Slattery and Greg Browne. Aside from a speech made by Michael Geaney, Clare Slattery, Greg Browne and Tom Moylan also spoke.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile the event featured keynote speeches from Conor Cusack and S\u00e9amus Hennessy.<\/p>\n

Conor Cusack, who featured for Cork in 2006 All-Ireland final, spoke passionately about his own mental health issues and stigma which often gets attached to people who suffer from mental illness. Conor revealed that for many years he had lived his life \u201ctrying to please others\u201d, suffered from panic attacks and lapsed into depression before finally emerging from his difficulties to live a life \u201ctrue to himself\u201d.<\/p>\n

In an emotional address Conor Cusack explained how he once was \u201cutterly convinced that my family and friends would be better off without me around\u201d, but that he now lived \u201clife not as a problem to be solved, but as a mystery to be lived\u201d.<\/p>\n

Conor Cusack highlighted the fact that individuals in Ireland were exposed to \u201cunhealthy levels of stress and anxiety\u201d and he appealed to people to seek help. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no shame, no weakness and no softness in admitting that you have a problem with your mental health,\u201d Conor Cusack explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are not alone; you don’t have to carry that burden on your own,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt takes a community to raise a child,\u201d Conor Cusack explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis problem won\u2019t be solved at a national level. Things can only change at a local level. I can\u2019t emphasise enough how important community is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay not to feel okay,\u201d the Cloyne man concluded.<\/p>\n

S\u00e9amus Hennessy, a highly decorated Kilruane MacDonagh\u2019s hurler, spoke passionately and highlighted the \u201cimpact one person can have on another person\u201d.<\/p>\n

S\u00e9amus Hennessy insisted that the most important aspect to the seminar was \u201cwhat happens next\u201d. <\/p>\n

S\u00e9amus asked everyone in attendance to work to help other people.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about people, community and taking action,\u201d S\u00e9amus Hennessy said.<\/p>\n

In one anecdote S\u00e9amus revealed that he had recently encountered Fionnbar Walsh, the father of Kerry teenager D\u00f3nal Walsh – although D\u00f3nal Walsh died from cancer he had campaigned prior to his death in the area of mental health.<\/p>\n

\u201cD\u00f3nal Walsh\u2019s father told me that if you can\u2019t have an impact among your own then what can you do,\u201d S\u00e9amus Hennessy said as he emphasised a key theme: community.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy fundamental idea is that people help people. It\u2019s about having an impact on one person in your community if you can,\u201d S\u00e9amus Hennessy, who sadly lost his own mother to suicide, explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat sort of community exists if we don\u2019t care for one another,\u201d S\u00e9amus said.<\/p>\n

S\u00e9amus Hennessy paid tribute to Michael Geaney and Clare Slattery for the vision they showed to \u201ccreate a stronger community\u201d.<\/p>\n

Nenagh \u00c9ire \u00d3g club chairman Jim Nagle brought proceedings to close when he encouraged everyone present to \u201creach out to one person and spread the message\u201d.<\/p>\n
