Over 40 or thereabouts ?

Why let your hurling days come to an abrubt end, lose contact with the club and with team mates from previous years. Are you in the over forty category (or thereabouts) and still interested in playing hurling or being involved to some extent. The club is initiating an over 40's 5 a-side competition to cater for you. It is envisaged that the games will be of low intensity, with minimal physicality and be played in a spirit of fun and enjoyment. It might be described as a 'Social' hurling competition with a hint of competitiveness thrown in. If you have lost contact, why not take this opportunity to re-acquaint yourself with the Nenagh Eire Og GAA Club. Contact Conor O Donovan (087-2271952) for further information

Scor

For the first time in well over a decade, the Nenagh Eire Og club participated in Scor, taking part in this years Scor na bPaisti. Thanks to the trojan efforts of Mairead Long and Margaret Hennessy, participants from the club are now taking to the stage again for singing, set dancing, figure dancing, recitations, ballad groups, novelty acts and musical competitions. We had participants in five of the eight disciplines and were successful in Instrumental music (Roisin Starr, Shane Hennessy, Elana Morris) and in the Quiz (Andrew Coffey, Philip Hickey, Shane Hennessy). These now go on to represent the club in the North Final which takes place at 7:00pm on Friday 27th March in the Community hall Portroe. Other participants on the night included Solo song (Maura Long) Ballad group (Anna Dillon, Sinead Long, Maura Long) and Figure dancing (Niamh Sheridan, Jeremy Kennedy, Maura Long, Sinead Long, Pat O Brien, Natasha O Brien) Well done to all It is hoped after this that Scor will now go from strength to strength within the club. If you are interested in getting involved in the future feel free to contact Mairead or Margaret.

The game was hard fought as we kept point for point with Templederry and went in at the break only two points in arrears 0.07 to 0.05, After the break we battled hard to keep in touch but temple Derry kept us at bay and we were beginning to struggle as we were unable to convert good ball reaching the forwards , D.Quinn was introduced and we rallied with two good points from him but Templederry got the all important goal to end our challenge. Paul Henry and his selectors Donnie O'Brien and Paul Kennedy would like to thank the Junior (b) Panel for the effort put in during the season .

Sympathy

The passing this week of Phil Hennessy cast a cloud over the club and brought overwhelming sadness to all who knew him, His easy going stroll on to the pitch masked a rare collection of talent and skill, he commanded his patch like so few could , whether it be for Nenagh or Tipperary . And when the match was over Phil would try to stroll unnoticed back to the sanctuary of the dressing room , never to be found seeking the adulation he so richly deserved. He was never one for the limelight when watching Eire Og play or train he stood apart for the throng never seeking to impose but yearning for a Nenagh win. In the latter years Phil was in the field more than often watching proudly from a distance as his grandson trained and played. Though small in stature Phil stood head and shoulders above the rest in an era of great players, it is a great pity his performances could not have captured on film!!. A soft spoken man you sometimes would have to strain the hear him ,but a great pleasure it was be to be in his company and chat to him ,bringing to mind the old cliché  “ one of natures true gentlemen “ even this isn’t adequate to describe the man,
A minutes silence to his honor was respectfully observed at our last committee meeting.
To his wife Bernie , son Philip , daughter in law Margaret grandchildren and extended family Nenagh Eire Og extends it’s heartfelt and sincere condolences .
Ar dheis de go raibh a anam dilis.

Nenagh Eire Og wish their sincerest condolences to the Nolan Family of the recent passing of Michael “spike” Nolan a huge loss to all,

Nenagh Eire Og wish their sincerest condolences to Jack White on the passing of his sister Joan,

Senior hurling

The Championship season came to a disappointing end in Toomevara Saturday evening against a dogged Roscrea side. After a difficult week Eire og went into this encounter with a sense of determination and pride in the club, but unfortunately we just did not get out of the blocks at all in the first half. With 9 minutes gone we were 1-1 down to no score and struggling to find our way. A goal chance was saved from Paul Ryan on 10 min and our first score did not register until a free converted by Kevin Tucker after 11minutes. Roscrea continued to pile on the pressure with a second goal from Tommy Fitzgerald on the 14minute mark, and another goal from Mark Ryan on 25 minutes made life very difficult for us. ,Kevin Tucker kept us in touch with three more points from frees points from Ritchie Flannery , Paul Ryan and Eddie Tucker took us in at half time 0-7 to 3-06 down.
Eire og returned after the break a different team and started to eat into Roscrea’s lead early on with a point from Michael Heffernan, further ,points from Kevin Tucker’s frees and Hugh Flannery, Paul Ryan from play kept the score board ticking in our favou. The game was being played at a fast and furious tempo with Eire Og piling on the pressure and Roscrea at this juncture had only registered 2 points in the second half. With 22min gone Eddie Tucker’s point brought us to within 3 points of Roscrea. An excellent save form a Michael Haffernan strike resulted in a 65 converted by Kevin Tucker to bring us to within 2 points , but a controversial goal from John Carroll right at the death sealed it for Roscrea .

Final score Eire Og 0-16 Roscrea 4-09 .
Team; Michael McNamara , Stephen Ryan , John Brennan , Alan Kelly , Hugh Flannery (0-1) , Richie Flannery (0-1) , Noel Moloney , John Flannery , Michael Hackett , Paul Ryan (0-2) , Eddie Tucker (0-2) , Paddy Murphy , Michael Heffernan (0-1) , Kevin Tucker (0-9) 8 from frees , David Hackett , Subs John Kennedy , Conor Kirwan ,Shane Maher .
